Enjoyed the review. I love the Mackpac. Definitely not for rough construction, they are for a finish carpenter that doesn't trash their tools, wants them organized in dedicated/organized boxes, and stores a ton of tools in a tight space. They are a direct copy of old Festool boxes, so Makita isn't designing them, just buying branded versions from Tanos who makes them for a number of tool companies.

I bought a Makita plunge cut saw recently and it came in the #4 Makpac box. Then I noticed the Systainer box for my Mirka sander fit perfectly on top of the Makpac box, and the Makpac even clipped to it! The next day these went on sale and so I grabbed a bunch in various sizes. Love that I can fit them all together, and that they don’t take up as much room as the Packout and other brands. There's two ways to remedy the hard to use latches (not sure if that's what you meant with flimsy): silicon oil, or some filing on the sides of the latches. To remove them for filling, open them and slightly twist them from the top so the bottom part unlocks. The oil is better, unless you have only few makpac.

Useful vid, Ive a big selection of these and they are great. Very secure and get abused - different sizes do different jobs eg No4 has plumbing , No2 electric dills etc. I always know whats missing so it saves a lot of time and I get to jobs knowing I’ve got the kit. Equally they all pack into a hatchback. I’ve also a small selection of Festool and other than the latch there’s not much between them. Now tools are very expensive so solid boxes well organised I found are a wise investment. Small mod to the latches and they work fine. 👍🏻

  • @Ist_Geheim
    @Ist_Geheim Před 2 lety +2

I have macpacs (all 4 sizes) and as I do only some DIY and take care about all my stuff they are good enough for me. Size 1 is good to keep my batteries in it, you could put up to10 batteries in there. Size 2 is perfect for my "protection setup" (eye-protection, ear-protection, ffp3-half-mask, gloves, a thin cotton "hat" to keep any "shit" away from my hair) and has even space for a lamp and the usb-charger.
I don't put as many tools as I can in one size 4-box as you do. I take a tool or tools that belong together and it's asserories and figure out which is the smallest size macpac I need to fit it into. Example: handsaw and jigsaw go together in a size 3. So I have more boxes, but I grab only the one or two boxes I need plus my "protection" box plus batteries. Chargers I leave at home, only for camping I recently bought the 12v-car-charger for my 18v batteries that will go with me (didn't try that charger out yet).
I realized that every box is a little different regarding the clamps and the handles. On some boxes they are very loose and easy to move, on other boxes they are harder to move. Some clamps sit so hard that I sometimes have problems to open them with my thumb. My solution to this is that I have always a spare wrench placed under the handle of the top box, so it's always there and I can open the clams without "breaking" my fingers.
And I put tape on every box where I write on what's inside the box. When I have to reorganize, I can put a new tape on. (Example: DHR243 fits with accessories (drills, chisels, chisel-grease) in size 2, then I bought the DX07 for it and it all together has it's new place in a size 3 box.

Makpak fits the Japanese market and sensibilities perfectly, physically smaller and lighter for physically smaller people, even smaller work vans, homes and offices they have to work in. As there is some overlap with European sensibilities and living space, I'd expect them to be more popular there. Also, Japanese tend to respect their equipment, and most would never even think about using a tool box as a f'n stool 😆 in the first place as it's probably a major health and safety violation.
It makes sense the milwaukee version is more popular here, they're meant to be gorilla/grizzly proof. Trouble is if you handle multiple trades you need a 4 ton truck with a lift gate to get them in and out.

The side clamps are handy if only few tools are used in a site so I simply clamp the batteries onto one of the small box and carry it together in hand. The basic design and footprint of the Makita Macpac is good, but Makita really needs to take a hard look and ask themselves, does our Macpac system shout quality?
I take the point that they are toolboxes and not steps, but they are used on building sites in a hostile environment so should be on the rugged and not fragile side of the scale. If they are not keen on beefing up the standard box, they could manufacture strengthening inserts as optional extras.
The flimsy inserts that they do make for the various toolsets are atrocious. Being flimsy would not be so bad if the tool sets they are moulded for, fit. Take the Makita angle grinder insert, the spaced contoured for the battery and handle are nothing like either item and there is no space for the locking bar.
Makita should provide foam inserts as standard, or at the very least offer them as optional extras, or do a deal with pre-cut shadowfoam and at least offer a quality insert.

