Man overboard at Ludham Bridge!

  • It’s turning out that Saturday evening’s are becoming my favourite time to film. This evening was particularly busy, we struggled to find a place to moor in the early afternoon. Then came the procession of Richardson’s boat looking to moor for the night. As my title says a chap fell in the river whilst mooring. I would never normally post that on my channel but the chap that fell wanted me to show this to you all. Safety first when mooring up, slow and steady and always wear your life jacket. I hope you enjoy today’s video.

Glad that the gentleman was not seriously hurt , a cautionary tale indeed , as a boater myself can I please urge all hirers and privateers to use their life savers when afloat and if the worse happens and you do fall in never approach the back of a boat when the engine is still running , a spinning prop is lethal !!!

Thanks Sean! The boat was reversing but a passing boat shouted turn your engine off. But yes things can turn sour so easily.

I was going to comment on boat handling when you have someone in the water. It's something that hire companies don't teach hirers

Totally agree. A friend of mine lost a leg when a boat going astern sucked her into the prop’. It was only the quick thinking of another diver that saved her life.

I have to say whilst sitting here watching your videos every week, I feel as if I am mentally making a list of potential risks boaters put themselves under. I am glad the gentleman who fell was alright. I hope he enjoyed his holiday regardless and the rest of his week was not so eventful. Please everyone out on boats just wear your life jackets. They are there for a reason. Rant over. Great footage as always and How Hill looked beautiful.

Brilliant as always, my how these rental companies need to do more for first time boaters. Some very simple safety tips and a little mooring advice would go a long way.

Couldn't agree more but then it’s down to the individual…..

The trouble is, even the RYA “basic” Powerboat course is a two day course, that would be too much for a new boater to do out of their holiday and it’s not a legal requirement even going to sea.

We were here last week. Hired a 44ft cruiser and took it through Ludham bridge 4 times without any issues... not sure how so many people get stuck like this trying to take their boats through it sideways! Sadly, we didn't see you on the way through, though 😢 thanks for the videos!

Thanks Mikey. Contrary to gossip and hearsay I’m only there once a week. Hopefully next time!

Can’t wait to be on the boat again this week hopefully no one will go in. Last week I helped a lady that feel off a boat she leaped from hurting her leg. She was bruised thankfully not to bad.

WOW , what a busy day , weather looked lovely too , i know what it's like falling in , i fell in at barnes yard a few years ago , trying to pull a boat in at the side of us , but for some reason it just would'nt budge , it would only come halfway in , so i tried to pull them rest of the way & slipped in , & it was alot deeper than i thought , about 6ft deep & cold too , & it was quite frightening .

Good For you m8, And respect for asking the chap if he was ok with you showing his slip up. I have spent the last 50 years on the broads, and the wooden sidings can get very very slippy, and mossy with very little rain, at least he did no major damage good for him.

Hi Jonny, the weather over there looks wonderful! It’s early morning and about five degrees here, cold in the morning but fine going up to about eighteen degrees during the day. I sound like a Pom discussing the weather all the time! Lol 😢 Thank you for another great video. The fellow falling in the drink was a bit of a worry. I am pleased that he was not badly hurt and hope that they enjoy the rest of their holiday. Have a good week from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺

Yes phew he was ok! As we are entering in to ‘summer’ here, you have winter! It rained most of the day today but it didn’t stopped me filming, we’ve had just over a week of fab weather so that’s it lol. All the best from the Broads

Another bit of advice you could give would be to lay off the lager when you're on the water, I've witnessed a couple of those kinds of mooring accidents, one of which required hospitalization, sad way to end your holiday.

Sadly most don't realise how danergous playing around on boats can be, and sadder still is the fact that many don't seem to pick up how to handle a boat very quickly at all.......the buggering about with dogs shd have been done waaay before the bridge, maybe the boat that was returning to the yard had issues - as i can't believe it needed thrusters to be continually used to steer the thing and finally - 'wet man'; the back of some of those boats does entice trying to get on/off from there, but frankly that's bloody dangerous (use the sides), worse - unless it was a diff engine we could hear, seems the driver didn't kill the engine straightaway; biggest lessons folks shd figure out: wear the lifejackets, do everything slower than the speed which you thought was ok, never 'jump' off a boat, remember a boat has a pivot point - it skates around that (unlike a car which has 4 tyres with friction) - and stop the frigging engine/get it into neutral soon as there's someone in the water.

I get sick of telling mainly hirers not to jump to the banks, little bit of damp or rain and it's as slippery as hell, seen far to many near misses over the years,

Ignoring the falling in, send your video section from 7:30mins to 10:00mins to the BA and the hire boat company, clearly the hirers are having problems switching between the dual helms, this is how a death occurred at Great Yarmouth. The hire fleets were supposed to have improved their handover instructions. Had this of happened at Yarmouth or a part of the Broads with strong tides, could lead to another disaster, do not leave this video unseen by the relevant authorities.
