  • This Starry Night Polymer Clay Jewellery set is a spin on Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night painting. This is one of my favorite of his works and I thought that I would love to capture it in polymer clay.
    I created pendants in a full collar design in order to do justice to the panorama of the Starry Night.

    I'm new to clay but I'm learning a lot from watching your videos. I love how you leave in your "mistakes" and show us how to correct them. So many people edit things like that out. It's helpful for me for learning and for not getting discouraged when things don't turn out quite the way I wanted them to. Thank you!

    Little idea since drilling straight for that distance can be a pain and since you're layering black on as a backing: cut up some thin bar stock (you can find it at hardware stores, or just use the straight bits of a wire coat hanger) and lay that between the backing and front, then press it together. You won't be able to use the cutter to cut the backing this time, but since you already have the front bit, cutting shouldn't be that hard. Once cut, give it a little twist (might be best to lube it) to make sure it can be pulled free after curing the piece.

    Your design reminds me of Edvard Munch's paintings. It's amazing that your attractive necklace started out looking like play dough. It's an interesting process. I've never worked with those materials and have some questions. Do you have a video that shows the pasta machine, the oven you used and the products in the package that you used? And when you're heating the material, does it create a big odor in the house and is it safe for humans or animals to breathe or would I need to do this in a separate workshop? Do you use a safety mask when heating or working with these materials? Also, what is the estimate of how much this hobby costs for a beginner? Thank you for the lesson and information.😊

    Patience is definitely a virtue… This was so interesting to watch. The detailed steps created a gorgeous piece of jewelry….. I always ask, How does one keep from getting their fingers from getting cut, while working with your blades? I’ve had a tough go. Can you purchase them with sturdy handles on the sides

    • @JessamaTutorials
      @JessamaTutorials  Před rokem

      Thank you.
      In regards to the blades. It takes practice not to get nicked. When I first started, I used a relatively dull blade to help me get used to it without the risk of getting cut.
      You can buy blades with handles. I personally find them a little cumbersome, but they do work. www.sculpey.com/products/sculpey-super-slicer-set-w-comfort-handles

    Jessama, what happens if you have an uneven spot on your jewelry after you resin it? I'm sure that happens, where the resin doesn't entirely self level causing the piece to have more in one spot than another. What do you do when that happens? Do you just resand the piece?

  • @lizrichardson3309
    @lizrichardson3309 Před 6 lety +1

    Thank you for this tutorial. I love these colours and hope to be able to do this technique in different colours. I wondered, if you have textured the back, is it necessary to sand the back? I don't mind sanding, but if I can reduce the time I spend doing that, I'll have more time to make more beads! :-)

    • @JessamaTutorials
      @JessamaTutorials  Před 6 lety +1

      You don't have to sand the back if you've got a texture on the back. I like a slightly shiny texture on the back, but it looks great matte.

      I some times use Bake and Bond, but if I'm doing a smear around the edges of the bead I don't tend to use Bake and Bond as I find it makes it hard to work with the clay. It make the whole thing very slippery.

      I don't have a tutorial for that at the moment, but I do know of a few places where you might be able to find the tutorial your looking for.

    Is there any concern with using the wax and it getting on clothing? I’ve never used it before.

      I've used it for many years now and after a 24 hour drying period it's perfectly fine.

    hello: Could you tell me please why do you do the holes in the pieces, after baking?. Does there exist another way to do the holes before baking it?

      I find that it’s neatest to do the holes after baking. You can drill before baking, but the bead can get smooshed while doing it.

    Ugh, I am so terrible at apply resin. It rarely stays where I first applied it. It almost always pulls away from the sides and it destroys all my hard work. I get so anxious about this because I have health issues that only allow me to work a little at a time. I have been able to make nice beads but now they are just sitting * there because of my fear to apply the resin. Can you give me any insight on what could possibly be causing this problem? I have watched many of your videos and I thought I was doing it correctly. 🙁

      Are you using a two part resin like Ice Resin or a one part like Magic Gloss?
      It might be that your beads are clean before you put the resin on. Oil and things like that on the bead can repel the resin. If you don't have any surface effects that will rub out I'd recommend giving your beads a clean with a baby wipe before applying resin.
      Sanding your beads will also help removing oils that might repel resin.
      When you apply resin, sit with it a little while after applying and check for the resin pulling away from the edges. If it does, gently pull it back into place with a tooth pick. I like to stay in the same area as my resin until it's reached a thick honey consistence. By then it's so thick it won't pull away for the edges.I check it every five minutes or so until that point. It can take up to 40 minutes on a cold day for two part resin to reach that point.
      If you're using something like Magic Gloss, you might have to put on more than one coat as it seems to like pulling away for the edges of your beads.

      Jessama Tutorials I tried magic gloss and it is worse than two part resin. I was just thinking maybe I should let the two part resin sit for a bit so that it will become a tat thicker before I apply it? I will try to wipe the beads off with a wipe as you suggested though. Thnx

      That's a good idea. Let it set for around five minutes or so. Just don't leave it too long.

      Polymer clay is cured by baking at the recommend temperature on the packet. :D
