- A photo collage of events in Chris McCandless' life mixed to an acoustic song I composed and dedicated to the ideals and values he embodied.
Although I've never met the man, I've been deeply touched by his spirit.
Mp3 of the acoustic composition I created available at: etienne.lebel.googlepages.com/...
Upon popular request, I have tabbed the guitar part of the song I composed and made my tab available here:

The type of people who criticize him are most likely the exact type of people he didn't want to become.
The people who criticize him probably never read the book. If they did, they would understand that the whole point of his story was not about survival in Alaska, but about leaving behind society and appreciating life by living it to his belief.
JimmyGuitarist I agree with you
What kind of people would criticize him? That'll have to be the worst most stupidest thing I've heard in a while. One something crazy pops up, people find a way to put it at the worst perspective.
Well not being realistic and naively believing I can make it by just using my witts only to die of slow suffering starvation is definitely what I don't want to end up doing.
Collins Ongaya totally agree with you. He could have had his adventure with atleast proper equipment and a MAP!
happiness only real when shared
+Uomo_Nel_Mirino Billy Dee to Tracey... Ms. Ross. So true!
But in this context, Chris did share *it*...with ALL of US.
This is what I found interesting. I loved the movie, but that final quote... I don't know. I think that one individual can be happy, and that happiness is as real as the one shared. Maybe I musn't take his words so literally.
Ofcourse you can be happy alone, as an individual, but it means that you will get lonely over time. Did you watch the movie? After a while he doesn't enjoy being all alone anymore because he gets lonely. In case you did not watch it, I found a link to the full movie :o I was so happy! xmovies8.org/watch?v=Into_the_Wild_2007#video=Y_PSPEcy8WGezf8rG75V8qnDttd7APQJ4vNInjfRwq4
Yes I did. Great movie! Loved it
MORREU SOZINHO PRA APRENDER ISSO!! se tivesse aprendido antes n saia largando todo mundo...
I respect Chris McCandless for what he did and the choices he made in life. He felt a deep sense of alienation, betrayal, and loneliness. He did what he did in order to find out more about himself and what he wanted out of life. And he did all of this in a time when there were no smart phones, no Facebook, no blogs for attention seeking narcissists seeking to get a book deal. Ultimately, Chris found out that no man is an island, and may very well have been thinking of reconnecting with his family, but tragically, it came at a heavy price. So I will always respect Chris, what he did, and what he stood for. Today's self centered, wanna be viral famous, and narcissistic society would never understand that.
exactly
kobzster06 🙌🏼
so true I love chris for the same reason what he did took immense courage nobody has the right to spit on him unless they do it also
You forget the fact that he abandoned his family who worried about him for years! His ideals are respectable but that doesn’t excuse the stress/hurt he left them with.
I think his sisters book from 2014 goes a bit more into why he turned his back on his parents. I've not read the book, but apparently she understood and supported his motives completely so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. You cannot choose your family, but you can choose to leave them, and sometimes that is the right course of action for your own health.
To call him immature is totally wrong , he was hurt and damaged from his childhood memories. He was brave , young , naive and battling mother nature.
he wasn't immature! He was braver than all of us!
What is brave exactly about being stubborn, thinking you're better than you actually are (he was unprepared for his last battle but thought he could handle it) and leaving your loved ones in agony and pain for years of uncertainty? Thanks for your answer.
JVas21 Maybe taking a risk instead of being afraid of trying and afraid his whole life. He was probably bored and tired of society too. It's bad without equipment but he wanted to do everything himself. He didn't have a map because the guy wanted to discover a new place someone hasn't been to before him.
Everyone has different interpretations of his actions, and from what i've seen about him it's hard to figure out whether he was brave or arrogant. Most likely a bit of both, but he definitely was brave enough to live by his thoughts. To believe that living in society stripped him of the rough characterizing natural way people should live, then actually giving away $24,000 and going off to live on his own? That's something so few people have the will to do. That's what made him so inspiring and intriguing to the thousands (millions?) of people that make up his following.

