The trick to eating smørrebrød is actually getting a bit of everything in each bite. Trying it out by picking components to try individually, will sometimes give weird flavors. Most smørrebrød is made so the tastes compliment eachother.

Fun fact that even lots of danish people now a days obviously got wrong, it is not butter bread, but smeared bread - the danish word for; to smear is at smøre and the word butter is smør, the word smørrebrød is even got the double "R" this means that everybody should be able to see, that it originate from the word smerre/shmerre, meaning to spread/lubricate with fat ... and thats why some people got it wrong even lots ofdanes... and the meaning of "smeared" bread can also be seen in the meaning of being lubricated and thereby being easier to swallow ... other "lubricans" than butter being used when making smørrebrød could be tasty dripping fat from pork roast , duck roast etc. Herring e.g. is in old school most often served with the fat from the pork roast on the rye bread.

  • @JanBruunAndersen
    @JanBruunAndersen Před 5 měsíci +1

I wish all these videos showing Danish smørrebrød would show the day-to-day, plain version in addition to the fancy version (which we call "højt belagt" = "high coated").
The plain version consist of just 3-5 components:
    1. Rye bread (or white bread if you are a barbarian)
    2. Ready-spread "butter" (or real butter if you feel fancy)
    3. A main ingredient like a piece of cold-cut meat, liver paté, mackerel in tomato sauce, slices of a boiled potato / hardboiled egg / tomato / cucumber.
Or you use various mixes like
    - "Russian salad" = chopped redbeet mixed with mayonnaise
    - "Æg salad" = chopped egg mixed with mayonnaise, salt, and some curry powder
    4. Garnish, usually just 1-2 types, like remoulade or more mayonnaise, roasted onion (good with the sliced potatoes and tomatoes, but not mackerel), a sprinkle of herbs (chives, garden cress).
    5. A sprinkle of salt, grounded pepper, more curry.
When listed like that it begins to sound complicated, but in reality it is quite simple, low-key, and easily done. And you can indeed pick it up and eat it without the use of cutlery.
Where it differs from the complicated, "high coated" version is that you leave out the fancy fresh green leaves, you leave out the freshly cut onion rings, fresh grated horse radish, fish eggs, pickled capers seeds, lemon splice, etc. All these things piles up making it necessary to use a knife and fork.

    Hello Chloé and Ludvig.
I think it was a good and entertaining video you made about Copenhagen, and the selection of local food and beer. It is highly recommended that you both drink a small schnapps with beer if you eat fish, especially if it is herring. Regarding hot dogs, the Hanegal label is a guarantee for organic sausages. But I wouldn't recommend the red ones, they tend to be a bit tasteless , in my opinion. Kødbyen and Refshaleøen are also worth visiting if you want to eat. A very local dish called roast pork with parsley sauce and potatoes ( Stegt flæsk med persillesovs ) you pay a price per person, and then you can eat all you want - Can also be recommended together with a large glass of beer. The strawberry tart / pie is my favorite in the summer, when the strawberries are completely fresh. 😊

I am not Danish, but Greenlandic... but thank GOD you didn´t visit my country Greenland. We eat more fish and meat than the Danes..... I can tell you are most vegetarians. Why go to Denmark which is a fish and meat country? Smørrebrød is best when you don´t avoid the good roasted meat or any other things they put on their smørrebrød. Fish cakes and potatoes is not normal butnot rare, but there are so much other things to put on smørrebrød (open faced sandwiches). The Danish Hotdogs are not - what the Danes normally eat.... maybe after a night out or if they have forgotten their lunch for work. It is fatty and do not consist much real flesh.

Thanks Kim and Angel, funny thing is, we did actually go to Greenland! We’ll be posting our Greenland trip very shortly! And yes you’re correct - lots of meat and fish there which we didn’t try because we are mostly vegetarian. We absolutely love Denmark and the veggie alternatives for the classic Danish dishes are delicious! I think it’s great that we show options that vegetarians are able to try too without missing out on the flavours!

No sane Dane would prefer fiskefrikadeller (fish meat balls) over minced meat (calf and pork) meatballs. To do that you would have to go to a mental institution. I wonder why you did not try those meatballs? We have the same with minced meat from calfes. They are called "hakkebøf". Usually prepared with a fried egg on top. We also has "leverpostej" which is liver minced together with salt and peper. Usually covered with bacon. The bacon part makes everyone to love it. It is true we like shrimbs together with eggs and fried bacon. Yumi. It is also true that we like rye bread. Apart being super healthy is does comes in variants. The best rye bread for tourists are the nutty ones. Not the crazy ones but bread that makes you feel you are eating nuts. I think you need to revistet Denmark

I am Danish and I think you missed out on Danish food. Sorry, but don't ask Swedish people to guide you in Denmark. Our cuisine is so much better than whatever they serve in Sweden. Sweden only has one plus. Mashed potatoes and the hot dog stand, if they still have that?

None of the first three dishes were Danish, and like you pointed out yourself, The Creme Brulee wasn`t either. Fish and Chips........not Danish either.......and you ARE allowed to take pictures in Christiania, just not in Pusher street for obvious reasons, but you can take photos pretty much everywhere else in Christiania. Then you had Crepes........not Danish either..............then you went to an italian Restaurant.........I`m not even gonna comment ( since you did yourself ). Finally you got to the real Danish food, Pølser, Smørrebrpd, Kanelsnegle, and Beer, and despite my " Pedantic Sarcasm ", I still enjoyed your video a lot.......💋

Most of the food you eat in this video isn't Danish... In fact - only a few things are actually traditionally Danish...... and that selection at the hotdog stand - is SERIOUSLY all wrong! Oh and BTW - most Danes would consider a tofu hotdog blasphemy! LOL - like seriously WTF! We are mostly kinda hard to offend - and I'm particularly so - but a little voice inside me just went "She is rating Danish food on a scale - and she went for a freaking Japanese fusion version - LIVID!" LOL... Also those sausages looked pretty low quality to most we have here - and was that a wholegrain pølsebrød? WTF? Pølsebrød should be soft and squishy - and not eaten to load up on fiber!
Oh and BTW - Smørrebrød - where was the pickled herring with currysauce and onions? Where was the dyrelægens natmad? where was the roast beef with horseradish, remoulade and roasted onions? where was the rullepølse med Italiensk salat? Where was the eggs with mayo, shrimp and "caviar"? Where was the frikadelle with rødkål?
Also where was the most traditional Danish dinner dish with flæskesteg (pork roast with crackling), kartofler, brun sovs, rødkål, asier, and menu chips/franske kartofler?
Also also - missing Danish deserts, Danish cheeses, Danish snacks, Danish sandwiches (Flæskesteg/frikadelle med rødkål)?
I could keep going here - but the point is: This was a REALLY poor representation of Danish food! Like actually not even close - and by far the worst example I've seen in these kinda videos. Usually people get details wrong - you literally weren't even in the right category most of the time - and when you were it was in the "sorta close but not really" range. The pastry was pretty Danish - and the beer - and that was just about it for stuff you could really consider "Danish"... oh yeah and the fiske frikadelle - though they are mostly enjoyed hot with potatoes and a 3 different sauces depending on preference: Remoulade sovs (basically a heated tartar sauce), persille sovs, or citron sovs... You can also have hollandaise - however that's not really Danish 😀
