I went to a book festival in Wales many years ago when the children were small. We were camping 8n some fields above the town that was holding it. I knew he was playing, but couldn't get tickets. Put the kids to bed, and then heard the whole damned performance from half a mile away. All the greats, including this song. Somehow it was even eerier through the twilight, across a river and through the canvas. Just chills

The first time I heard this song was live, in concert and he was so intense he scared the hell out of me. And I loved it!
My first time was also live, solo, acoustic with at least two broken strings which he took in stride, as if they were still there. Breaks my heart and brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it.
I always imagine someone only hearing the soft introduction and immediately sharing it with their love before they've listened to the rest.
If heartbreak made a noise, this is that sound.

This song is amazing. One of Costello's best, for sure. They used it in the film Only You. A beautiful and painful love story.

@@telefred61 I kind of get it with that explanation, but I'd prefer to say it's a song about sexual jealousy. Many people might equate 'sexual jealousy' with what we usually call 'romantic love' and I'm not saying they're right or they're wrong. They might be either. But this is clearly the greatest song ever written about sexual jealousy or romantic love - whichever one you think it's about!
This is a song best sung in a dark cold lonely room. Not meant for an acoustically challenged environment. Breaking my heart because it, as original, is, The. Ultimate.
Not just a love song...but a lot of anxiety in his voice and sometimes atonic guitar all the frustration is in this song. Never I heard this in a song so original!

This was my go to song when my ex left me for someone else. It's sick, emotional and desribes very well what goes on inside during a heavy breakup.
Its been 30 years but this song takes me back to that time of torture. I never thought that there existed such a pain.

I was lucky to watch his spinning songbook live at Newcastle, some lucky folk went on stage and spun the wheel and had a dance/beer while the band played the song, excellent as always.
