  • In this video, I'd like to address another question about medications that I received. This one was in regards to tramadol. The questioner wanted to know if tramadol was safe to take and was it a good pain medication for lower back pain? Tramadol is an interesting medication and we are going to talk about what it is, who and how to safely use it, and if you should use it.
    0:00 Introduction
0:41 What is Tramadol and What are the Side Effects?

Tramadol is indicated for moderate to severe pain. Because tramadol is a synthetic opiate or opiate agonist, it has all the same potential side effects and problems as other, stronger opiates such as Vicodin, Percocet and Oxycontin. Tramadol can cause dizziness, headache, constipation, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and sweating. You can become physically and mentally dependent on tramadol. You shouldn't generally take tramadol if you are taking other serotonin medications such as anti-depressants.
For my own prescribing, I can say that I hardly ever prescribe narcotic medications except for tramadol. Tramadol is my go to medication when there is serious, severe pain that we need to control for a few days or even weeks while we get a handle on the underlying problem. I haven't personally seen addiction or abuse issues, at least not to my knowledge, but it definitely always carries that risk and as such all of its risks as well as its potential benefits need to be fully discussed with your doctor.

Pre-shoulder replacement surgery my pain was intolerable, yet the highly regulated pain medication was only prescribed post surgery. My doctor finally prescribed Tramadol for me to use until I had surgery. Tramadol was a life saver for me.

I've taken lots of opioids in my time and there is definitely nothing 'lite' or 'less' about Trams, especially in the feeling of euphoria it can give you. I say " can give you" because some people I know get no euphoric effects at all. When I was first prescribed them it was after years and years of abusing Dihydrocodeine but they never came even close to Trams for the feelings of pure joy and a complete removal of my social phobias. But after years of taking Tramadol there was a day when all of those good feelings very suddenly and permanently disappeared and since then I only notice them doing anything if I have gone a few days without them. In my opinion those early Tramadol were much more worthy of the name 'Ecstasy' than MDMA ever will be. They are also hell to stop using.

Research done stated that is because its irreversible damage done to the cortisol level where it gets way to high when the substance is removed.
Therefor many people must be medicated with substitut substances like subutex and its for life of unlucky.
It shows that already after 2 weeks of normal dosage medicated by specialist can get that outcome

I’m in the middle of second round of lumbar spine stenosis, scoliosis, L-1,2,3,4 disc bulge, facet joint disease, and forminal narrowing. Plus moderately severe arthritis in lumbar spine. My first round of pain management occurred in 2019. Due to the Covid situation, I couldn’t have regular appointments with pain management, and just lived with the problems. Earlier this year, I had another MRI that showed increased lumbar damage. Back to lumbar injections, radio frequency ablation and epidural lumbar injections due to bilateral sciatica and increased pain. I’ve been prescribed tramadol couple of time, and it simply has no effect on me. My primary care doc has sent in a referral for a spine specialist visit, but that hasn’t occurred yet. I don’t get any relief from tramadol. Other than occasional NSAIDs, there’s nothing I can take to relieve the constant pain. Plus, asking for pain medications It’s a waste of time since the government decided it knew better than the doctors, and prevents them from prescribing, so I stopped asking. But tramadol isn’t something useful for this type of pain with me.

yeah same boat got back issues saw pain management specialist put me on these because the buprenorphine patches were giving me massive anxiety issues and breathing problems and what a big mistake it was no pain relief at all just constipation it doesn't work for a small amount of people were the odd ones out. eddit: also couldn't sleep that's the only 2 things that I got from tramadol constipation and no sleep I was on 100mg

So you say Tramadol shouldn’t be taken with Anti-D’s?? My Dr switched me to tramadol to help with post operative pain after my 9th op on my right wrist which included a Motec wrist replacement and ulnar head replacement, I had this done 31st October last year and it’s still extremely weak and can be quite painful. Now I also take 45mg Mirtazapine, 200mg Sertraline & 160mg of propranolol for severe anxiety issues, I also take 50mg Liothyronine + 100mg Levothyroxine for Hashimoto’s, Mirbeverine for IBS. I use the 50mg tramadol twice a day as well as 500mg Naproxin twice a day. Is using the Tramadol alongside the Mirtazapine & Sertraline NOT a good idea?? I must admit I have been feeling very sluggish, energy zapped etc for a while now, could the tramadol etc have something to do with it??

I was on a anitidepressant Lexapro. I believe it interacted with tramadol. My doc did a pharmacogenetic testing and the results came back that I should not be taking a antidepressant with Tramadol as tramadol has antidepressant properties. I noticed a 'block' in my forehead and it was hard to get off Lexapro, however I paid for Ketamine depression therapy and with one dose of the Ketamine, that 'block' on my forehead (or third eye) went away!
