Mary Cherry, somebody just replied to my comment on mattpetty1 saying they have something for me showing a row of up right middle fingers and used your picture. I reported it. I can take the fingers just fine. It was using your thumbnail picture that bothered me.
@@mattpetty1 I got the exact reply too.
@@chadking1938 I got another one identical from the same (BOT) ? 19 minutes ago
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAA????? YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IRON GIANT. GODDAMN MASTERPIECE. Unfortunately, they created the "Best Animated Feature category one year after this movie was released and Bombed in the Theater.
The director made this film inspired from when his sister was gun down by her ex-husband, so he questioned “What if a gun had a soul?”, “How would it feel?” and “Would it still want to be one if it had a choice?”. Thus birthed the cult classic we have now. This film was is also based on a book with a similar anti-war sentiment, but with a different story.
The director also did the incredibles :) Brad bird is great :)
@@captainteeko4579 He also did Ratatouille
Wow, that's really messed up. All I can say is, who knew?
In other words, he blamed the gun, and not the person that used it.
I didn't know that! Thank you for the fact!
"You are who you choose to be"
"Superman"
After all those years, it still makes me emotional. What a great film.
Me too.
Same here.
Big same.
The Iron Giant: "Hogarth, you stay. I go, no following."
Right?!!
"Souls don't die,"
This movie takes place at the height of the Cold War. Paranoia and nuclear obsession was practically an American pastime at this point in history. Mansley’s heightened fear, anxiety, and need to destroy any potential threat is a reflection of America during that time.
Exactly.
Yuuuuup big true.
Ummm, the dissolution of the Soviet Union was in 1991.
@@ericifune5543 Duh, this was set in the 1950's.
"That" time?
*looks at news feed on Internet*
As in past tense?
"You are what you chose to be" That message is still with me to this day
Superman...🥲🥲🥲
I got a sticker of the Iron Giant with that quote on one of my sketch books now, I love the movie and that quote
Oh, The Iron Giant will forever be one of my top movies of all-time. I've probably seen it close to 50 times by now and I cry every time. It's one of those movies that I consider perfect from start to end. I loved it the first time I saw it when I was 8 years old and I still love it just as much today. Dean is probably the most relatable character for me and continues to be as I get older. All I need is my espresso, my art, and my house in the woods away from town. And let me live my life in peace, thank you! 💛
50?? Weak Numbers
@@camerontarantino5425 xD
@@camerontarantino5425 Might be just me, but when I rewatch movies, I typically don't rewatch it more than twice in a year. 😉
same I absolutely love this movie one of my favorite movies of all time
Agreed, it's among my top favorite classic animated movies from my childhood, the only one not made by Disney or DreamWorks, though both have a fair share of classically good movies from that era too
From “Superman” to “I am Groot,” Vin Diesel is a voice actor who I didn’t know was a great voice actor. I also love the lesson of “the body may die, but the soul lives forever” as another underlying message handling the loss of a loved one. Plus the pitch of, “What if a gun had a soul, and didn’t want to be a gun” makes this movie extra special next to this being dedicated to Susan Bird, may the forces chaos have given her peace.
The Signature Edition has this incredible scene where Dean is watching, horrified, as the Giant's dreams/nightmares of his origin/previous life are being broadcast on his TV.
Where can I find that footage?
@@stevenmacknight9960 If you just want to watch the footage, not spliced into the movie, just look up Iron Giant dream scene on CZcams.
I love this movie so much and it's still surprising that this wasn't successful at the box office. The friendship between Hogarth and the Iron Giant is the best part of the film.
Me too.
It is a classic among the people though.
I saw it in theaters with my mom and stepdad as a little kid. The theater was empty aside from us
I worked at a theater when this came out. There was almost no advertising for it, plus Disney was still the king of animation at the time. That's why it did rather poorly. Thankfully, the internet has told its tale, and the film has slowly been growing in popularity for years.
At least it’s widely recognized as one of the best animated movies ever and over the years it’s probably done well in vhs/dvd sales etc, it is a shame it was a huge hit tho because it’s stellar
Saw the movie as a child and it can still bring tears to my eyes more than twenty years later!
same 😭 😭 😭 😭
10/10 movie… one of the best cartoon stories. Good for kids, and even better for adults
"Where ya goin'? Where ya goin'? Where ya goin'?"
"IM GOIN' OUT!!"
Makes me laugh every time. 🤣
Love this movie, one of my childhood favourites. ❤️
"Because you are a Kent." - Mary at her most savage.