“Happiness is only real when shared.”
-Christopher Johnson McCandless
This is one of my favourite quotes too but it is Leo Tolstoy who said it.
It's weird how people sitting in the comforts of their home are judging this guy who refused to live the materialistic life that he could have lived.... He dared...
"and cost him his life", critics would say
What is that exactly? What would have been better? Him living the life society expected of him and dying at 90 years old never taking the leap? Or dying at 24 (or whatever it was) and writing just before he died "maybe if I were running into your arms, you would see what I see now". He saw something before he died.
”A man who understands the Tao in the morning can die contentedly in the evening. “ If you have ever lived one complete moment, you can be ready to die. You can say, ”Well, that was it, that was the good-I've had it.” -Confucious
@@coultonharmon2266 super words brother !!
The society won't understand these words .
Its just words for them.
@@coultonharmon2266 what bullshit. He starved to death and was delirious. He didn't go out in this romantic way you think. He starved to death painfully and slowly due to his arrogance and naivety. He is a warning. Not an inspiration.
@@Vrais23 I hope your life gets better soon ❤️
@@corn2214 my life is fine. Thanks.
The movie adaptation made me question my whole existence.
Ikr. It's so hauntingly beautiful
I love the fact that on EVERY photo he is smiling and looks like he's really enjoying himself :D
Even though he is weak, he is smiling.... Even on his last photograph he took of himself he is smiling and waving to the camera :)
Chris, RIP, you are a true legend, lets hope that your passion spirit will live on !
Wow. That must have been hard to take that last photo and pen the farewell note, the overwhelming emotion of it, the finality of knowing he wouldn't see civilisation again, his friends, his sister, wouldn't travel to a new town, wouldn't write his book of his travels - can't imagine! Christopher Johnson McCandless, bless him. What courage. He died doing what he wanted to do, what he was passionate about. That's more than can be said for a lot of people.
only way to say it he was a great man
made a mistake we are all human no reason to hate him for it that being directed at his haters
♥
He's actually proved something that I've always suspected: fun and maturity are incompatible.
Hard to believe it's been 20 years since Chris went into the wild. One of my favorite quotes from Chris is, "...there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon..." never stop adventuring
I'm sorry, it appears as though no one that is commenting has actually read the book or done any research on this guy whatsoever. He had noble ideals, but the fact of the matter is that he left his family to agonize and worry over whether he was dead or not for two years. What he did was admirable, but in the end he came to the realization that happiness is only real when shared. In other words, he wanted to go back to society. The point is not to worship him, but to learn from him.
Excellent comment!! You have it nailed this story & its Message to us all, completely!!
While I agree on most of what you wrote, I think he wanted to go back to his loved ones more than to a real society so to speak (even though those loved ones are part of society, ofc.).
You're wrong.
Powerful!
Actually, Sarah, I disagree. The point is that each person will take away from Alex's story what speaks to him/her. All you did is state your opinion, not mine.....
Post Script: I've read Into The Wild and the more recent publication Back To The Wild several times over the years...
I always tear up when I watch this. Such a beautiful person
He lived life the way he wanted to live. He smiled a lot ...He lived a happy life in his terms. Very impressive...
this man made me the person who I am now, thanks Chris
"It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything"
Man I would have loved to meet this guy. Seriously. It would have been so enlightening just to listen to him for a half hour.
just watched Into The Wild. What an amazing and emotional film. What a human being. RIP McCandless.
this man did something amazing. he had a courage and determination. he left, and that was maybe selfish, but he just did what he want and dreamed. people should follow his lead. do things which we love to do. listen to heart.
this man has changed my life completely.....jus made me realize my goals are far from and to reach them i have to take the initiative....a big SALUTE to you fella
i have just read into the wild, i can feel for chris and his need for escape. The Journey he made was so incredible, i admire his guts and determination. I am moved at the photos of him and feel his family's loss, such a special special guy who had such bad luck, heartbreaking story, the last photo will give me nightmares, R.I P Chris
Bless this man, trying to find happiness without materialistic things. I admire him.

