I am black, I didn't know he was in russia, I thought he was stuck in noob corner and that's why he expanded so aggressively next to me. My goal was to remove him from orient, confine him to the west and chill a bit until I figured who was strong and who wasn't. It really surprised me to see him come back from the north.

@FreePete Thanks Pete, I did find you kinda rough with me in the video but I guess that's the thing with fog, it's hard sometimes to understand the reason for another player's strategy. Just wished I had played you in one of my better games, been going through a rough few games lately 😂

The suspense was great, Pete had decided he could not take your cap without orange killing him, I can well see from your point of view that Pete's going so aggressively into Asia was a big threat to you and of course as he was getting so many a turn he was just using all his reinforcements to play around on a new part of the board, so you obviously had to get him out of there.
I think Pete, as he had a 2 point hold on Russia, should have taken Eastern Europe, then you would have got that, maybe broke him a turn, then would have seen the strong Russia hold
And then together swept the board.

I think that's the part that got to Pete.
As you know Russia is difficult to get and hold, so your nearest neighbour fist bumping 2 other players is a huge concern, especially when your thinking of an early kill.
The fact that Pete got Russia on turn one was a major factor, as the cards were not worth anything, and so the kill was not worth it either.
Pete had figured out red had the newb corner pocket and maybe France, yellow had some stuff around North Africa, Spain and orange had Denaric alps and maybe France.
So apart from you next to him, there were 3 players holding bonuses.
If Pete got your kill and 2 or 3 had turned on him, he would be finished before the progressive cards came into play.
How the heck red let yellow get so strong and why yellow killed Pete's blocking stack later on in the game, is the big question ???
Why did he do that ?
He was in for 2nd or 1st if he just chilled. On seeing g that he should hwve watched then watched for the kill from France and then launched his big stack.
So why did red not go for yellow when Pete gave him the chance by opening Scotland, these 2 players were clearly getting cards off each other in France and UK.
Yellow was so much stronger than red, and could keep him off bonuses, so how did red survive so long ?
To me it appeared they were the ones working together.

being an expert ranked player myself, having learned from yours truly and Kylted, I'm starting to feel confident in my abilities to still climb on the ladder. Like what the hell? Hitting obvious cardblock stacks is just deleting troops, even if you feel like holding a grudge, there's more subtle ways to do it, like to just sit and chill while the other players keep at it, deleting their own troops. Sometimes the best way to fight your enemies is to just sit back, grab a handful of popcorn and enjoy the carnage xD

@@_Goldenear that doesn't mean it was a good play to make. Novices have beat grandmasters but that doesn't mean they played well or are better players than the GM. Yellow was bad enough to break the cardblock on Red, and Red was bad enough to suicide into Pete. Both are bad plays that resulted in them "beating him"

Perhaps not that likely, but can it be that Reds cap was open to Yellow at the moment Pete tried to cardblock Red? Maybe Yellow thought "Wait a minute, I now get Reds 400+ stack into me, gotta make sure that Red can go the other way". Just a thought. 🙂
Hi Pete! Long time viewer and first time participant! I was red in this game. I think my biggest mistake was not taking out white just before you did. As for my other moves, acid_ibis4214’s comments are pretty spot on. In the end, I am glad everyone got such a good laugh from the episode and my mistakes, you included! Best of Luck!

Yes, maybe Pete expecting you, in some kind of mind meld, to go all around the world, to hit a very strong yellow, after Pete had card blocked you, AND YELLOW CAME TO YOUR AID, by killing Pete's blocking stack - was a bit much haha 😂
What a game
I found it weird how from the very beginning everyone was buddy-buddy with each other with every fist bump emoji in the game, but no one wanted to be Pete's friend... First black teaming with orange , yellow teaming with white never breaking his bonus and only breaking Pete , red teaming with yellow, and yellow literally handing the green kill to red...
Honestly an impossible game...
yellow had multiple turns early he could have hit Pete's weak 10 cap, and Red only had to go through a 4 stack to break his Russia but never did. Everyone was friendly with him until he attacked them
He even said himself black could only go in 1 direction, and that's where Pete decided to put all of his troops. Of course black is going to start hitting him in that situation, it's his only way of expanding

@FreePete i think you hitting the experts bonuses and opening their capitals was seen as a aggressive play and yellow never forgave you for that. And you did kill reds buddy on his border and you were killing alot of people so 🤷🏽♂️. It seemed they have a mentality of fixed which where alot of beginners start at. Yellow was homies with you in the beginning and wanted to trade with you but you made things to wierd and complicated with your stacks on his border which was seen as aggressive which confused him then you broke him which set him off for the rest of the game but you did have yellow as a ally at one point
Black never had a chance to team with anyone.
@@FreePetetbh that one turn where you attacked everyone was uncharacteristic of your style of play. If you isolated yellow I think could have out produced and out played him and then beaten red with troop advantage. But understand that red was the faster player so probably better to avoid the 1v1 with. Overall well done to play that so close.
Edit: another thought is that they both probably realized you were ranked above them and were too dangerous to go to end game with. I'm starting to see a lot of parallels between risk and survivor. Strong allies are not necessarily a good thing as they can turn at the wrong time.

