    This is Joshua Underwood, Founder, CEO and head of product development at RADIAN. Thank you for the video and your questions on the rolling update to the RAMJET barrel profile on our patented INTRA-LOK mounting interface for the AFTERBURNER. Also, I would like to personally thank you for being a valued Radian customer. It’s obvious you have great taste in product design.
    At RADIAN we have three main pillars of product design and list them in this order of priority:
    1. Functional Performance
    2. Aesthetic Design
    3. Manufacturability
    During the initial design phase of the RAMJET + AFTERBURNER we had two versions, one being the original product we brought to market and the other a traditional looking round muzzle profile. I argued that the “tear drop” barrel comp would slip straight on without any thought to the user for orientation (function) and it looked really awesome as well (aesthetics). Another member of the engineering team argued that the circle comp would be able to be twisted during removal to help break it free from carbon (function) and that with a very simple turned crown it would save cost (manufacturability). As with everything, in engineering there are pros and cons to navigate at every turn. I ultimately made the decision to choose my function of auto orientation and aesthetics over the simpler, less sexy standard barrel profile.
    Over time, feedback received from customers and from our own experience confirmed that the only negative of the design is that shooters that put a high round count down range struggle to remove the AFTERBURNER because of carbon lock. Yes, the instructions say to use a solvent to soak it in and that works. The downside is needing to wait for it to sit and do its work on the carbon.
    Based on this, we chose to make a rolling change that retained the aesthetics of the original design (still requiring extensive matching of details on the muzzle end of the barrel) and adding the function of allowing the user to twist the comp to break it free of carbon during removal greatly improving the process.
    The very minimal trade off is that you need to get the comp approximately oriented before dropping the taper screw into the comp, once it is in the hole as can be seen in your video the rotation is very limited and as you tighten the screw the taper interface of the screw and the angled V groove in the barrel perfectly time the RAMJET & AFTERBURNER together just as accurately as the original design with zero play remaining. We’ve proven this with repeatability testing in a machine with a .0001” resolution indicator. Across the entire top surface of the AFTERBURNER the repeatability is around .0003”!
    So, to sum up the rationale for the design change, it was for a functional improvement while maintaining aesthetics and the associated manufacturing cost that goes with that. The reason we didn’t announce this revision was that we see it as an improvement and didn’t want to adversely affect sales of the last units in inventory of the original design that were represented in all of the sales channels. Anyone receiving the new version is in a sense getting more than they anticipated at the same price point. We put our products through rigorous testing and take seriously the feedback of our customers and for this reason made this moderate improvement in the design. It added lots of cost to updating and changing the manufacturing process and inventory control etc. but we will always choose improvement over cost savings wherever feasible.
    You mention in your video your concern that the comps are not compatible between both barrels and if you ever had an issue with a barrel you’d not be able to move a comp over to the other barrel. No need to be concerned as every Radian product is guaranteed, so if you ever had an issue with a RADIAN product, simply send it back to us and we would repair or replace it at no cost.
    Regarding our customer service; Our goal internally is to respond to every customer within 24 hours worst case. This was our first week back from SHOT Show with limited team in the office. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I believe this response will cover your questions and concerns.
    Joshua Underwood

      I'm waiting on my Ramjet and afterburner to come in from Optics Planet. The one weapon shown in the video appears to be an aftermarket slide. My G19 has a Zev slide. I'm crossing my fingers the the assembly will pair up to this slide. I hadn't thought about this until after I made the purchase. All in all, every video I've watched about this assembly has been positive except for Trex and their only complaint was the cost. If that was the case, my weapon wouldn't be sporting an RMR...

    Radian got back to me and said this about your video: Just posted a comment on the video explaining the rolling update! Let us know if you have any questions. Long story short, high volume shooters were having issues with carbon lock and the tear drop profile prevented them from rotating the comp to break up carbon. This update has no negative effect on performance but allows users to spin the comp free which saves time. This design improvement will be implemented to all ab+rj’s going forward.

    • @2amichaelj
      @2amichaelj  Před 6 měsíci +20

      There's pros and cons to both. I personally dislike the change as the reason I bought the comp was so I could do regular maintenance. I'm a heavy shooter but I do clean my entire firearm after each use, including the barrel and comp. I put 750 rounds through my first generation ramjet and didn't have an issue with carbon locking.
      I appreciate the update and info either way. Thanks for taking the time to post a comment about it. I pinned it so others could see it too.