He is the brave one! Salute to his courage! He live his life how he want to live it! Within those 4 months he lived his whole life in his way! If I could do like him!! His holy soul is still into the wild & will always be! May His soul rest in peace in the lap of mother nature for ever.....
In memory of "Christopher McCandless", Died-18th August of 1992.
May you R.I.P. 'Into the Wild' my frnd, where you've always find peace Instead of sick 'Society'.
But I'm Happy for you now cause you had broken the cage & flied across towards wild to have some beautiful moments that many among us can't even Imagine...
my inspiration
This music is perfect for Chris' story
what you all are forgetting is the fact that we're all gonna die! many comments on here speak as if we're gonna live forever and not die like chris mcandless did. we're all on our way to death! how we die is of little consequence. how we live is what counts and being able to embrace death with joy in the end. well-prepared for the ultimate journey which is death, and i think chris accomplished that, great and inspirational dude! rock on mcandless!
THE BEST LIFE EVER! THANK YOU CHRIS MCCANDLESS-SUPERTRAMP. FOREVER INTO THE WILD!!!!
RIP, ALEX SUPERTRAMP!!!! YOU WERE AND FOREVER WILL BE A GREAT MAN!!! We can all learn a lot from you!
this man could tell "I was free and I lived best life"....without money...You have my respect
His way of thinking is awesome. I recently watched into the wild. My god can a human do those things. Love you 1992
He inspired me alot. Good guy.
i pay him a lot of respect
Pay him a bit more, as he paraphrases thoreau "rather than respect give me truth"
Rest In Peace Chris!!!! God bless you!!!! You've inspired me so much......... you've inspired me and taught me more than my own mother. It was twenty years ago to this day that they discovered you body and I wish you could have made it out alive, but I know that you are happy up there in heaven. I guess I just want to thank you for changing my life. God Bless
seriously, this guy's my hero. i've never been so overwhelmed by such a story. both the movie and the book shook me to hell.
This video being posted in 2008 is taking me back, beautiful song btw. The bus has been removed by helicopter but I think people will still make the pilgrimage just to camp at the spot the bus was sitting, I would. You can remove the bus but not the call of the wild. There is something intrinsically meaningful about this story and a connection to nature/life that many of us feel. I don't think he meant to die, but he did exactly what he set out to do...know ones self, and feel more connected to life than ever before but of course he was also running away from abuse at home. There is an older video that shows a local dog musher interview and he talked about how there are 2 cabins out there 5 miles away that were broken into that summer and vandalised and he believed it to be Chris. He also had Chris's backpack from the bus for a few years before finding a hidden pocket that had Chris's wallet, multiple forms if ID and $300 cash showing he intended to come back to society. Even showed the ID's right down to his library card which I found interesting as the story goes he gave the last of his pocket change to the guy whom dropped him off. the dog musher also said Chris would have likely never found the bus as snow was everywhere including over river crossings and he likely followed the dog sled trail to find the bus. Chris wasn't stupid albeit unprepared but he had luck on his side a few times or he might not have made it as far as he did. Interesting details I'd not heard before. I found online pictures of the buses while they were being pulled in really winter conditions back in the 60's and one looks like a picture of the bus 142 being left where it's been since.
Alexander Supertramp . . . he is my hero, he had an amazing life and i want to do the same . . . rest in peace
wow this story always makes me so sad. he’s so inspiring
He was quite a brave and courageous man. Not many people could do what he did. Invent a new life and chase his dreams. His story is a sad one... But he taught many to pursue what they believe.
the song is beautiful.
Happiness is only real when shared ...
When I watched this film, I cried for days. I have 3 sons just a few years younger than he was. One of my sons would have done what he did had it been possible. Chris had a great spirit and hunger for life, to experience it on his terms. I feel the same way about society but sometimes you must do what your former choices dictate. I celebrate his spirit but I mourn his loss. Eddie Vedder weaves his story through the film. Great job.
I saw this movie for the first time yesterday. It hit me really hard. Everybody wants to escape, and so few truly do. Well done, Chris. Way to live life on your own terms.
um exemplo de bravura e humanidade! admiração eterna por este cara! queria ter essa coragem!
"In to the wild" movie brought me here
Still and will always remain an inspirational person! May his soul rest in piece
I think that this man was an incredible person. He is an ispiration.
It's story is very beautiful.
I think he didn't die out of stupidity, rather than out of misfortune since the wild potato seeds he'd consumed were (unnoticeable to the human eye) covered in spores of moss which contained a specific alkali chemical that blocked his digestive enzymes, therefore making him unable to regain any strength or to eat a suffice meal, he was merely doomed by chance rather than wits. I see him as an inspiration in that he risked his own life for his beliefs, I cry a bit over him and I didn't even get to meet him, seems as though he's watching by our sides each day as a guardian, I feel as if he's in the great wilderness in the sky, and he's settled at a campfire where we'll join him some day (:
Happiness is only real, when shared. #IntoTheWild
this is a shit phrase. If he wrote this, its because he was dying, and it became famous because society is hypocritical and fearful
bs
every human being has a different mindset, and Christopher McCandless had his own ideas, so we have to respect fellow human beings to maintain harmony.
Be your self😊
Sweet words do not represent the true looking for peace in the world my friend. He could be what he wanted to be, as he did in his life and I respect him for that. But that is not the point here. I think we have to respect fellow 'animals beings' too to keep harmony.
So beautiful thank you. May he Rest In Peace and become the phoenix. God bless him
Into the wild is by far one of the most inspirational films i have ever watched...
may 'Supertramp' Rest is peace
If your going to travel like him a word of advice, use your head. If you have next to no wild life or surviving knowlage dont try to live in the middle of alaska (or anywhere else for that matter) for a half year...
He didn't plan on being at the bus for that long, I don't think. They told him wait til spring for Alaska. He thought they meant because of the cold, but they meant it about spring runoff causing the rivers to swell. He was trapped since his map didn't show the cable crossing down river, and he couldn't get back across. So unfortunate.
@@FredtheDorfDorfman1985 what's a spring runoff ?
M. Shambho rising temperatures causing melt water from snow, and glaciers, to cause the rivers to swell, and become uncrossable.
@@FredtheDorfDorfman1985 I figured that out by now budd. But thanks anyways.
@@FredtheDorfDorfman1985 he did he even have the map
We all need to find our bus in life.