If you're not tearing up at the end when the Giant tells Hogarth to stay and he'll go than frankly you have no heart or soul.
The director of this movie, Brad Bird, would go on to join Pixar and make Ratatouille and both Incredibles movies and has also recently directed a Mission:Impossible film (Ghost Protocol) and Tomorrowland. He really does have a great storyteller's mind and delivers his vision to the screen.
"Superman" ..😭😭😭
Almost never picked up DVD to watch it first time bc assumed it was a lame cartoon based on nothing - missus insisted I do and so glad she persuaded me. (Though she giggled a little too hard when my eyes watered at the Superman moment)
I remember seeing this in theaters as a kid this is a huge part of my childhood god I miss the 90s.
The voice of Iron Giant is Vin Diesel. The same man did voice of Groot Guardians of the Galaxy & Dominic Toretto in Fast & Furious series.
And Riddick in the Pitch Black series.
I'm 55, and damn...that scene at the end where he says 'Superman'....I tear up every bloody time....
The giants roar always gives me shivers, it’s not deep bellow or scary it’s just pure rage and anger.
Ugh.. This is a very nostalgic movie for me. I can remember my childhood days by this movie, back in the days when life is so simple for me.
The Iron Giant is one of my favorite childhood films. And it's a shame this movie never got a sequel.
Me too.
I was 25 when this movie came out and it's still one of my all-time favorites!
I'm thankful that this didn't get a sequel. I strongly doubt that the heart of this film would be present in the sequel and that would only take away from this film.
@@logankerlee Agreed, this is the kind of perfect movie that doesn't need a follow up, it's all already there and it's great!
same but i don't think it needs a sequel it's perfect the way it is
"Is this movie a hidden gem?" Yes. Yes it is.
The squirrel in the beginning reminded me of a squirrel we encountered during a trip to one of the Disney parks when my kids were very little. The squirrels there were so accustomed to being around humans that they seemed almost tame. Note I said "almost tame". When one of us reached out towards it, it took a swipe at the hand.
If a gun had a soul, would it still choose to be a weapon? a beautiful question which casued a beautiful film
Watching this as a little kid, i loved it when the giant turns on the army, wiping out tanks and sneding them running. now i understand how tragic it is, he tired so hard to resist and in one moment of weakness the purpose he was built for takes over. it makes what he does in the end so much more beautiful
one of my favorite animated films ever. it hits that perfect spot between nostalgia, saccharine sweetness, and darkness/horror.

as to how the giant survived, aside from just "it's a kid's movie, so he lives," 1) this thing didn't burn up on entry into earth's atmosphere or so much as flinch at everything else the army threw at him. he's clearly pretty sturdy. 2) he's also clearly built to break into pieces when hit with enough force rather than be crushed, so i guess you could theorize that something about how he's constructed made him fall to pieces rather than be vaporized by the bomb.
I mean, it's clearly some kind of interstellar war machine (well, it _was_ before it learned it could be whatever it wanted and decided to be Superman). It'd be surprising if it _couldn't_ survive a nuke.
@@mbpoblet Originally the Giant wasn't meant to live to teach kids about death but that was too dark, so that scene was added to make it a happy ending.
My most favorite movie of all time. The directors cut has a scene explaining what The Iron Giants "species" does, its a really cool scene that I wish they left in.
This is a fantastic film, honestly I could rewatch this movie a dozen times over and still appreciate it.
Me too.
I have.
"We don't have squirrels here." They were eaten by the spiders
Your comment reminded me of "Kingdom of the Spiders" with William Shatner. A must watch if you haven't seen it, Kenneth.
In Australia, the Spiders ARE the size of squirrels. 😱
@@logandarklighter And that is why we will take all of your actors and none of your fauna... flora too. 😀
Remember my dad showing us this film when we were kids! A true classic!
This movie will always have a special place in my heart. Vin Diesel was also in Pitch Black. Highly recommended Sci-Fi action
Let’s not forget he voiced groot from guardians of the galaxy 🌌 and other MCU movies.
Pitch Black was fantastic. Great film for sure.
Pitch Black was an awesome sci-fi movie really recommend it
Mary: "This is gonna be one of the saddest cartoons I ever saw."
