None of the countries function as communist or socialist are performing in the vision of Karl Marx's egalitarianism. People really need to have access to sociology courses. And if you really educate yourself and put aside the elitist views of functionalism and put on your reality sunglasses of conflict theory, people would see that Capitalistic Democracy, is infact not even real. In the US we live under End stage Capitalism Oligarchy, which is absolutely evil and disgusting. And people love to blame presidents for problems when it is actually the Judicial and Executive branches being manipulated by the rich to oppress the poor. But people don't want to learn and grow or feel uncomfortable so they just yell and scream covering their ears and throw words like socialism and communism around not understanding any of what they actually say.

In my social studies class, as teenagers we didn't understand why things like this happened in the world when there seemed to be such an obvious solution. We asked our teacher why other countries didn't just send them food. The answer was that some did, but it didn't do most of the people any good because all of it ended up going to the military and high-ranking people in the regime, even though they were already getting higher rations than the general population. That was one of my steps in learning that the adult world and the solutions to its problems wasn't as simple as it seemed to us on the surface.

You bring SUCH passion and energy to these recounts, Stephanie!!! Absolutely SUPERB. To give you an idea - I grew up in the USSR in the late 60s & the 70s. Our Pioneer Unit was sent on a "Friendship & Goodwill" tour of North Korea. We were SOVIET kids and WE got paranoid and spooked by North Korea. I remember one of my friends saying "This is how it must've been for our parents & grandparents during the Stalin days" - and our Unit Leader nodded & blew air out of his mouth with a "this is BIZARRE" look on his face. Literally the second our train crossed back into the USSR we all started hugging and laughing - and kids actually kissed the ground when we got off the train. In the USSR. Let that sink in. OH! There were 2 or 3 American soldiers who'd defected (!) across the DMZ and were huge stars in Korean films - they played the American bad guys. We saw 3 movies with them, and even got to meet one of them (James Dresnok) when we were taken on a tour of the film studios in Pyongyang.

Choi's career began to suffer after her divorce, and she traveled to Hong Kong in 1978 to meet with a person posing as a businessman who offered to set up a new film company with her. In Hong Kong, Choi was abducted and taken to North Korea by the order of Kim Jong-il. While searching for Choi after her abduction, Shin was also abducted and taken to North Korea soon after.
In North Korea, Choi and Shin were remarried, at Kim's recommendation. Kim had them make films together, including 1985's Salt, for which Choi won best actress at the 14th Moscow International Film Festival. Choi later said that the couple was able to make "films with artistic values, instead of just propaganda films extolling the regime," but that she could not forgive Kim for kidnapping her. While in North Korea, Choi converted to Roman Catholicism.

The Baader-Meinhof phenomenon applies when you suddenly notice a certain word or topic and it creates the illusion that it's coming up more frequently than usual, but it's actually not, you are just catching it more often.

I still haven't figured out if it's a good thing or a bad thing that they have no idea that people live differently than they do. It's all they all know. It's just so unfair, no one chose to be born there. Just the pick of the draw.. you happen to be born in this one small piece of land that happens to be the worst place on earth. If we lifted embargoes on N. Korea, it would benefit the people greatly. We've all recently learned a lot about collective punishment. This is what the West has done to the N. Korean people - punished them for their dictators. It's impossible to hold the N. Korean leaders responsible for their extreme human rights violations without diplomatic ties. N. Korean life will never change without a coup (which rarely goes well, obviously) or diplomacy. It's a difficult situation though because China is in the best position to make that happen and if they get too publicly close, the United States would absolutely explode with rage. Without a consensus among world superpowers on exactly how to move forward (and how likely is it that China, Russia, and US agree on anything at the same time?), any move could get the WWIII ball rolling reallyyyy fast. :( Basically the first move would have to be improving diplomatic relations between world superpowers which is the literally the biggest ask imaginable. It's a devastating reality...