It is in front of my eyes now, ... as it did hapen yesterday.)
The rest is a my Life's Story.

The bus was his downfall.

История и жизненный путь Криса тронули очень многих, и многих заставили задуматься над смыслом своей жизни...
I love the song.. And I LOVE Chris & his life story, he's such an inspiration to me. Even before I even heard of the movie Into the Wild, I've always wanted to travel the world & experience it by walking & feeling the earth under my feet. I don't know if I'll ever have the guts to do it, but there's still hope that one day I'll travel the world & see everything there is to see.
(Between all these haters and captious critics) HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTOPHER MCCANDLESS! aka Alex Supertramp. ;)
As i understood, he had some family issues. He looked happy on those pictures. I dont know, i understand a will for freedom. But that is horrible way to day.
He lived his life the way he chose, had he lived I believe he would have returned to society and hold dear the memories of a wonderful adventure he had in his youth.
A VERY INSPIRATIONAL YOUNG MAN, ALWAYS REMEMBERED
R.I.P. Christopher Johnson McCandless.
Patrick (Ireland)
i respect him above all. Not only did he follow his dream, but as he knew he was dying he worried about other people. And said God bless everybody he knew. Not only that he had taken pictures of him smiling just days before his death, he was in massive amounts of pain. Incredibly inspiring. Incredibly brave.
Freedom calls
what an extreme inspiring story I ever had, together is wonderful
amazing guy.. just got half way though ' Into The Wild '.. One of the best books I've read!! true inspiration
Born free and died free, an un-institutionalized American. Mad respect friend, mad respect
He did what he wanted in his heart and i respect him for that, but his only mistake was not gaining enough experience in the wild. I look up to this man in some ways because i also have that urge to break free from society but he did it the wrong way. (in my opinion)
***** Jimmy Cliff is cool but check the record labels he signed to. Those record labels' business practices were part of the reason McCandless apparently became disillusioned with modernised lifestyles.
As for McCandless himself, he has proved why we are social animals. He wanted to scale it back but ignored what is human nature. We are social animals
ellshot
it takes guts to do what this man did. he escaped the combine and experienced true happiness. most of us never will be able to do that.
When I read that book I was in college aiming for health care administration. Now I live on my boat, sail around doing subsistence fishing, busking, reading GOOD literature, and sometimes doing bedside nursing when I need money.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Chris M!
Amazing the difference one authentic person can make...
I don’t understand why we’re supposed to romanticize this guy’s misguided and inexperienced trek into the wild. His lust for life and demand for adventure got him killed. As a born and raised Alaskan I can tell you I’ve had some adventure and close calls myself yet my experience governs my limitations. Someone like Dick Proenneke went into the wild with knowledge and experience and didn’t die; he lived in the middle of BF nowhere until the age of 82 when his family practically dragged him back to civilization and nobody ever talks about him.
I feel for the blokes family, I really do but by putting him up on a pedestal we’re only encouraging other people to seek the same fate.
+joepassino 79 died at 82
oops... thanks
But what do you think about this case? Should it be a cautionary tale about biting off more than you can chew or should we learn to live life to the fullest because you never know…?
+joepassino Something similar crossed my mind when he was white water kayaking (in the movie) without a helmet or permit. If he bangs his head on a rock at this point, does he still get elevated into folklore, or is he just a statistic and a minor news story?
joepassino you don't understand and that's the point. It was his journey. You aren't obligated to understand it. But don't meet things you don't understand with hate or negativity

