To be honest, they are both flawed, and even similar in personality which is what makes it so damn good. They're both hot-headed guys with a rebellious streak, the only difference is that Daniel ended up with a support system that Johnny didn't have. The way their lives played out differently after high school just shows us how much of a difference it makes to constantly be around people who support you in a healthy manner.
Yea and like Ali said in season 3, johnny and daniel have so much in common that they didn't get along
Johnny Lawrence was really the nicest of the bad guys. The whole time he was provoked by Larusso. He didn't fight really badly and unfairly either.
And in the end he gave Larusso the cup and said that he deserved it. Would Larusso have done the same?
It’s why Kreece is back in Cobra Kai.
Side note neither had a good father figure either. Until Daniel met Mr. Miyagi.

@John Lapuz Yeah, I think it's more that. Johnny isn't such an irredeemably bad guy that he has no ethics. He can justify things like going after Daniel in a group, but directly targeting an injury during a competition is just a bit too far. The situation has clear rules and he doesn't want to violate them.
It's a great contrast between him and Kreese, who has no ethics and believes in winning at all cost. Highlights how Johnny is just a pawn.

There’s a comic of Cobra Kai that is just a side story but explain more about Johnny and his life. It had a panel that show Johnny after the tournament seeing Daniel kissing Ali at the end which I think is why he’s still mad at Daniel and his loss.

Johnny and the other CK's were never really bullies in the traditional sense. They only ever beat up kids who got in their way like Daniel did. Watch the beach scene and they seem to be on friendly terms with Daniels new pals and the soccer scene in school shows them mixing quite socially with other school kids. Bobby certainly isn't a bully.

oh my god facts. and on top of that, his father was gone and he was left with a evil stepfather that always picked on him and made him feel terrible. his childhood was full of misery and sadness, i can’t imagine the weight he had on his shoulders. he never had a father figure like daniel had with mr. miyagi /: we never knew what was going on behind closed doors but i’m truly glad that cobra kai let us know about johnny’s personal life more.
Rewatching this, you can see the seeds of how these two could’ve become friends. I could at least see Daniel getting in his crew, he was a little wise ass with balls and Johnny could’ve liked having that around if it weren’t for Ali.
If Daniel joined cobra Kai he would be the same way as Johnny
I'm honestly waiting for the day in Season 4 where Daniel has the realization to thank Johnny for beating the crap out of him in '84 otherwise his life would have never turned out the way it did in prominent fashion thanks to meeting Mr. Miyagi and training under him as a result of being bullied. Not for nothing either. It's subtle but its there. Thanks to Samantha cracking up Johnny's car and forcing Johnny to encounter LaRusso. It changed his present and future life for the better.

I feel like the reason people root for johnny during cobra kai is because majority of them haven't even watched the entire karate kid film, and most documentaries that prove Daniel was the "real bully" forget to leave out the part where johnny tortures Daniel for most of his time in school.
Seeing the whole karate kid was the reason why i empathized with Johnny xd, at first was a hardcore daniel fan & johnny hater, the daniel being the real bully is something no sense, but “tortures” ?? What?? They were just teenagers acting like teenagers, both flawed, not justifying johnny, he indeed did some things wrong but daniel is not innocent at all

When this movie came out I was 13. Total Daniel fan! I was in Ralph Machio fan club (Johnny from the Outsiders), I was hooked. Now at 51, as I watch Cobra Kia, I'm more of a Johnny Lawrence fan. His style takes be straight back to everything I loved about being a teenager in the 80s. Lol

Honestly Ali literally was such the cause for everything, I mean yes she didn’t like him anymore but she clearly tried her best to make Johnny jealous. I don't understand why Johnny is jealous of Daniel. Daniel become rich because he worked hard and study not like Johnny who ruined his life by taking drugs,drinking alcohol,hanging out with different girls and making his life miserable.
