- It was called "The Gathering" and gather they did. More than 50,000 Scots and would-be Scots from across the globe gathered this past weekend in Scotland for the largest-ever reunion of the country's clansmen and their descendants. Janice McDonald was there and has this report for VOA.
I was there as a representative for my mother who was a Gunn..I got to meet this maori family at the gathering and made a life long friend from one of the Wilsons, which is a sept of clan Gunn, and we now refer to each other as 'Cuz'...I made many friends from around the world, from varying clans, who I count as dear friends and have managed to meet again a few times since...this was a great gathering...

The Clan Chisholm that fought the English at the Battles of Bannockburn, Neville's Cross & Culloden.
Aye Campbells will not be forgotten for their name has been despised in the Highlands for over 500 years.
Your a Douche bag. No doubt the campbells name won't be forgotten. Their name has more influence than most names worldwide. U.S. army base (fort cambell) , U.S.S. naval ships named after campbells , U.S. Campbell university , towns and counties with the campbell name throughout different states in the usa , campbell island pacific ocean , The argyll fashion pattern first used on campbell kilts , oh and did i forget campbells soup . Now that is what i call world wide influence and your right with that much influence they no doubt won't be forgotten . Despised by some clans in scotland but dominant in the world . Long live campbells served the greatest country in the world (USA) exponentially more influence historically than some douche bag clans that still hate them because of what happened to 38 mcdonalds back in wee scotland in 1692. How many campbells were slaughtered at inverary far more than that. Obviously the highland traditions of hospitality etc etc were on their way out by that time anyways, Clans traditions were ended less than 100 years later after culloden . Lots of folks agree that the campbells were really hated because they were more successful than other clans . I have seen numerous friendships between these two clans since what happened hundreds of years ago. It is people like you who stir up hate and give names a bad reputation. Campbells have dominated in america and across the globe since the days of them leaving scotland you think your stupid hate of them will stop the truth. Good luck with that.
Douche Bag.

My grandfather's ancestors were Brinson's, they immigrated to Virginia USA in mid 1600's, in papers written around 1700, he was referred to as, "The old Scot." Does anyone know what clan this family belonged too? I know they had very close ties to a family name of Cason.

Gordon Family
The Gordons are an ancient and distinguished family, originally from Normandy, where their ancestors are said to have had large possessions. From the great antiquity of the race, many fabulous accounts have been given of the descent of the Gordons. Some derive them from a city of Macedonia, called Gordonia, whence they went to Gaul; others find their origin in Spain, Flanders, &C. Some writers suppose Bertrand de Gourden who, in 1199, wounded Richard the Lion-heart mortally with an arrow before the castle of Chalus in the Limoges, to have been the great ancestor of the Gordons, but there does not seem to be any other foundation for such a conjecture than that there was a manor in Normandy called Gourden. It is probable that the first persons of the name in this island came over with William the Conqueror in 1066. According to Chalmers, the founder of this great family came from England in the reign of David the First (1124-53), and obtained from that prince the lands of Gordon (anciently Gordun, or Gordyn, from, as Chalmers supposes, the Gaelic Gordin, "on the hill"). He left two sons, Richard, and Adam, who, though the younger son, had a portion of the territory of Gordon, with the lands of Fanys on the southern side of it...

Clan MacKay, Manu Forti!
Me too! Manu Forti!
Clan Stewart. Virescit Vulnere Virtus!
I have a question. I’m McLennan and Campbell clans, how do I know which one I really actually am??
The clan took the name of the laird .the landowner his wife .his tenants his taxmen could have any name .Mac just means son or son of in Irish Gaelic .it's all Victorian romance there were no clan tartans .different areas had different colours and no pattern sticks survived .so no one knows the patterns .although the trocarian mummies in China were wearing checked cloth .
The kilt was invented in England in the 18th century .
Clan Campbell all the way !
I am descended partially from them after all.
Being born a Campbell, I agree....Clan Campbell All The Way!
HundleysOnABirdDiet fuck the Campbell’s
Campbell's were murdering, thieving bastards, especially against the MacGregor's. The Campbell's stole MacGregor land after the proscription of Clan Gregor in 1603, it wasn't until 1774 that the proscription against Clan Gregor was repealed and MacGregor's were given the same rights as any other Scottish people.
As a MacKenzie, fuck the Campbell's

The eagle feathers on the tam's. I want the facts on this. Were these eagle feathers only awarded to warriors who did something amazingly brave?
You're awarded them for completing feats of great strength, usually by performing some task while carrying very specific rocks that weigh no less than 200 lbs. For the heavier rocks, you earn the feathers simply by showing that you can pick up and put it on top of a waist-high fence. However, there are some rocks that are lighter than the rest but are so smooth that it's very difficult to keep ahold of them. To earn the corresponding feather for the smooth rocks, you have to hold them and walk a certain amount of paces without dropping them. There's a documentary called "Stoneland" that followed people trying to gain the right to wear the feathers.
The feathers are worn by the Clan Chiefs. ....or people that don’t know the significance and think it looks cool.
We have a bit of clan culture in ireland, but not really that prominent now since the clan system ended about 200 years before

My father was Scottish, surname Banks, don't think Banks' have a clan, but I can claim Mackay, Campbell, Bruce, Sinclair, Sutherland, Henderson, and others on my paternal side and Dunbar and Graham on my mother side as she was a Dunbar. Not sure the point of these clan gatherings though, what does everyone do there?. Perhaps someone can convince me otherwise. There appears to be more Americans, New Zealanders and Canadians than Scots, then they always have an over-the-top romantic view of all things Scots and probably watched Braveheart too many times!