    • @2amichaelj
      @2amichaelj  Před 6 měsíci +11

      @@toml1446 don't know yet. I have to test this more. My foreseeable issue is going to be that taper pin and the undercut where it goes in the barrel. When you take it on and off, depending how much you do it and how much torque you put on it, will open up that channel the taper pin times the new design on. The intra-look or old design will time without it. You may not want to take it off as much due to this.
      I don’t know. Maybe I'm making a big deal out of nothing but from my little experience in CNC machining, this should be a lot easier to machine, quicker and should be cheaper. It's easier to machine a circle rather than a teardrop on both the comp and barrel.
      I'm still sticking by the generation 1 models are better and these 2nd generation are cheaper to produce.

    The reason they swapped it was very smart. i was confused when i got my new one as well but after they passed on why they did it, I completely understood. I've got a buddy that had his get seized onto the barrel and he couldn't get it off. honestly the new design is superior and it allows better user serviceability. I've run several thousand rounds through mine in the last 3 weeks zero issues with walking or the taper pin coming loose

    • @2amichaelj
      @2amichaelj  Před 4 měsíci +2

      If you just take it off and clean it after you use it, it's not an issue either way. First time I used the gen 1 I shot 500 that day out of it. It wasn't a problem to get it off. I'm wondering why people don't just take them off and clean them after being used. The whole point to a comp designed like this is the serviceability of the design, opposed to set screw and timed comps. How many rounds are people shooting to have it seized?
      I used to shoot a JTAC ranch before it shut down. The range officer who has a large CZcams channel was telling me he shot 2,000 rounds in a weekend during a pistol class they were having there and how much he loved how he could take it off and clean it after that. I'm seriously wondering how people are seizing their ramjets.

    I have two of these on my G45’s. I shoot 500 rounds a week in nightly COF classes. I can say for certainty when cleaning it is difficult to remove due to carbon buildup. I added gun grease to the inside and that helps to remove after soaking it first with shooters lube. So I can understand making it circular and how it could help. At the same time I can understand your point of the taper notch perhaps being an issue one day.

    I’m sure my comment will be lost in the matrix here. This new circular design helps for people who shoot a lot of rounds. The teardrop is extremely hard to remove if you shoot any number of rounds out of your gun. The circular design allows you to break it free much easier, and will prevent you from having the comp seized or locked to the barrel. The taper pin clocks and alignes the barrel. The teardrop is just preventing it from spinning. The notch the taper pin slides into, is precisely machined at the specific angle.
    Bottom line, the round one is better, you have to cut more material to make it, so it costs the same if not more to manufacture.
    Radian manufactures parts in the USA, and is of the highest quality. If something was out of spec with a component. The customer would never see it.

      It's not even after every range trip. If you clean it every 500 rounds or so it's fine. I shot 650 out of mine in a weekend and it didn't carbon lock which is why I'm wondering who said it was an issue? People who never clean their pistols? I know a few but they know what they're getting into by neglecting their firearms. I've throughly tested this with 5 of my own personal Ramjets and I'm in a circle of people who shoot a lot and 11 of them all have Ramjets. Not one has experienced carbon lock. One says he shot 2,000 rounds before cleaning it. He does maintain it. Cleans the comp, threads and greases the area where comp and barrel interface. No issues.

      Agency Arms makes the Sage comp which I about the same price and keeps the same 17 length as the PMM JTTC and Radian. Those are the only 3 that I know of that are real competitors. I've noticed other companies trying their hands in micro comps too. Ones called Alpha 6 Defense. Never heard of them so I'd be wary but they're making Gen 3 G19 and G17 micro comps so maybe a little patience might pay off with more options in the future. The issue I see is with taking on and off the taper pin, overtime stress on the groove the taper pin goes into will open up and the tolerances will get looser.
      It would've been nice for them to make their customers aware of the update as I wanted the exact same comp and barrel but now have 2 proprietary ones instead of 2 that interchange. I still like the old design better. If you clean the comp and barrel after 500-1,000 rounds like I do, you shouldn't any issues with carbon locking which is the reason they made the change as someone stated in my pinned comment.

      @@2amichaelj I'm pretty OCD with tiny firearms components as well, so I get where you're coming from. I also understand the frustration in wanting an identical component and getting something that works differently. They must have gotten complaints or the barrel legitimately seized up in the comp, enough that removal resulted in damage. I don't see how a different input on the CNC would create a huge cost savings, especially since these things are $400 a set. They probably thought, if down the line, people are chewing up barrels prematurely, they'll have a bigger headache.

