I'm an OTR truck driver, and I'm seeing more and more reckless individuals on the road driving semi trucks today, and instead of shutting them down like they should, the government is actually encouraging them to come out here in droves. I got the impression that he was not legally drunk. However, it was briefly mentioned that they found prescribed medication in his system. So, were they the type of meds that made him DUI, or was DUI ruled out? I wish this report cleared that up one way or the other!

Yep
@@user-gt8hc2bp4v Oh yes it does, I've watched it happen. Those trucks are like sails in the wind when the wind is high enough. But if that was the case he failed to slow down or pull over until the wind died down.
I agree it was not the wind but the wind effects trucks especially with box trailers way worse than bikes
*Riders take note:* it wasn’t the first two bikes that got hit, it was the second and third. The first bike - the one with the least amount of time to react - easily avoided the truck.
The second rider did not have sufficient collision avoidance skills. He reacted in time, but his reactions were completely ineffective. You can see the front of the bike wobble as he likely locked up the front brake, and you can see his right foot go down - and in the same amount of time that the lead rider was able to get well out of the path of the truck, the second rider didn’t even change his lane positioning, still being slightly to the right of centre of the lane when the truck hit him.
As for the third rider, they didn’t seem to react at all. Not paying attention? Or frozen in fear and unsure how to react? Impossible to say.
I’m not pointing these things out to be critical of those who were killed, I’m pointing them out in the hope that it might save a life.
If it’s been a long time since you’ve practised collision avoidance for your skills test, or if you don’t actually have your motorcycle license, find yourself an empty parking lot and practice the skills that can save your life. When you’re on the road, never let your guard down, never let yourself get distracted. Don’t ride if you are exhausted or impaired. Ride to live.
(if it isn’t clear to anyone that it was the third bike and not the first that got hit, take a careful look at the truck’s mirror - you can see the first bike stays well away from the side of the truck and the third bike goes into the side of the truck).
Every time I ride, I do a few counter steering crash avoidance drills. I will dodge shadows, tar snakes, rocks, anything on the road that I can use as reference for a hazard. Works really well and keeps my skills sharp.
So true. Just days ago I watched a helmet cam video on Yt with a very similar scenario. A rider was following a car. When that car slowed down and turned off, the rider was too close to it and it was too late for him to notice a vehicle pulling out of a sidestreet right in front of him.
Clearly, the vehicle's fault (at least most of it). But that is cold comfort for the biker who T-boned it
Maybe it takes guts to turn into the true oncoming traffic lane but this is so true it could have been avoided. Motorcycle safety training repeatedly teaches you to steer, not brake. You have to practice so you can execute instinctively. I practiced each year in a vacant parking lot. Albeit cruisers are harder to maneuver, I bet I could turn my Ninja faster than any sedan I've owned.
But I almost had a head on the last day of driver training at 15 and I remember freezing for a sec. I just couldn't process what was going on. What saved me was I saw it early and our closing speed was likely less than 40 mph. I even remembered to use my blinker and did a lane check before moving. Then the instructor saw it and swore and I'm glad the car didn't have dual controls as he stomped the floorboard hard.
Comments like this will draw negative attention from the lynch mobbers.
Michigan is 100% responsible for this. DOT regulations require CDL holders speak and read in English. The families need to sue.

I drive truck. Yeah the wind can push you into the oncoming lanes is you're not paying attention and counter steering right away. Driving a big truck in high winds is not fun. The next morning you do feel it in your arms. But he should of had control of that truck. The only way the wind will blow a truck across lanes like that is if he was empty. His license being downgraded means nothing. His license was valid the day of the crash so most of this clip means nothing. Impairment means different things to different people. Exactly. His license was valid at the time of the incident.
@@teaches2010 Doesn't exempt him of criminal charges!
Hallucinating from sleep deprivation while driving is so scary
Not hallucinating. Sleeping. This is not the type of deprived sleep scenario that would make one hallucinate. That takes much, much longer to induce and doesn't look like that. The guy was really, really, tired and he should have pulled over. It was still his fault. He should have made better decisions way before this happened. No truck load of 'stuff' is worth sleeping at the wheel. He was so very tired that he went over those rumble strips like he didn't notice them and had just enough consciousness to slightly move over to avoid the first car. And then he was gone.
They are going to have to look at his logbook, his hours of rest/work, quality of rest and where he rested (did he have a sleeper cab and decent chance at sleep?), and whether or not there were outside influences like a work culture that either normalized this kind of driving while tired or one that threatened his job if he didn't keep going. We just don't know yet why he was so tired. But he definitely fell asleep. Anyone who has been driving long enough and for long distances knows exactly what that looks like and feels like.

