The main reason was Disney was never interested in marketing Treasure Planet even though it was the dream project of the makers who worked with Disney for a long time. • @lawrencejones1517
    @lawrencejones1517 Před 2 lety +171

    This movie is based on the book, Treasure Island by Robert Lewis Stevenson. Interestingly, Disney made a live action movie of the book, one of their first live action movies, also. Treasure Planet is amazing from an animation point of view because it was a hybrid of classic cell animation and computer animation. It was well written and fantastically animated, but while Disney originally green lit the production, with the proposed follow on TV series, several companies lead by Pixar, were making computer animated features that were a step above cell animation. Disney saw that cell animation was dying, and computer animation was the future. If they wanted to be a part of that future, they were going to have to follow the other animation studio's lead. This resulted in Treasure Planet being under promoted so it wouldn't do well at the box office, and also canceling the TV series.

    I think this movie connects more with boys/men because it's basically a father and son story. A lot of boys can sympathize with Jim Hawkins (wanting a dad/man role in their lives to show them the ropes), and a lot of dads can sympathize with John Silver (making mistakes throughout life, but finding redemption in being a role model, and using tha to be a better man)

    Yes, you are familiar with the directors, you just probably don't recognize the name. They were Disney's golden boys and this was there dream project, but Disney kept saying no. They kept saying, "make another great movie and we will green light your treasure island in space movie", but it was always one now movie

    You got my subscirption for Treasure Planet and respect for seeing you also reacted to Atlantis! You are awesome!
    I really liked the cooking scene Silver did in this movie, as a kid, I found it mersmerizing for some reason. As an adult, I just realized I liked watching cooking. And animated cooking done in detail was extra so!

    26:15 “Dammit Jim I’m an astronomer not a doctor” is a clever nod to Star Trek where Doctor McCoy would say to Captain Kirk “Damnit Jim I’m a doctor not a ____” and say whatever the situation was.

    John Rzeznik from Goo Goo Dolls does the song "I'm Still Here"
    Which is used during the Jim and Silver montage where he has his flashbacks.
    Also the movies ending song used in its credits "Always Know Where You Are"

    A highly underrated film. This was my childhood movie! My three childhood Disney films where Dinosaur, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Treasure Planet. All three scored by the amazing talented James Newton Howard. Those scores would always play in my head as a child. I highly recommend Dinosaur (2000) it’s a another simple but underrated Disney film. Some amazing CGI for 2000.

    Ah, this movie has never gotten as much love as it should. Pleasure to watch you get caught up in it! And you're right! The "loot of a thousand worlds" could have been put to all kind of good use. But you're a nice person. Captain Flint was a pirate, and a nasty one at that! That much loot, more than you could spend in a hundred lifetimes, was probably just a way of keeping score to him. This one was a pleasure, Mary. Thank you!

    This film was absolutely my childhood. It is amazing. The visuals are astounding, the soundtrack is the definition of perfection. It even got a sequel (of sorts) in the PC game Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon that brings a lot of things in Jim and Silver's relationship full circle, as well as expanding the lore of the TP universe. We actually get to see Jim commanding his own ship in that game. Point of note, at the end, he isn't a captain yet, he's been accepted into the academy. Either way, great film, I'm so glad to find people that also enjoy Treasure Planet, as it truly is one of the greatest films ever made.