It’s all very strange!, iv never seen any festool box’s close up or any of the other manufacturers boxes so all iv got to go on is videos and pictures but comparing macpac to festool boxes the festool boxes seem to be made of thicker plastic and I like how they have the T-loc system, seems pretty cool that you can fasten a few manufacturers boxes together in a tower, would you say that makita maybe can’t use the T-Loc system because of copyright and licensing problems??, man I don’t know if I’m more informed or more confused 🤪🤪

I have a couple Packout, and just got my first Makita case. The Packout is definitely stronger, but it weighs so much more and the walls are a lot thicker.
If you need the robustness of the Packout, then you need it. If waterproof storage is useful, then Packout. But I don’t ever expect to leave my tools outside unattended. I don’t think there will be a lot of rain hitting them. And waterproof containers can also keep moisture inside if you put wet tools in them, so that’s a risk.

I have three of them... came with my 2x18V track saw and one other tool I have. If you desire a lightweight stacking box system then they are okay, but will not stand up to typical commercial use by most professionals. They work for me since I don't need a heavy duty case system, being a general home owner user. The clamps/clips are easily broken. One very cool feature is they snap into/onto Festool cases.
My complaint... they are way, way overpriced for what you get. Basic thin boxes with no dividers/foam inserts. If they cost about 1/3 to 1/2 of what they do, they would be worth getting.

Yes the Makpacs are weaker than the Milwaukee and Dewalt boxes !
You've pointed out most the problems with the Makpacs being brittle but as you say it only becomes a problem when you abuse them , a lot of people that complain about the makpacs are the sort of people that sling they're makpacs in the back of the van and then pile stuff on top of them , they then wonder why they break !
Don't stand or sit on Makpacs ( Jon you're lighter than me so you might be ok 🤣 ) . As you said They're tool boxes not fucking hop-ups !
Put greese on the side of the clips ! I hear a lot of people complaining about hurting they're fingers and getting broken nails ( must be the sparkies 🤔🤣 ) when opening makpacs and to be fair they have a point about the clips being stiff ! But come on a bit of fucking greese sorts this straight out 👍
Whatch out for the plastic hinge pins as they do work them selves loose and can be lost 👍
No Makpacs are no where near as strong as Milwaukee pack outs or DeWalts T-Stack/Tough systems but they're still good boxes 👍
As for the sack truck , sorry i'm not paying £100 for a sack truck ! i bought a cheapo £30 sack truck from machinemart that does the trick almost as well but is also a better sack truck . . .. . . . and yes i'm a tight c*nt 🤣
Another great review although after 5 years of owning Makpacs i'd advise you not to sit or stand on them 🤣

      Thanks for your video's

  • @man.i.literally.failed6772

Love the review, to break one of these you have to be rough as guts, Milwaukee do crap tools but when it comes to blades, tool boxes etc they nail it, I have 3 Milwaukee cases for screws, but I'll be using the makpac for it looks and ease of use, plus I can fit them any where or how I configure my work vehicle.

I love my Makita tools and some came in MakPac boxes. I don't do lots of rough work, but stuff gets battered about in the back of the van. As a result, I've found the Milwaukee Packout boxes to be much better but the price is completely disgusting so only got a few organisers. I like that you can get Stealth Mounts for them so I can put the box on the side of my racking rather than storing on the floor. Honestly got my eyes on the Magnusson set from Screwfix as the price is okay and the quality is honestly much better than of the MakPac.

Makita usually uses fibre reinforced plastic on their tools - I can’t remember the exact composition - but provides extra strength.
I don’t see that same approach for their Makpac boxes - using a proprietary bend of reinforced materials. It’s real brittle and badly designed. Almost like it’s designed to fail.

People forget that Makita’s original claim to fame is about how light their tools are and NOT how tough. It makes perfect sense they made these boxes and the dolly as light as possible. Doesn’t really make much sense to go out and buy the lightest/smallest tools and pack them in the heaviest boxes on the market.

That is an astonishingly bad effort from Makita. I love their tools, but there is little reason to buy this over the competition. I like that the inside is fairly square and I'm not particularly tough on my tools, but those locks fall off way too easy. LOL @ needing matching boxes for your tools. That's a good bit, but I'd happily throw my Makita tools in the Packout or even RIDGID. Subbed for good Makita content - but Makpak is completely out of the equation for me, and I wanted to love it.
