Cranks Can Creak Too: Cannondale Si Crank System Overhaul

  • The Cannondale Si modular crank system has been around a long time now, starting on the high end with the machined-out Hollowgram, and then going right down the line to the standard “Si”-branded, beam-arm cranks. The modularity of the Si crankset was a revelation and has set the standard for all cranks to follow such as the Easton EC90, RaceFace Next, Hope Evo, and most others. If it features a removable, splined spider, it’s an echo of the Si.
The Si’s modularity does cause some creaking problems, unfortunately, as the many components offer many places for interfaces to flex and move as they loosen up over time. This is why Si cranks, and modular crank in general, often develop creaks that sound just like bottom bracket creaking. Never fear, the creaky crank syndrome can be cured with easy, as we show you in this video series.

Helped me solve a creak between crank arm and spider that I originally thought was from the BB. Thank you!

Bada bing, bada boom! I recently did the work as shown on the video, but didn’t look carefully at the interface. Update 10/6/2022. Installed crank after service in the video and letting fixing compound cure. Road up a really steep trail near me, including standing and mashing peddles. I’m 6’4”, 200 lb so lay down some force. Not a peep from the crank. I’ve spent hundreds including new crank set, wheels rebuilt been through almost everything. I’m on my third divorce, stressful job etc, but can honestly say my cares all went away. Praise Jesus, my 2013 scalpel is quiet again!
I’m really surprised that my LBS didn’t know about this.

Excellent feedback! I'm glad we were able to help you solve the mystery creak that vexes many an Si owner, and mechanic. We also advocate replacing the alloy bolts after 2 or 3 torque cycles, in other words, after being installed and removed. Some may scoff at this but the brittle nature of the aluminum bolts, the thinned out machining, and the high torque value conspire to compromise the structure.
Amen. Kanye "Ye" is right, "Jesus is King".

Wow. Beautifully explained. Thank you. So I guess those are spacers that dont give a clean look between bottom bracket and crank arm. I thougt there was something missing or not properly installed on my Cannondale Topstone carbon gravel bike. Thank you.

Thanks for your video, I followed your instructions and hope the creaks are gone forever

Forever? That'll be forever in dog years, because it will eventually come back after a few hot/cold cycles, which is a year or two or more.

So… these are known for this? Please say yea because I’ve gone through 2 hollowgram sisl 2’s and I’m losing my mind. I now think I need to thread lock the spline into the crank arm lie you did here. Maybe that will save this headache and retreat for spending so much money on a systemsix. 😂

Use the proper retaining compound and the problems will be solved.

My SLSi2 started creaking recently. Both crank arms had cracks on them, looked like scratches on first inspection. I’ve replaced it with a Dura Ace chainset. The bbinfinite pf30a module has been removed & I’m expecting my Shimano DirectFit to be with me next week 👍

There are a lot of different direct mount rings for the Si cranks made by various manufacturers. You can get just about any size you want in various offsets because the Si crank has been around a long time and has been spec'd on road, gravel, and Mtbs for years. Sounds like you're going to have some fun looking up chain rings. Researching bike stuff is part of the adventure.

Hi! How come I can silent the bike when I throw water on the crank? It works for max 2 days but it's something weird.

Remove the crank, clean it up, and reinstall it with a light coat of grease on spindle. The noise is likely coming from the spindle-to-bearing races contacts.

Any way to determine if the creak is coming from the BB or the Crank? My 2012 Evo has a mean recurring creak and i'm not sure which process to eliminate first.

The wave washer on both my Cannondales are nearly flat, with just a slight wave left. Definitely not a big space like this video.
One bike is factory the other has your module. But neither has that big of a space on the spindle.

    • @BBInfinite
      @BBInfinite  Před 2 lety

We like a lot of compression the wave washer for our products. In this vid it's not quite as compressed as we like it. We didn't show it, but we ended up adding a 0.5mm ship to get it to about 85%-ish. For a factory setup this would not work because there is not central sleeve between the inner races like their is with out BB's which prevent over-preloading.
