The seasons, hot and cold all add to it, and you’re right, it’s madness! But madness and chaos and addiction work together, hand in hand!
I agree, what the city has done is totally irresponsible. To allow a problem like addiction to go managed for decades without intervention is nothing more than criminal, considering 1488 people lost their lives to unintentional drug overdoses last year!
To be totally honest, I don’t understand why the Feds haven’t stepped in. This shit is costing the government/taxpayers 100’s of millions of dollars every year and has nothing to show for it!

This is ridiculous. What exactly was cleaned? The streets? The graffitti off the buildings?
What was the purpose of the cleaning?
I'm a retired mental health social worker. Cleaning the streets isn't going to do jack all.
    1. These people are here because of many things - mental illness, abuse, despair, drug addiction, distrust..........................
    2. You can't save all of them. Some people don't want to be saved.
    3. Help is multifaceted - mental health, housing, counseling, medications, job training, medical, food, clothing etc. It is ongoing and takes a long time - committment and is expensive.
    4. Then what do you do with the people who don't want help?
    5. And then there is the cost of doing all these things. The city doesn't want to pay for it, the government doesn't want to nor do the citizens.
So we're right back where we started.

    • @ronferguson9695
      @ronferguson9695 Před 20 dny +1

Very well said, and I can feel your frustration through your comment!
I agree, moving people on and cleaning the streets is the easy part. Keeping them away and getting them well…. That’s going to be a huge challenge!
Addiction isn’t just about the drugs, as you said, it’s a multi layered insidious disease that affects the mind, body and soul and distorts rational thinking!
Nothing I’ve seen or heard about the blitz on Kensington Avenue addressed those issues!
So for me, it came down to Mayor Parker keeping an election promise to shut down the open air drug market, getting the addicts off the streets and cleaning the place up!!!!
What was actually achieved was, the open air drug market was sent underground!!!
The addicts moved two blocks down and one block over because that’s where the dealers said they would be!
Oh, and the streets were washed and sanitised!
Go Mayor Parker…… that’s a bit mean, she’s actually done more in past 130 of power than previous mayor’s have done for many years!
I’ve heard reports she has put together a rehabilitation super centre to help treat as many of these as possible in a 30 day treatment program for those who want help. I believe 39 addicts took advantage of the offer during the cleanup! Unfortunately some were also arrested!
Like you said, what’s this actually achieved!
Without ongoing support and outpatient care upon discharge or release, they will be straight back on the streets starting the process again!
The whole process is fundamentally flawed!
Key issues aren’t being addressed as you mentioned and the shit show will continue….

    • @ronferguson9695
      @ronferguson9695 Před 12 dny +2

I understand your frustration and you make some valid points, but we must be realistic in our expectations regarding Kensington Avenue and its future!
As you know, addiction is a social issue, you can’t stop people from doing dumb shit. Whether it’s tobacco, alcohol, gambling or drugs, if we want to participate in there use, we will and no one can stop us! History shows the these 4 social issues have plagued society for thousands of years and nothing will change that! So as you can appreciate, the task ahead of Mayor Parker is a monstrous one and it will take many months if not years for any meaningful results to be achieved!
      I think that’s being realistic!
Like you, I thought the clean up was a waste of time and taxpayer dollars but I’ve come to realise two very important things happened that day. Firstly, she had the place cleaned up because she promised the community she would! Second, and most importantly she had the encampments uprooted and the addicts dispersed around the corner and surrounded streets! She has coped a hammering for this on social media but there is method in the madness!
In previous administrations, the DA, Larry Krasner decided that arresting drug addicts had no value and only clogged up the prison system! This basically tied law enforcement hands and allowed the open air drug maker to thrive and the addicts do as the like!
Mayor Parker, on the other hand, has a totally different attitude!
Now Kensington Avenue is barricaded off and the addict have been dispersed, they are now being constantly harassed and told to move on, if they don’t comply, they are arrested!
This is the key to Mayor Parker’s strategy to clean up and manage Philadelphias drug issues!
Once they are arrested, they are offered a choice between 30 days in rehab or 30 days in jail!
The people who choose rehab are sent to the rehabilitation super centre which Parker has established on the other side of town. There they receive treatment and support to help them tap into all the government services available, mental health services, counselling, clinical care services, education services even housing support!
Like you said, addiction is a serious multi faceted disease and rehabilitation must be holistic, focused on the mind, body and soul, and the individual needs of the patient!
To be honest, I think Parker is shacking the system to the core! As for the addicts who choose prison, they receive in house rehab care!
Upon discharge or release, both parties are given the opportunity to continue their journey to recovery! There is outpatient care, mental health support and social support, everything they need to change their lives if they want it bad enough!
As for the people who choose to return to the streets, they fall back into the cycle of, loiter, arrest, rehab or jail and release. Over time the Groundhog Day cycle begins to overwhelm the individual and for some, better choices are made!
This system is gaining traction in many cities around the world and the results are encouraging!!
This certainly isn’t a silver bullet to solve the drug crisis in the US, nothing will. But it could be a step in the right direction!
As for those who have chosen to stay in the lifestyle they have grown accustomed to…… I think in the very near future, our government will take a more authoritarian approach to managing the issue! Laws will change, rights and freedoms will be removed for the safety of the individual and the community, and we will see the return of long term assisted care in treatment sanitariums.
I don’t condone this outcome, but it does have merit!
Many addicts with advanced drug dependence fall into the special needs category. The likelihood of them ever recovering is low. Their cognitive impairment is usually significantly and they exhibit limited fine and gross motor function! Many of them would have also lost basic life skills like personal hygiene and social interaction. Leaving these people on the streets to meet their demise is not humane.