*Don Bluth has entered the chat*
This movie is and always will be my childhood..to this day I still get choked up on queue with “Superman. 😊” 😭
One of the greatest animated films, so glad you reacted! I get goose bumps everytime he goes berserk
I legitimately love this movie so much, how misunderstood the giant was is indeed tragic. That he was given an incredible opportunity to be what he chose to be and he became a hero it's beautiful... That being said the thing that's always stuck with me since childhood is: the only reason he had independence was because of his crash landing. Had that not happened he'd have followed his function and destroyed earth and likely would have signaled the others to wipe out the planet, because keep in mind there's a ton of other ones out there following the function to destroy planets and likely conquer the survivors of each conquest. That alone was terrifying and really made the future bleak, one giant who chose to be more than a weapon against armies that never made the same choice because they never had the chance to break away from their function. Shame we never got a sequel because I wanted more (still do lol) and I'd love to see how they get out of that situation! (Keep in mind that the reason I believe they dodged a massive bullet temporarily is because the Giant arrived alone, he's a scout and that means when it doesn't report back there's going to be an investigation and when life is found on earth.... Yeah that's not going to end well I don't think)
This movie is a classic. It initially bombed in the box office but became popular when it reached home video. This movie kicked off Brad Bird's career before Pixar picked him up to do The Incredibles.
“Is this movie a Hidden Gem, ‘cause I literally just heard about it”
It’s literally THE hidden gem of animated movies
Speaking of robots: please watch "Short Circuit" (1986).
And Short Circuit 2! :D
Childhood favorite. I always get emotional watching it. ❤
One of those fantastic films I wish had been a bigger part of my childhood (saw it once at a friend’s birthday party and then I don’t think I saw it again until high school)
My all time favourite animated movie, also the movie that made me appreciate superman
This is what got Vin Diesel the roll of Groot.
26 Years of age I DON'T CARE i will always cry to my childhood movie from YT reactors reacting to this movie, absolutely a classic in my eye's imo.
This movie always hits me in the feels, BIG TIME! I'm always a sobbing mess at the end. Such a great film. Very glad that they didn't make this into a series.
Thank you for reacting to this!
Iron Giant: I am not a gun 👉
Me: You are Groot 🌴
IMO one of the greatest animated movies EVER made. I cried towards the end the first time I saw it, but every viewing since then I've been teary at SO MANY parts because I know the foreshadowing...
I haven’t seen this movie in years!!! I remember when this came out!!! So good!!!
It's a fun movie. It's easily a very 'Kids' Movie', but a pretty good one for that. I especially remember when it was new. I'm 38 now and I even remember being open to the idea of it getting sequel(s). :D
I love animations in general and this movie is one of the reasons for that I saw this movie when I was a kid and I still love it. thnks for making a video about it
There are two scenes that always break me in this film. The Giant’s sacrifice, of course. The other is the “souls don’t die” scene. With the latter scene with Hogarth consoling and giving hope to the Giant informing and giving extra power to the later sacrifice scene.
An all-time great movie, had me crying in the cinema!
You can’t get much more of a hidden gem than Iron Giant. Sooo good.
I had this on VHS as kid, forgot how much I hated the FBI agent.
I still get tears in my eyes during that scene with Iron Giant sacrificing himself.
GREAT choice - beautiful flick.
If this doesn't make you emotional, ladies and gents.. you got something missing, fr. 🤖
I loved this Movie (And I loved watching Mary watch it) (FUN FACT) the director made this Movie in memory of his sister who died from gun violence from her Husband
That’s right.
wow.. I loved this movie as a little boy
I saw this episode over on patreon and it made me so happy, I loved that you enjoyed this
"And they have the audacity to call the giant a monster."
_Just like the audicity to imply regular hunters are monsters._
Yeah that comment from her came off as pretty wild to me too lol
Hey Mary, you need to watch "The Fox and The Hound" if you haven't trust me it's one of Disney's darkest animations, but a true work of art
Love your reactions x
Loved this film from my childhood and still do
With that ending they should've made an Iron Giant 2!
Sometimes, "One and done" is enough. Let your imagination write your own vision(s).
They should have ended the film at “I’ll miss him” and fade to the memorial statue, the Hollywood ending ruins the significance of the Giant’s sacrifice.
Mary, this is YOUR BEST REACTION YET! The last 5 mins were awesome with you going thru every single emotion. I love this film, absolute classic 👌
what an emotional ride! love this movie!!! awesome reactions!!!
In the States, squirrels used to be kept as pets. They can recognize people that are nice to them as well.
Mary not all Squirrels are friendly, they'll bite when cornered the same as a rat, and urban squirrels are vicious, they eat KFC which makes them grow massive
I remember when this came out. I was amazed at the animation. Not so impressive today, what with modern photorealistic CGI, but still noteworthy.