Edit: wasn't trying to get clout or likes for this comment but since it's had more interaction than expected...
I was just expressing my current concern for Stephanie's mental wellbeing because it seems to me, a viewer, like she's diving into a lot of upsetting topics very quickly. I could be totally wrong, and she could have just pre-recorded a bunch of these videos and is just releasing them at a rapid-fire pace. I understand the frustration about feeling like victims aren't seen, or heard, or respected enough. Please try to understand that I don't care about the creator more than the victims. The victims and survivors who these events actually happened to is real life and not just a story to be passively consumed. I know that. I also know that I can opt out of watching these videos, but Stephanie will continue to make them, research topics, and write scripts. That can't be good on her mental health. And now we've come full circle; I was introduced to your channel from the Kim/CZcams "prank" video and now that I'm finally subbed, you fill in all the details about this famous kidnapping that I only knew part of and tie it together with the CZcamsrs.. Amazing work, Team Mango 🥭

being kidnapped period is terrifying.... I was held for 9 days and forced to do horrible things and had to allow people do things to me or else they beat me or drugged me! I am lucky to be alive and "free", I guess. The trauma around it is still with me 7 years later which is like prison at times. And this woman was being given extravagant beautiful expensive things to keep her happy but she still hated it....
*edit- (because some people aren't understanding what I am saying) when I said "she was given nice things and she still hated it". I mean it doesn't matter if your in a physically or mentally abusive situation or they treat you like gold - Kidnapped and held against your will is kidnapped and held against your will! It doesn't matter how different they can be they are all not right and horrible to experience. NOBODY has the right to control someone to hold anyone against their will. I hope this ends the ugly talk in the comment section. IDK why anyone would think I insinuated that she should like it because she's being spoiled, that's just sick! I was a victim myself WTH is wrong with some of you?

First of all sympathise with you... But
Being kidnapped isn't fun matter who you are, and you should know that. Just because she was given luxuries as a bribe to behave, that doesn't mean she didn't suffer heavily, money doesn't equate to happiness IN MOST situations, she lived in fear every second of every day. Just because she didn't go through what you went through, that doesn't mean she wasn't traumatised for the rest of her life.
Please don't contribute to the toxic mentality of ' If people didn't go through what I went through they can't/aren't etc etc'.
Again I sympathise with you and what you went through, but you're going about it the wrong way.

I believe she means exactly that. That no matter how you are treated just the kidnapping in itself is already traumatizing. @@Princess-Ammonite

    • @Fluffy-Fluffy
      @Fluffy-Fluffy Před 2 měsíci +11

@@Princess-AmmoniteI give the benefit of the doubt because they said that being kidnapped is terrifying period. And that they meant that it does not matter how well you are treated when you're kidnapped, it will be traumatic as shown in this instance where they got so many nice things.
I think it was just unlucky and confusing way of saying "nothing can make a kidnapping not be traumatic". I hope that's what they meant and not what you took from it, which granted, I thought at first too but then it doesn't fit the first sentence about 'being kidnapped is terrifying period'.

@@thisisausername.595 I'm annoyed because the Op is saying "And this woman was being given extravagant beautiful expensive things to keep her happy but she still hated it..."
It's like the Op is acting like the actress should have enjoyed being kidnapped against her will, living in fear, and risking her life to escape. All because she was given material things. Just saying.

My parents used stress potions on us and we had to stay like that for hours and I remember my toes would always hurt and always be sore because of they’re favorite potion to put us in, it was so hard to walk, my siblings and I’d be would crawl everywhere in the house because it hurt much less.
They only stopped when my grandma finally found something to get them to stop. I’m not sure how accurate this is but she came over with a news paper and she showed it to them and I remember her saying “it’s illegal in prisons, imagine what CPS would do if they found out your using punishments they were deemed so inhumane that it’s illegal in prison”
So they actually stopped and that was a big day of celebration for my siblings and i, it really is inhumane and cruel.