    • @2amichaelj
      @2amichaelj  Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@9unslin9er I think it would be easier machining a circle rather than a tear drop, especially if it has to match sizes. I've worked with CNC machines. It's the line and detail work that costs more and is harder to machine. They're probably saving 30-60 minutes of machine work, 1-2 full steps of lathes and changing angles or machines from my understanding of the industry.
      The only way they could make the comp easier to take on and off from carbon locking is to loosen the tolerances too. I don’t know, I'm skeptical but that's just my personality.
      I can see what you're saying too. They could be doing something completely different with their CNC machines and it was 7 years ago when I worked with one.

    • @2amichaelj
      @2amichaelj  Před 3 měsíci

      I get it man. It's expensive as you're basically paying a premium for having a little heavier steel comp, keeping a smaller slide profile for holster compatibility and being able to easily take the comp on and off for cleaning and maintenance. That's basically what the extra $150-$200 is buying you compared to a standard threaded barrel ($100-$150) and comp ($50-$100) combo.
      The actual performance isn't that much better than the Agency 417, Suarez Street comp or Arc Division Sparc M V2 comps that I own. I think the weight at the end of the muzzle is probably the difference in recoil impulse. I personally think if any of the other comps were made out of steel, the performance would be exactly the same.
      The holsters are a big thing for me. I've already invested heavily in G17 holsters and I cannot OWB or IWB any of my other comped pistols without modifying my expensive holsters.

      Yes, but some holster manufacturers do open the ends of their holsters to accommodate threaded barrels and even full size comps. You can modify a holster pretty easily too if you're willing to dremel it.

    TLDR: I feel like you made this video to complain. Rather than present us with information or the why behind the change.
    Listen I liked the Cat and I like quality of video but your only evidence to call the prior gen superior is one spins and the other doesn’t? Once the screw is in none other them spin and it’s not possible to mess it up because there’s only one screwhole.
    Then you want $20 back because they shaved off 1 micron of material? Honestly, this is why people quit the firearms industry. Unrealistic expectations and a generally under informed audience who will make a youtube video and generate a “problem” that doesn’t actually exist. Maybe ask them for education before making a video next time. That way you can inform us of the technical reasons the change was made. Rather than just presenting your opinion and falsely assuming one is superior or inferior and then demanding money back for a tiny wee bit removed material.

    • @2amichaelj
      @2amichaelj  Před 6 měsíci +2

      It doesn't have anything to do with material removed. I worked in a machine shop for some time and it takes a lot more time to machine something like a tear drop rather than a circle. If they're saving 1 hour worth of labor that's a lot. If they skip 1-2 steps or don't have to change positions or dies it's a lot. I would argue it's probably saving them $50-75 in labor for each part. The labor and machining is what you're paying for with this.
      They call it the "intra-lok" system. I didn't call it that, Radian did. It no longer has the intra-lok. The only thing keeping the comp from turning or staying timed is the taper pin now. Pin holes open after being used. It's inevitable. The intra-lok or tear drop design will still keep the comp timed without the taper pin. The first generation is a better designed and more expensive product to produce.

      It really depends on preference and application. After shooting with a lot of people over years I've found the most reliable are mil spec type triggers or non cartridge style like LaRue, Geissele/ALG or even a Schmid. That doesn't mean a cartridge style trigger is bad, but you're more likely something will fail on them and they're harder to clean.
      Some I've liked are Blackout Defense, CMC, and Triggertech. There's a ton of cartridge style triggers and I don't feel a huge difference between the single stage ones.
      Preference would be 2 stage or single stage. I'm more precise with 2-stage triggers and actually shoot better with them but single stages are great for fast follow up shots and split times.
      Some of my favorites are:
      Geissele SSA, G2S, and the SSP. You can switch out the SSA for an SSA-E, SSA-X or a SSA-EX
      LaRue MBT-2S
      Hiperfire X2S mod 2 and Enhanced Duty
      ALG ACT
      Rise Armament RA-535
      Blackout Defense Zero trigger
      Some economical around $100 triggers that I like are
      Triggertech Duty (single or 2-stage)
      LaRue MBT-2S
      Geissele G2S
      CMC (when around $110, they make a lot of triggers for other companies that are rebranded)
      Schmid 2 stage (they also make a lot of 2 stage triggers for other brands)
      Hiperfire Enhanced Duty (the only differences between the Sharpshooter, Heavy Gunner and Marksman are the shape of the trigger shoes)
      My absolute favorite if money is not a factor is the Geissele SSA-X for 2 stage and a Geissele SSP curved bow for single stage.