Yep. Very easy to get teamed on. You can imagine that the example of you lost to this thing hence this thing can't be a bad thing is a flawed argument right?
Consider the alternative that there are other intentions at play, and you lost because of a teaming strategy. Going forward, the strategy of your play should be to not make yourself a target by not appearing to be a good player, is my advice
For a while you had a good thing going with yellow, but trying to force them to change where they were getting a card was definitely seen as aggressive, putting them in a position where your capital was opened and you could smack them. Red seemed passive until you hit his precious Scandinavia that he didn’t even hold lol then it was a blood war
I think red saw it as aggression based on him actually having his stack open on the next turn without Pete breaking Scandi. So Red thought he only did it to break
I sometimes give "advice" with time stamps, know that I do that mostly to entertain the thought for myself and sometimes to get insights from the pete. Just like chess it helps to look at other peoples games and just review what you would do and whats to improve, it doesn't mean I'm a better player in any way shape or form. Idk have a comment😅

I would call what i do simply commentary, when i time stamp thoughts, not advice, not really, i'm not nearly at that level. but yes it's like guessing the next move and being confidant pete did the same, as the "correct answer" as it were a lot of the time, (not exclusively though).

To be fair, it was obvious that both Yellow and Red were weak players relatively early on. Especially the moment Yellow tried to roll the 3v1 to break a second bonus of yours once you moved the card trade spot with them. No good player would go for that break, and if you were planning to break, then you'd have sent more troops in to begin with so that you'd have a guaranteed break. So, once you realize that a player is weak, it changes the dynamic entirely in terms of how you interact with them. You might not be able to set up a card block that requires teamwork to establish, and they might perceive helpful actions (e.g. you opening up Red's capital so that they can counterstrike Yellow) as acts of aggression. They also miss obvious plays such as taking kills, understanding what is happening on the board, and so on.
Final point: Expert rank in this game means "Beginner", Master means "Intermediate", and Grandmaster means "Expert".
Weak experts is very funny to me
I always took to the stats, I am sometimes a beginner, sometimes an expert and sometimes a Master, depends if I can be bothered to play each game seriously to the death or not.
But if I have played 1000 game and won 350 of them, you had better take me more seriously than someone who has played 50 ranked games and won 3.

I'm surprised you didn't think red an expert, he definitely was.
He took the orange kill very cleanly.
He knew in the early game to not break you while hitting white.
After capping in the corner he made sure to bring stacks off to try and get cards in the center.
He didn't take your kill because it seemed to easy, like why would yellow leave you with just 3 troops left and a 32 stack literally right next to them.
He also killed you the following turn cleanly too.
The only thing he missed was that you opening his cap was so he could stay involved in the game and yellow not kill you.
red suicided into his 200 cap the previous turn, feeding the kill to yellow. He saw yellow take out his final position in Russia, but run out of time to finish the kill. He also would have seen the Cap Leader move to 5/6 after Yellow took both caps, so he knew all of Pete's remaining troops had to be off cap. There was no reason not to at least go looking for the kill
Also looks very much like he hit a 200 cap to hold +3 scandi 😅😂

Yeah, I think red saw yellow as a better match up for them in a 1v1. Opening the cap line was a good excuse to just turn around and hit Pete.
Knowing that Yellow was massive, perhaps Red thought getting second was the best that he/she could get. That, or he/she was getting tired of the game and looked for a way to not let it dwell for much longer.
If Pete ever stops posting, my first assumption will be that he has gotten a hernia from an intense “Europe Advanced Progressive Capitals” opener.

I personally think you just made too many enemies there; they were all keeping each other in check, slowing each other down and nobody was opposing you, I thought everything up to and including removing white from the east was excellent, and if you'd allowed yellow to trade with you in orient, he would have used his troops elsewhere whilst his cap remained locked to you, you still would've held the largest section of the board with few troop losses. They would have addressed each other until you were large beyond control; after that, you could have picked the moment to take yellow's Africa cap, with no repercussion possible as yellow couldn't go through the cap and this would have been unbeknownst to both white and red and would then have been effectively card blocked or forced into white. I think when you attacked the whole board, that was the moment that lost the game for you. GG though Pete, good content as always!

