Distant City Studios - A Drum Room With A Difference!

  • If you want a better drum sound, you can change the drummer, or the mics, or the drum kit... but what about the room?
When Joss Worthington set about rebuilding his studio, he decided to create a space that would inspire musicians and allow engineers to shape the sound at will. In this SOS video, Joss and Chris Smout of Studio People show us how they turned the idea into reality, with the help of drummer Lee Hudson.

Great idea! Another great idea: tune the snare drum and loosen the snares a tad, so it doesn't sound like the bottom of the drum is made of rubber. God, I can't even bear the sound of that snare, had to stop video. Sorry for the comment, but someone has to say something.

If you could hook up the motor control to a midi controller somehow, you could use your DAW to program some push or pull effects during tracking: i.e. pull up and away at the end of a song, as if to be saying “bye-bye” or slow drawing closer from far to near during an intro.

I thought the same thing then i thought maybe they don't want everyone copying their design considering it's what makes their studio unique. I dunno just a thought, otherwise it seems silly that they would forget to get a shot from straight up.

A few points after listening on headphones:
Drummer doesn’t really hit rim shots on the snare which makes it sound like paper, especially with the bottom snare mic mixed so high here. Tuning of the snare, approx a C#, is fine, but the drum isn’t played in a very flattering way.
    - The third groove with the cymbal wash really shows how the higher ceiling keeps the cymbals more controlled and less stereo, while the lower height makes the cymbals slightly more pronounced with a wider and splashier stereo image. The snare also seems to sound more focussed with the higher ceiling because the cymbals are more controlled, but the loud mix of snare bottom mic here makes it hard to really hear the snare’s low mid character in just the snare top, oh and room mics.
    - A room like this would benefit from having adjustable acoustic treatment. The ceiling height seems to affect image and bleed more than tone. Perhaps some adjustable curtains on the walls would be a good addition.

Well I must say that I almost didn't hear any difference at all. So I wouldn't invest in something which wasn't clearly noticeable. What I would like to hear was the room mics soloed, also the room mics on a fixed position while the ceiling moves. Also the panning is messed up because the Ride/Crash on the right is coming from the right, but when the ceiling comes down, it starts coming out heavily from the left. Also the HH is coming from the right when it's clearly on the left. All in all such a waste of promo imo, and nothing that can't be done in a normal room. So yeah, this for me leans on a gimmicky side of things.

Yeah, I bought a used R.V./ travel trailer, gutted all the furniture. The "studio" still has a full bathroom and kitchen. Put my gear in. Full drum set, completely miced-up. Shure 57s.ect. by the time those drum tracks hit my computer edits, It does not matter AT ALL where I captured the drums. They sound amazing in a 8×24 R.V. its 2021, the rooms don't mean shit anymore, I was slightly concerned at first, did nothing to help the room sound better, just went for it, glad I didn't spend thousands on making the room right lol. "Placebo" and the "Power of suggestion" has a lot to do with it. Blindfold test, no-one could tell shit when it comes to "rooms". I have a diploma in Audio Engineering. In not just spit ball'n

Lovely idea & video & studio folx attitude!
    👍👍👍
In the video, though, heavily missing
    A) those ceiling drum room mics solo'ed, i.e. alone, not mixed with the rest of the mics
    B) some upwards pointed shots of that ceiling moving, as the drummer would see it looking up
    C) a couple of different snares or different tunings of this one - not crazy about it.
Anyway, congrats to all involved, and the town itself looks quite cinematic/fairytale inspiring, too!

Waste of time and money, just something to talk about and over analyze, yeah a higher ceiling gives a little more ambience but I am not paying someone to sit in a control room to raise and lower the ceiling just because he built it. You can overcome most of these "problems" with correct mic placement.
