- What are racing lines and how do they make you faster? Why is the racing line not as simple as the shortest, fastest or easiest path through a turn? What is the karting line? What does it mean to take a late apex? Let's explore!

I can feel both that
1. This is really oversimplified.
2. Adding any more complexity would have gone way over my head.
Great balance.
And then there's me, who didn't understand anything. Feels bad man
@@ballinbalgruuf8198 lol
How can you not understand that this is the fastest way to take a corner lmao
I’m not sure how this could be simpler
It’s basic physics dude. The whole concept is extremely simple
Him: you'll go faster if you take a late apex
Me: *cuts corner*
Stewards: 50 year ban for dropping tire !!!!!!!!!
Underrated
Really you go faster through the corner, but just not the exit
How are you fast in a corner if you don’t take one?
5 seconds penalty.
6:20. Yeah, I hate it when I have humans for curbs. They always disrupt my grip when I hit them.
Underrated comment! xD
I'm guessing you drive a mustang 😂😂😂
It's the new barrier design. Turns out human bodies are excellent at absorbing impact hits. They're only single use though...
not to mention, the slippery intestines

I'm a racing driver and an instructor myself and this is very accurate, nicely explained and illustrated. Good stuff.
Racing lines: its better to take this approach at a corner
Me: ummmm why not just drift it conserves all your speed if your good enough at it so no need to brake and loss speed
@@nothingrealy905 If I was to take the question seriously - it's because when drifting, your grip is considerably lower so your speed trough the corner is much lower than what's possible otherwise.
"Braking and losing speed" is done from the much higher speed on the straight down to the speed that you need to take the corner, which is still higher than what you would have if drifting.
Drifting is a perfectly valid way to have fun, but it's not fast

But he didn't explain why carts have this difference from F1 cars
@@janhetjoch The explanation gave was wrong anyway. The 'karting' line (as I know it) refers to a line taken in the wet where you try to keep off the rubbered-in parts of the track. Thats all.
@@TeifiValley123 Thats... what he said
@@IStMl He explained that karts travel better when keeping momentum because they are naturally 'slidey and unstable'. Thats the part i was picking out. Not that it matters.
@@TeifiValley123 so karts don't travel better when keeping momentum? Are they not naturally slidey and unstable? Genuinely asking.
THIS! Many people don't realise that "the exit speed" is one of the most important aspects for being the fastest on a race track!
Everyone realises. This is literally driving for half-wits.
Driving for Forza gamers
odin lindeberg Better yet, GTA racers. Like myself lmao
Exit speed depends of corner speed. With late apex you have much more low corner speed then exit speed after corner. With late apex you will always spend more lap time than with neutral apex and trail braking.
weighted averaging can probably be used to quantify the importance of exist speed for a turn. also though there is probably a theoretical minimum time strategy for any course, you don't necessarily need that, or even want it, you want the maximum time strategy which is the lowest time of all parties in the race, thus minimizing stresses on the car and tires.
When I was still kid. I ask my dad
"Why those car turning like that?"

I always thought i understood cornering pretty well, but now i see that i have been ignorant and i think i just found out why im so terrible at F1 games especially in the wet. It feels like this just gave me the one thing i need to improve enough to up my difficulty from 95 to 110 on F1 2017. Time to go practice some.
Thanks so much! ^_^

Cpu?? CPU is a processor for a computer, it stands for: core processing unit.
AI or bots is what you would call them
@@niiphox93 who cares
@@niiphox93 yes, in technology/hardware. hes talking about videogames
It's a perfectly acceptable term and, I thought, widely known. Though perhaps a bit old fashioned now. The AI players were usually called CPU1/CPU2 etc by default in lots of older games. Particularly on the 16/32 bit consoles and in many DOS and early windows games.
Been watching your videos for a few weeks now. They're so professional, you'll have 100k by end of the year, no question.

Neeta go back and check his older videos and tell your friends! This is my favorite racing content online, other than racing of course...
I love your videos! This mini-series has taught me a lot of new things and things that we normally don't think about too much or take for granted. Can/will you/are you planning to do a video on the different types of overtakes and their mechanics? For example, how does a switch-back move work when the lead car has a better line and so on.
I honestly think this is one of your best ever videos. The detail, the complexity, the stitching together of ideas, the animation - everything works together brilliantly. One of the videos that really cleared up the idea of racing lines for me and made F1 much more interesting!
So... The best race car drivers in the world are also top mathematicians....?
It's helpful.
Top racecar drivers have an engineer in their ear telling the driver of any conditions ahead of them on the race course
That is very interesting question, nobody dares ask apparently?? Can bunch of math and software find optimum curve through course? Then top racecar driver is the best driver at driving that line, note, knowing the optimal path isn't necessary the same as driving the optimal path.
I don't know myself, but i think this is done in f1 driving. It's complex but I bet team's do use computers and 3d model of track and solve for an optimal time, given mathematical model's of cars turnign, breaking, accelerating capabilities. Then it's a matter of getting a driver who can best follow the results here. Also dealing with competition may be too dynamic to benefit from this. So that plays a role.
Also indy car is different too, usually F1 drivers do very well in indy car and I think in indy, they don't do this as much and just let the driver figure it out. But then Indy car drivers do follow some interesting practices, like coming off the wall on straits as apparently air pressure is higher over there on brickyard?
I'm always amazed of how much I learn about a so simple seeming topic
Your videos are getting better and better I love it!!!!
1:23 So that's what the UBISOFT logo means.