This man is the pure Aquarius zodiac. The archetype Aquarius-Sagittarius thing
Can you explain yourself a little bit more please?
Well, I'm not a native English-speaker, but I can try.
Aquarius has a 'rebel' archetype. Chris was a rebel with his parents and the society values. Aquarius has a vanguard vision, intellectual and it likes to be different than others.
And Saggitarius reminds freedom. They love to travel, discover new things and start new adventures. They prefer be free instead create laces.
Since Chris was a child, he had this adventurer spirit. When he grew up, the Aquarius archetype become predominant, and it joined with his adventurer spirit.
So, when he's started his journey, he joined this two "archetypes" and assumed a new identity called Alexander "Supertramp".
Please have some respect for the guy and don't label him with this esoteric bullshit.
What's the problem to compare his behavior with zodiac? I am not disrespecting, just comparing. This isn't offensive to me, nor my intention... It's just my opinion. You are free to agree or not :)
even m aquarius...I hate to think so much about life...

It warms my heart to know that there are/were good people in this world who don't sit behind computers & judge; who have a higher moral code. The movie, which I know is not real, depicted a troubled family life.To chose this kind of life over the alternative is brave.Who are ppl behind computers to negatively judge a stranger? It makes me sick to read negativity about someone that none of us knew. Bravo, Chris! I wish that our paths crossed.True, only the good die young. :(
I think it was more his character and symbolism of his actions that made him a hero. The people that he met have all said that, although they only knew him for a short period of time, there was something about his character that stuck with them when he left. He was inspirational in that he did exactly what he wanted to do: he was unhappy living a materialistic life and instead wanted to find something greater in the world. Which I believe we all aspire to do in our own lives in our own way.
A pure, beautiful soul.
after watching the Into the3 wild i have started changing my life for the better Chris is a modern day hero a example to us all..i salute you Chris where ever you may be R,I,P buddy :)
Into the wild changed my life...awesome movie!! It made me realise what life is all about and thanks to this great man who inspired me i have also chosen to be a free spirit like him and do what i like after i get over with my studies.i found out that money has no value and we dont need money to live.May god help me do this and let all the people know this great truth!! :)
He died with a legacy which is more than he could have asked for. He spread his message for all to hear and I think that is a beautiful way to go out as tragic as it was. I mean we all die eventually so putting it in perspective, it's a great way to go out. I have the deepest respect for Chris.
Thank you Chris, for showing people what it means to 'live' Thank you..

Chris was right! True happiness must be shared! God bless
what a MAN.His life adventure shows how men can live only with the help of the nature, and can find who they really are.We are nature's creature,we are born free and we should die free. But we prefer to live in safety,in the comfort of our homes,in our civilization that makes us ALL slaves. We are scared of being free.Real freedom scares men.Maybe we are too cowards to return to our roots."Into the wild".But You DID IT Chris!YOU are an example for men.May God bless Your soul "Alexander Supertramp".
