    I have so many memories between that mall and Newmarket Fair.
    Now I'm about 40 miles away, and I have developed the same fondness for Greenbrier Mall, hope that Mall doesn't become a dead Mall.

    Coliseum Mall in the 90's and early 2k?!
    Shiiiid that was the spot. One side of the mall had established stores while the food court side had fashion shows, dance competitions and music that kept up with the times. With black owned stores, art, clothing. Had to stop and get a flavored chew stick! No question. The smell of Cinnabon while getting a free Chick fil A sample. Mane, you don't know the half. Traffic was bad though and you could definitely catch a beat down in a wing or sub-wing of the Mall. SEEN PLENTY...

    The last piece of Coliseum Mall that was torn down was the Thalhimer's/Hecht's/Macy's, which came down after it was shuttered in the mid 2010s large-scale Macy's closures.
    Peninsula Town Center is a sprawling complex with an intent to bring upscale shopping to that part of Hampton. It opened right around the time I graduated from CNU.

    I really enjoyed the video. I have fond memories of this place. I never knew it opened in two stages, I remember it in the 80s as a teen, and somewhat in the 70s from trips with my family. Rice's Nachman's, Smith and Welton, and, of course, our most beloved Thalhimers are forever imprinted in my mind. I'm a generation X lost soul. I remember the brown and amber floor tiles. It feels tragic thinking about the demolishion of the original structure. What a waste. An environmental catastrophe. I'm rambling, but the 80s Coliseum Mall was a cool place to be. Does anybody else remember Merry go Round or DJ's? I loved 80s clothes : )

    • @lord_erdrick
      @lord_erdrick Před 3 měsíci

      Sometime in the 80's or early 90's, a motorcyclist drove off it and was killed. Unfortunately, I don't recall exactly when. From what I remember, that structure, very few used, was also the primarily cause of traffic woes. It is a shame, however, Google Maps couldn't had captured the flyover and mall before demolition. Oh, well.

    Don't ever recall Coliseum Mall as "dead" or "abandoned" or necessarily "unsafe." I always understood it as the mall was "aging" and Hampton wanted to emulate Newport News' Oyster Point and the small towne center feel. Compared to Newmarket North, which had been dead since the early 90's, Coliseum was older and doing relatively well, at least from this shopper's viewpoint.

    I was in there during its dying days with Burlington, JC Penney and Macy's as the anchors before it got torn down in 2007. It was very hollow during my final trip in 2006. Months after the demo, I started working at outback steakhouse for nearly two years nearby. I make a fair amount of trips to Peninsula Town Center since that opened in 2010. Before the area was in decline aside from Target and Walmart (and that's THE ghetto Walmart in the area) for sometime. When I moved to Newport News in 2000, I would sometimes get to Coliseum mall and this is shortly before some chains went under or simply bounced.

      My last trip (s) was in an Fye that year, when I bought Uncut tapes
      To Dbz History of Trunks, and the Last Kid Buu & Super 17 tapes.
      Now I wish I had taken advantage of other store sales.
      Maybe Spencers and Hot Topic had some fire sales, on Shirts, Bookbags, Wallets, Key Lanyards, etc .
      At least we still have Patrick Henry Mall 😔

Had my first date with Tiffany Johnson Christmas of 97...my first tounge kiss that night sitting at a table at the food court...... brought my first Super soaker from Spencers in 92.... my first Tommy Hilfiger shirt from PROFITS.....before it was dillards and then on to become Macy's.....Hanging out at the Arcade when Mortal kombat first dropped, everyone fighting to get next so that they can pull of a fatality in front of a crowd of mesmerized people who'd never seen a game like that....the 90s Coliseum Mall!!!! And oh yeah, "the sneaker shit"...... peeking down at someone's feet to see who had on the latest 100 dollar sneakers....

    I remember when last moments of coliseum mall I was in middle I went to Eaton (the middle school around the corner from the mall) and walked there everyday after school they started to tear down the mall when I was 6th grade and it was completely gone by my freshman year of High school… Coliseum mall was known to be the “black mall” and Patrick Henry was the “white mall” it was a little ghetto but not crimes filled as the city claim it was… honestly Hampton biggest mistake was to tear down that mall because peninsula town center was always stupid concept and the city is paying for it nothing ever last in that mall but big stores and it’s more crime filled than coliseum mall