This channel's videos deserve to be on trending #1. Best in the business I say. Please keep making such videos, cuz you're the best.
Absolutely brilliant!! Can you please make a video on the control and stability of an F1 car, from a vehicle dynamics point of view. Effects of setup choices on aerodynamic grip and mechanical grip vs tire degradation. That would be amazing.

I feel so smart lol! ‘Tell you why! I turned my autopilot on at 30mph on a one-way road with a lot of curves (40mph speed limit), and wanted to prove that I was gonna be able to catch the car in front just by taking racing lines before the road ended! The road is about 4 miles long; YES, it worked! I know there are a lot of variables like the speed of the car in front and all of that, but I’ve tried it a couple of times more and still catch the car in front! I love cars!... and science! :)

Always do the math in my head but its good to see a detailed analysis. Takes me a good 10 mins of track time to remember the racing line of the track, and an hour of track time to figure out where whatever motor I'm in performs best. I switch between a Porsche GT3, Evo IX, and Honda CBR. The three couldn't be more different in corner attack techniques.
These videos are getting me excited about F1 in a way I haven't been in years ❤️
So...you're saying I'll never be a race driver, as racing lines are just too complicated?
Jokes apart, thank you for this amazing video.
You're the best CZcamsr Chain Bear,
Hey, I have a question, what software do you use to make your videos? I ask this question because I need to make a video for History class, and I would like to use your software. It so cool. I am a subscriber for over 2 months now and your videos continue to fascinate me. Your videos are the best and explain the best how things work.
It does not matter if you don't want me to use the software, I won't take it personally. I still will love your CZcams channel and it's content.

Thank you so much Chain Bear. I really appreciate it. I will try to use Blender. Photoshop is too expensive so I won't try that. However, I will think about Adobe After Effects since it is also expensive. Thank you so much again for the reply.

4:45 new to learning about racing and this was the main point that stuck out to me. Learning which corners to take speed through.
Wow I did not realize racing was so complex! Can't wait to explore this channel more!
I really want to know why is there such a big difference between an ideal Quali car setup and an ideal Race car setup. How does that fuel weight effect a nicely balanced "empty" car
rolling resistance of tires depends on condition of road, diameter and pressure of tyre, speed and mass of the vehicle, and other things as well.
In qualifying, you can get away with a more unstable car because you only need to handle it for a lap; if you slide around a bit while the car twitches through a corner, that's ok... But over the course of a full race, you may not want to abuse the tires as much, and the driver may not feel as confident with the car over the race or stint length, and it may actually be quicker to have a slightly slower but more stable car; what is the point of having a car that can be potentially 0.5 sec quicker, but the driver only feels comfortable driving it 1 sec off its ultimate limit? Better to have that car that the driver can trust for the whole race, and be 0.5 slower than the others potential, but 0.5 quicker than what the driver can accomplish over a full race.
I'm gonna study physics so I can trash my friends at Mariokart
Your videos should get so much more publicity. There are so many people out there who think motorsport is just "driving in circles" that takes no skill.
Well done with explaining the basics as well as the more sophisticated concepts!
I love how he spent a few mins explaining why the circle is the fastest turn then proceeds to say "nah taking the circle line is useless in the real world" 😂😂😂 such informative vids, this channel made me love f1 even more
Im a trackmania player and this helped me making more precise moves and turns
Thanks for the great explanation. I for once thaugt the geometric line is allways better unless thers is a corner after the one you are takeing. Showing the cause and effect of how you take a corner is basicly giving the tools to deside for yourself how to take every corner correctly. Loved the video!
Very nice!! Finally someone that understands the concept of the exit being the most important aspect to a great line (whether it's to maximize acceleration or position or both), as compared to taking the mathematical perfect apex. One other little bit to also add to take into consideration is distance traveled as well. For example, the part you go over around 4:10, I'd personally still late break the entry corner as it would allow for the smoothest transition into the next segment, and reducing overall distance traveled. Where as an early apex would require the line you showed, resulting in overall more distance to travel to setup for the next corner (the squiggly bit). And of course as you mention, it all goes bollocks to sideways in real life :) Great vid!!!!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I LOVE your graphic animations! Are all the graphics and animations originals, made by you?
TheMack 100% of course :)