As far as binds go, I know some easy changes that should be ToS legal ie not automated macros. I have a naga mouse and synapse which is a time saver but its not required since we're just rebinding keys and thats also possible via registry. I rebound my right click to be enter, mouse keypad 1 to left arrow, and mouse keypad 2 to right arrow. If you have a mouse with at least forward and back buttons, those could also be used as left and right arrow. The naga also has an inherent DPI switch button with 5 custom preset DPIs. Anything that eliminates my need of a keyboard or my 2nd hand at all helps increase my speed greatly.
I went from playing on mobile for my first few months to playing on my fiancee's laptop with my gaming mouse Ive had collecting dust for years just this week and omg its a whole new game. I still wish they would put this game on Xbox so I wasn't limited to only playing between midnight and 6:00 a.m. but oh well.
Doesn't help that the two risk games that are on Xbox are absolute dogshit after playing this one first.

Black looks like he's going to be a nightmare and needs to be removed early. It's interesting that you've been toying with him with orient.

Perhaps they were collaborating? They never hit each other meaningfully when they were in the 3-person. They blew the card block. They were both happy to go very negative to take you out the game. Maybe this is just confirmation bias

No, Red did take a capital of Yellow at some point (and not long after, Yellow took it back). I think they just disliked Pete in this game and wanted to go first and second.
I also thought they were collaborating…until Red missed the Pete kill at the end (the first time), lol
@@MegaChrizI agree Mega, Pete just passed yellow off big time to many times there.. and yellow saw himself as the lucky player with 3 caps and a god position, as soon as Pete stopped taking back his countries it wax game over in this one, as the cards were not worth enough ag this point.

I think we interpret the fist-bump very differently. To me it's a "grr- this means war", "you hit me, I'm going to nail you to the floor" it's kind of a 'two bulls locking horns' emote. I've never seen it as a 'homie' fist bump.
Everyone is using it as 'you be cool with me I'll be cool with you'

How many troops do you recommend for popping weak caps early? I find that 2-1 is very risky but 3-1 is usually safe.

In terms of a sandbox mode, it would be really cool if there also was a "randomizer" mode that could also affect the value of continents. I mean, +8 Australia anyone?
Maybe it's just the cynic in me but I find it weird that red and yellow seemed to only want to hit Pete and that when yellow saw Pete card blocking red he expended a massive amount of troops to break it for no personal profit.
Yellow hated what Pete was doing by then, Pete confused then annoyed him, plus he had blacks cap, which meant Pete had Russia, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Greece part ( South Eastern Europe maybe? - forgot name sorry).
Yellow had a god position, 3 caps, imagine Pete's surprise when he took Switzerland and went into France, to find another cap in there, and yellow had just one more entry point from Africa which also had a cap.
This was definitely a game of 2 strong positions, and yellow firmly knew who the real enemy was.
If you rewatch the video, you can clearly see if fron yellows point of view, if you turn Pete out and could see what yellow was seeing, yellow was playing to win, and had red cornered, he just used him like Pete tried to.
Whenever red tried yo combate yellow he came up against not one but 2 strong caps each time.

There was a point in the mid game where yellow was constantly breaking you but you were not actually breaking him back and just reclaiming your territory, which allowed him to snowball. At 35:34, was there a good reason not to break yellow? It feels like you were too nice to yellow.
Yes, Pete switched from territory to progressive card mode.
I was very surprised when Pete allowed yellow to get like 45 per turn, when cards were worth like 125 troops, that's like getting 2 sets of cards every 3 turns.
Yellow used that advantage clearly.

I think you should have attacked yellow white and red were occupying each other. You were the most powerful and as long as you didn't piss off the other two they would probably have been happy playing for second place.
They didn't seem happy to play for second as evidenced by repeatedly suiciding into me 🤣
Yes because at 30:45 you attacked them without provocation.
If you'd left them alone I doubt they would have attacked you, leaving you free to deal with the second strongest opponent, yellow.
Your way the best case scenario was you take them out and get their cards - but it was a big gamble which obviously didn't pay off.
Instead, as it was, you ended up fighting 3 opponenents simultaneously.
Furthermore, they werent playing for second place if you were attacking them.
They were playing for 3rd place since obviously yellow was being left alone.