Sleepy joe b yours truly.
If it was the wind...why didn't he slow down and pull back over to the right? Total B.S.! He continued on the wrong side of the road for far too long with tragic consequences and should be found guilty and do his time.
The other vehicles travelling in the same direction didn`t have any problem staying in lane. Not even swaying, the lowlife is talking sheet.
Migrant, he was born in the congo. Not american.
What does that have to do with it? I mean, it looks like he fell asleep so are you saying Americans never fall asleep behind the wheel? He obviously had his license.
@@SparkyTuttleDEI hire duh
@@SparkyTuttleHi NOT SO BRIGHT, how did he manage to stay perfectly normal on a curved road ????
@@SparkyTuttle an American would have pulled over and stop driving
He is one of them.
You see semi drivers falling asleep all the time, on hwy 93 between Boulder City, NV and Kingman, AZ.... All the time... You see them going from one shoulder, all the way back to the shoulder on the other side of the road. You call 911 on the cell phone and they refuse to send someone out to intercept them. The dispatchers argue with you, it's unreal.
That's a fact. I used to run into Phoenix overnight for a year, and it seems there wasn't a week that I didn't pass a truck in the ditch between Quartzsite and PHX.
The oddest sight was when I was westbound and noticed a semi to my right, sitting upright in the dirt, a couple of yards past the wire fence along the freeway, pointing away from it at a ninety degree angle. Normally, the wrecks I encountered are either upright or laid over parallel to the direction of travel. Not this guy.
It took me a long time figuring out what might have happened. The best explanation I was able to come up with is like this. The driver most likely was travelling eastbound and dozed off. The out-of-control truck must have veered left, crossed the entire dirt median, both lanes of westbound traffic, plowed thru the low ditch alongside the road, and come to a halt pointing in the direction I found it in.
Looks like other than needing a change of underwear, no further damage is likely to have occurred.
Is that on Hwy 93? If so, they're likely dodging those knee deep pot holes. I've never seen a road as bad as that. I figured if I fell asleep at the wheel and the ride got smooth I'd better wake up because I've left the road.
okay there might not be a DUI element but he still needs to be charged with vehicular homicide for three people
As a trucker: this guy is full of it, he was either not paying attention on the phone or falling asleep.
DUI doesn’t mean alcohol only, medication impairs your driving ability also.
In some states if you admit to taking Benedryl, you can be charged with DUI. Any medication that has a machinery warning.
He can’t speak English, which part of the southern border did he cross? And if that’s true how is he holding a commercial license.
Probably part of some government resettlement program. He's almost certainly from Rwanda and they like to place them in northern cities for some reason.
And why did he let his DOT physical get that far out to the last day.
Probably a “newcomer” from Haiti or Somali.
The last name "Rafiki" has multiple possible origins. Here are a few: 1. Swahili Origin: In Swahili, "Rafiki" means "friend." It is a common word used in East Africa and sometimes adopted as a last name. Swahili is a Bantu language spoken by many people in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda

He must have been high as a kite
Man. No more American truck driver. Come here and drive and get your green card !
That location is the top of a steep grade coming out of Laughlin. He couldn’t have been going very fast. Certainly not fast enough for wind to push him sideways.
Not only does he not have the ability to safely operate a truck, Claude Rafiki also appears to not have the ability to close his mouth, its literally just hanging open waiting for flies every time the camera pans to him
Yeah apparently they will give a CDL to any mouth breather with a pulse these days
It's an evolutionary trait in order to catch flies.
It's what they do in africa to collect flies for food

He steared into the oncoming lanes. It was obvious.
Wind doesn't blow you into the other side of a highway
in the case of a semi pulling a trailer.. .yes it does... and can easily flip one on its side
@WrenchS13 no it doesn't. I've driven CMV's for 20 years with over 3 million miles and the worst thing I've experienced is wind gusts slightly push me into the next lane in which you quickly recover.
@@Takaride OK I'm not defending this guy in anyway in fact I'm blasting him all over the comment section but you're talking out your ass like Joe Biden 😂😂😂😂. Well I’m a truck driver for 21 years so far and no way the wind push the semi to the other side of the road why he don’t slow down and stop. I think you fell asleep or he was drunk
Throw in in prison. For ever
That’s very unprofessional. That’s a shame! How does he not realize he’s on the wrong side after correcting himself when he passed the first vehicle
This dude really said the wind was the reason he was in the opposite lanes going the wrong direction.....for real? That's what youre going with? Wow...