      @@_Miss_K_
To say addiction is by choice over simplifies the disease. No on wakes up one day and says, hey I’m going to be a drug addict, that is simply nonsense!
Addiction is an insidious disease that affects the mind, body and soul of someone. It alters reality and how we perceive ourselves and others around us! It prays on the vulnerable and their emotions and comforts them with a blanket of false hope, it is ruthless!
It has many layers and every time one is pealed off, there is just another ugly layer underneath!
I agree, choice plays its role in addiction but clinically research shows its part can be small! The bigger role that needs to be addressed is the why…. What was the catalyst for the addiction!
For many young people, peer pressure, their home environment, mental health, physical and emotional trauma, abuse of the worst kind, exposure to drugs, proscription or illicit etc,one or all of these factors can contribute to addiction!
As an example, peer pressure can be a major contributing factor to addiction! Experimentation and recreational drug use with friends, sharing a joint with friends, taking a pill or two at a dance party, can quickly become a habit!
Exposure to drugs can also be another gateway to drug use and addiction! Multi generational drug use where patients and relatives expose their children to drugs ate a young age. Mum and dad do it, so can I.
Then we can look at the effects of physical, emotional and psychological trauma. The effects of this can be devastating to a person of any age and for some, they will carry the scars for their lifetime!
You could say that everyone has some sort of trauma through their lives or they’ve suffered abuse and got over it, and that’s very true!
They can process it, or seek professional help, or just lock it away.
They can then pick themselves up, dust themselves off and move on as if nothing happened!
But unfortunately for some, they can’t. They will fall in a spiral of despair, depression, anxiety, self blame, anger, and self loathing etc. They may seek help, but when the treatment program concludes they’re addicted to the drugs that helped them cope. As results, they will turn to street drugs and self medicate!
I read and hear the same stories over and over and over again, and they all have a common thread, they are unable or unwilling to deal with the trauma they have experienced and find peace and comfort in their own way!
In a recent case study I read, a mother who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and addicted to heroin and cocaine, sold her 12 year old daughter to her pimp for 4 bags of dope and some pills! The pimp then prostituted the 12 year old girl (high on meth) out to MEN for 2 years until she fell pregnant at age 14 to the pimp him self! 6 weeks after the birth of her child, she was returned to the streets and continued working for her pimp! 6 months later she was arrested and placed in custody for 2 years! The baby was left in the care of the father (the pimp.) At 17, she was released and returned to the streets and the father and child were gone. Now in her 30’s she still works the streets she did as children, but on her own! She has no idea who has, or what happened to child and she is emotionally, mentally and physically broken!
There is a lot more to this case study than I have mentioned but it gives you an idea of the level of trauma and its associated effects on the individual! This particular case continues to haunt me, and I find it very difficult to comprehend and consider a satisfactory conclusion about addiction being a choice.
Yes, there were bad choices made but they were driven by individual circumstances.
I look forward to your response!

I agree with you to a point, taking drugs is a choice but for some, that choice is removed.
Multi generational addiction, where children are exposed to drug use from a very young age!
Where peer pressure is involved at a young age to experiment with drugs!
When a mother use drugs during pregnancy and the baby is born addicted to drugs!
Do these children have a choice or is the choice made for them??