It was my interpretation that the massive electrical shock the Giant got at the beginning gave him a sort of amnesia. He imprinted on what Hogarth told him and internalized it.
Nerd quibble: the USS Nautilus carried no missiles. The first SSBN was the USS George Washington, launched in 1959, a few years late for this story. Then again, it's a fairy tale, so what the heck. 😏
It's still pretty impressive, at least from a stylized standpoint rather than a technical one. The bit where the kid goes off on a coffee-fueled rant still looks fantastic
This story is a classic. Pete Townshend made a musical out of it and I'm pretty sure it is the motif of Queen's "News Of The World" cover.
The Iron Giant also comes out in Steven Spielbergs movie Player One. A movie about the future of gaming. This movie is a timeless classic.
16:33 "And that's why coffee's for grown-ups!"
High quality animated film from a different time! This film was one of the most under rated films during its time, but nowadays is very respected.
I love this movie SO much. The emotional scenes always wreck me.
So am I.
Another film in similar style from around the same time that I'd recommend is Titan A.E.
You'll enjoy this one.
I cherish Iron Giant
~Team Hogarth
Yep, it's a hidden gem. Directed by Brad Bird. He went on to direct The Incredibles.
It’s movies like this that really makes me appreciate animation
This movie is definitely one of my favourites from my childhood, it came out the same year as my sister was born (1999) and if LEGO would make a set of the Iron Giant itself, I would buy it instantly and I loved seeing him in Ready Player One 😊
If Mary ever watches the Transformers movies bet she'd be attached to Bumblebee, but Iron Giant hit the heart man, still an absolute gem
Finally 😭 this is my favourite film of all time
Me too.
Did you know squirrels can survive a fall from terminal velocity
Such a beautiful film ❤
‘I love cute robots!’
Mary, I sincerely encourage you to watch Bumblebee
Bumblebee might be a cute robot but that was an awful movie.
@@maraudentium2607 bit harsh, it wasn’t great but I enjoyed the bond betweeen Charlie and bumblebee and the action was great.
If you listen closely you can hear the Iron Giant whisper "Ride to Die" as he flys off to destroy the missile.
Hi Mary 🏖 This is actually a really good movie 😀Hope you enjoyed 🌺
I've always loved that the dent on Iron Giant's head suggests a reason that he's "not a gun" is from a trauma he received that changed his personality and perspective, and is the one element of his that he never reverts when he reassembles.
The film is loosely based on a children's book written by Ted Hughes to help his kids deal with the loss of their mother, Sylvia Plath. Hughes was wildly problematic but it's still a pretty poignant part of the origin. Bird had his own loss he was exploring in directing the film, and he weaved in the gun violence element which makes it a more mature and existential story.
I can still remember my dad coming home with this movie for us on VHS. I was only 4 years old but its so crisp in my mind. Ever since I have always loved this movie. I still have the vhs of this movie, ready to be played.
Mary: " when I was a kid I wouldn't even have the audacity"...
Me : "well Mary you live in the land of nopes.". So maybe that's not a good idea.
My mom recorded this movie for me I’ll never forget she pop a tape into the VHS and bam! the whole movie with commercials lol.
This is one of the best animated films, that few know about
Oh. Is that what we're doing today? Fuckin crying?
I dunno what it is about "a boy and his robot" stories, but this one gets me every time
You've got to take a peek back at your Ready Player One video and see the Iron Giant in action.
This movie was adapted from the children’s novel “The Iron Man”. The novel had a different story though, where the main antagonist was a space creature called the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon and was the size of Australia.
The Iron Man challenged the dragon to a feat of strength by seeing who could withstand the most heat and told the dragon to lie on the sun. In the end the Dragon lost by being burnt while the Iron Man only had a melted ear.
Upon it’s defeat, the Dragon went around the world and started singing which ended all conflicts around the world.
Man I cried so much as a little boy when IG remembered Hogarth say "you are who you choose to be" and then he said "Superman".
Its nostalgia for me. I missed this and it is one movie that I think I actively tried to watch as a kid. Glad you got to see it
Was my eldest son’s first movie theater movie, it’ll always hold a special place for me.
The greatest sci fi animation movie ever at the end of the 90s
You’re awesome. We love your channel, Mary🥂
I hope you remember The Iron Giant was in Ready Player One. It was an epic cameo.
A movie I highly recommend is the 1997 British comedy/drama 'The Full Monty'. A much loved classic.
