When Bill Gates visited Wired in 1996 the editors interviewed him. I don't think we ever did anything with the interview. I had completely forgotten I had video'ed it.
He knew where Microsoft would be all along regardless of the monetary projections, and he knew that Microsoft would be a tools and infrastructure provider instead of a content aggregator and provider. Maybe he thought about this interview long after it was done and reformulated Microsoft's strategy when Bing was created and even when launching Azure. He evolved while knowing about Microsoft's core strengths. All things considered I think it was a million times better to face Bill Gates and argue with him than talk with Steve Jobs even about the most trivial details. Jobs always looked like he thought he was above everybody else and was about to bite people's heads off.

Bill was more passionate about home entertainment industry and Microsoft's investment into Xbox than he was about Microsoft's investment into Windows Mobile.

They are now both multi trillion dollar companies.