I’m not too sure about the Beta test theory…
What you’re seeing in this video and many like it is called a Social Issue! They are created humans and have plagued society for millennia. Tobacco, alcohol and gambling are also serious social issues just like drug use! As I said, we’re the problem, if we want something, we get it! If we can’t have it, we want it more! It doesn’t matter if we need it, whether it’s good or bad for us, whether it’s illegal or not, if we want it, it’s ours. This behaviour is part of the human condition, it’s in our DNA.
Governments have no control over social issues, prohibition proved that in the 1920’s and 30’s. The opium war in the 1840’s didn’t stop the opium trade either!
There is no silver bullet, there is no magic formula…. Drugs are here to stay!
      And that’s fuckin frightening!

The best way I can put it is…..
      It’s still a shit show!!
This is what I saw and heard during the cleanup!
Most of the homeless and drug addicts left the area a day before the cleanup! The people who stayed were offered rehabilitation services or 30 days in jail! 39 addicts took advantage of rehabilitation the remaining were taken into custody!
As for the people that left before the cleanup, they were setting in 2 blocks down and 1 block over from Kensington Avenue!
The open air drug market is no longer in sight but I suspect it has moved underground! The dealers were waiting for addicts who moved before the cleanup!
When the area was cleared, the city arrived and contacted trash and people’s belongings, then power washed the sidewalks and sanitised the whole area then barricades were installed along the sidewalks!
Lastly, the politicians did interviews, photos, pattered each other on the back and left!
      Is it improving…….?
Only time will tell, moving people on and cleaning the streets is the easy part!Keeping them away and getting them well….. that’s going to be tough!
Some have already started to return in the side streets!
Are they trying to help or cracking down on it…..?
They are trying to help the people who want help. 39 agreed to go to rehab! Hopefully they’re still there! There were also other service providers there at the time…. So, yeah, I think they are trying to help them!
As for the crack down….. hell yeah! A big part of Mayor Parker’s election campaign was based on cleaning up Kensington Avenue!
The community is watching, so is the media! The reds are watching as well as the Feds and November elections are coming! To be honest, there’s a lot at play here, and it will take many months before we really see any real progress! Every change must be measured and meaningful also cost effective and sustainable. 3 years ago the place was cleaned up and it all turned to shit again!
It has to be done right or it’s just more wasted funding!

@ronferguson9695 Wow! That was so kind of you to offer such a comprehensive reply. You really covered the bases, and I appreciate it so much. I'm wondering if the city is preparing for gentrification as the property values hit bottom. Stylish living apartments, niche restaurants and shops, etc. The economy is hitting many people hard, but as usual, "the rich get richer and the poor get the picture." SO, a mixed bag, maybe. Anyway, I'll continue to follow the story, as I have lived on both sides of that fence! Again, a big and sincere thanks for your understanding and sharing. Best wishes to you...and the Kensington Krazy area! 🏢🏣🏥🏦🏨🏩🏪🏫....💞

You’re so welcome, glad I was able to help out! As you can tell, I spend far too much time watching these videos, but I find Kensington Avenue’s story really interesting!
Like you, I think the city has big plans for Kensington Avenue and the surrounding areas! Getting the place cleaned up makes it much more attractive to investors and developers! I’ve heard property are selling for around 400K I believe so that will drive the demographic growth!
Again, like you said, the rich get richer and the poor will get forgotten!
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next!
      Take care. 😀

I am Japanese and cannot speak English at all. In Japan, I have no experience to see homeless people at all in daily life。 In 2023、Japanese population was 124,000,000 and the number of homeless people was 3,065 from Hokkido to Okinawa(Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare) After seeing this CZcams, I became tearful and could not sleep at night. In this CZcams, I imagine every homeless person’s character is good and gentle. I want to invite one of them to my small Japanese house. People are sitting on the road and some of them sleep deeply even during the daytime after getting many drugs. As one of the Japanese, I wonder why many American people became like this homeless. The reason is very simple. Everybody living in this world always fights many different kinds of problems. At that time, if there were some good social systems to support suffering people, people would not depend on drugs. I am very ugly in the US Politicians especially Mr.Biden and Mr.Trump .The two gentlemen can be seen on CNN many times, but, always talk about the US being great again and supporting Israel's killing Palestinian babies, children, and women 32,070 and never talk about the miserable lovely homeless people in Kensington at all. The number of people killed by guns in the USA in 2022 is 44,357(by Gun Violence Archive). The number of people killed by guns in Japan in 2022 is 4(Metropolitan Police Department)

As a Japanese, your comment sounds sensible and sensitive. Kudos!
US culture is different: some commenters in this CZcams forum pity a dog left on the street, rather than their fellow citizens. That's how low the US culture has fallen.
You and I are not even US residents, yet we feel compassion for our fellow human beings, thousands of miles away.
