The most important gear when moving slowly or in tight spaces is neutral. Novices tend to go back and forth from forward to reverse and end up over correcting and get themselves into trouble and often panic. Small corrections using neutral and lining up correctly is the way to go.
Yes he didn’t look back once the whole time. I kept going backwards in short bursts while trying to keep straight. It’s a real bottle neck there once an issue happens.
You're right there! was saying the same thing the other day. What bugs me most is when elderly people are on the deck folding back their canopy for example and a hire boat will scream past at full pelt! The backwash created then puts them in danger. Obviously getting to Great Yarmouth in 2 hours is more important to them!
@@ItsLaterThanYouThink Around here most rental boats are not allowed to use tidal waters with strong currents, so these boats are usually underpowered. It's the privately owned semi-planing cabin cruisers that create big waves. Anyway, the result is the same... everything that isn't bolted down flies around. Mind you, sensible owners slow down before they overtake us. Have a nice day !
Hi mate. Please don’t worry! This is a bad example and this is one of the worst choke points on the broads. I hit this bridge either very early or in the early evening. When it’s on full flow at peak time it gets quite entertaining there so I avoid it. I’ve made a mess of going under here once or twice. But don’t fear because fear is the mind killer. You have a fantastic trip 🤙🏼
Hi Janet, from what I noticed he hit the side and tried to put too much acceleration on. He then started to panic and lost it. Unless there was an issue swapping the drive over from lower deck to upper deck.
I think they have only just took over the Hire from the Boat Yard. So many people expect the Boat to behave like a Car and respond immediately to the Steering but then get themselves in a right pickle when they overcompensate and then under-compensate,they don’t seem to be able to fathom how gunning it doesn’t help either !. I think we have all been there when we first started and all of a sudden it just clicks. Poor sod, I bet he was embarrassed and flustered Lol 😂
Erm....... it doesn't bode well for the rest of their holiday. Just as well you have the sense to back away as there's not a lot of looking while going astern. Did they make it in the end?
Yeah I think they made it. I had to put camera down but they did a 3 point turn on the river and went to moor up before the bridge. Chaos was starting to build from everyone stood still on both sides.
@@ItsLaterThanYouThink I did hit the side at ludham years ago but the steering was doing strange things, not that I’m blaming that, but I carried on through not like that twonk
Hi Colin, I'm wondering if the drive selector for driving upper deck or lower deck was playing up for him. I hate going through Ludham Bridge and as soon as you get something like this the whole flow breaks for the worse :-)
@@ItsLaterThanYouThink yes,I was not very sympathetic towards the helmsman, there must have been a problem somewhere,we did the broads many years ago and I remember that bridge as well as one at Potter Higham ?
@@colinmiller5502 Yeah Potter Heigham bridge that's the one. My next video I'm there. The boat won't go under that one so end of navigation for me right there.
I can guess what he did, he decided at the last minute not to sit on the top and try and move the controls down below and it failed to connect so no helm control, bit of a dick thing to do

I am always amazed hoe few hire boat crew look behind when in reverse. You see it all the time when they are mooring.

That guy was struggling . He could have gotten through if he’d held his nerve.
Ohh this was painfully to watch......🤣
dont think it fits sideways
Check the tide table and note the height of your boat. low water here essential for larger cruisers.. Tide markers are clearly visible.
some boat hirers do an excellent job, some cause chaos and hilarity. This one clearly fits in the latter category.

Hell's Bells !
Strong currents at that bridge
When I had my own boat I used to dread Ludham Bridge.
Yeah I dread it too Dave. Go really late or really early now to get through. It's a magnet for problems.
we had that boat about 2 year ago , we never had any problems getting it through , i did'nt understand what their problem was .
Inexperience, strong wind , tidel flow glad you are an expert
@@grahamjordan1040 look at the trees hardly any wind , water looks calm, and he was halfway through to begin with ...dont need to be an expert!
I just assumed that he was reversing through from the other side.😂
@@philipowen3370 I know! He wants to visit Reedham or St Olaves if he thinks that tide runs fast.
I hate coming up to ludham bridge from the other direction, you can't see if anything is coming the other way until you're lined up 😂
You’re right Dave. I usually go through really early to avoid the madness. Just feels like trouble every time you get there!
im going on my first broads trip in July. Literally dreading doing stuff like this. LOL.

They should never have been allowed out of the boatyard he hasn't got a clue ....
And you were born a boat handler not
What was going on - they had enough headroom to get through?
Hi Janet, from what I noticed he hit the side and tried to put too much acceleration on. He then started to panic and lost it. Unless there was an issue swapping the drive over from lower deck to upper deck.
I don’t understand what I’m seeing. Why is it so hard to drive the boat under the bridge? Currents? I’m intrigued!
Why is it so hard to understand? You’re seeing stupidity.

Christ... give the keys back
Short bursts ahead is what's needed here. ..
Deffo. I think it was one of those moments where the adrenaline was making bad choices so it went to a bad place. We’ve all been there I suppose.
Was there strong wind or something blowing it off course?
No not at all Robert. Don’t know what was going on to be honest.
My least favorite bit of the broads - i hit the side once and the other half wont let me forget it! This tho- he was half way through!
Hey Snorty! Yeah I’ve hit it too. I’m not so keen on this part either. I now plan in advance every time. I hit it very early now.
I think it was brain malfunction looks like he was in neutral to start with
Best they stay well away from breydon water. Lol 😂
The look on the dogs face thinking WTF is going on there…
You’re right. He seemed to know before us 🤣
Sorry but I’d be shouting get thisen through it ya great wazzock
