Bosca Ceoil Blue - Stupidly Simple Music Creation - Now Created with Godot!

- Bosca Ceoil is a somewhat famous application for easily creating music by simply drawing notes written by Terry Cavanagh (VVVVV, Super Hexegon, Dicey Dungeons and more). It is an excellent tool for creating music quickly, especially for game jams. Unfortunately it's also written in Flash which... has certainly had it's best days behind it.
Thankfully, and with the blessing of Terry, Bosca Ceoil Blue is now available for Windows, Mac and Linux. Written by former Godot maintainer Yuri Sizov, using the Godot game engine and it's fully open source.

First Brackeys made a return, switched to Godot and now Bosca Ceoil is on Godot, it's all coming together. I learned about it from Brackeys back in the day and absolutely loved it.
Agreed. My main gripe with OG Bosca was that it was way too easy to lose work, as well as overall jank. That's why I got 1BITDRAGON which is kinda similar in idea to Bosca. But Blue has fixed the problems I had with it. Much harder to lose your work by accident and it's way less janky (it's still janky, but much less so).
Musicfromscratch
end result is more akin to music from scratching. On a blackboard. With nails.
While I can't, won't and don't want to comment on the track made in this video, it still looks like a really cool and simple to use software.
My ears....
Zie goggles do notzing.
I always think he's joking when he says it'll make my ears bleed, but it's not a joke at all. I'm gonna have to see a doctor now
"Beginnings of a Banger of a song!" 🤣🤣🤣👌🏼
Cool. Then all I need is music lessons. Lots and lots of music lessons!
Like drawing, it gets better with practice. Lessons help too, but mostly practice.
Truly your masterpiece work🤌
What a coincidence! I literally just yesterday heard Da Fluffy Potato talk about using it for his games, and so I was checking it out yesterday. Perfect timing!
Hi Mike, I am simply blown away by your music production skills!
Didn't expect to see Gaeilge/ Irish here of all places.
Bosca Ceoil = Music Box
You're pretty close with your pronunciation.
i NEW it was only a matter of time until someone makes a DAW in godot!!!! theres so many demo projects like a synthesizer, midi player, midi visualiser, midi input, waveform visualisers, that all you need to do is stitch them together and make yourself a good old DAW.
For the record, Bosca Ceoil Blue is made with a completely custom software synthesizer (created as a GDExtension, also open source) :) It's important to make the new version sound exactly like the old one. But it does, of course, hook into Godot's audio server and streams for playback.
Check out Blockhead by Colugo.
I'm pretty sure VSTs are C++, and since Godot supports C++, it might be possible to make a wrapper.
@@chrismcpherson7582 Yes, it's totally possible to integrate VSTs into Godot! All you need from Godot is support for a generated audio stream, and it has that (and that's what Bosca Ceoil Blue and its synth rely on).
The only limitation right now is that audio in Godot 4 has issues on web, and unfortunately the workaround that comes with 4.3 is specifically not applicable to generated audio streams. But that may be too niche for general VST integration.
@@chrismcpherson7582 yeah the popular VST frameworks are in c++ so that should be totally viable. at least for 99% of them.
Been a subscriber for years, thanks for all the awesome content you put out. It can be hard to keep up with all the different game development software and updates, you make it much easier to keep track of things.
Thanks Yuri!!! hope you are doing good.
Came because of the cool program news, CAME because of the greatness of the track
you cannot stop me from calling it Bosca C-oli
Surprisingly, compared to your previous masterpieces, it was much better!
Love this.
It looks simple and approachable. I already cannot think in music, I don't want to learn 50000 rules of how to use the tools before being able to do what was demonstrated in the video. This is a great starting point for people like me.
Love it.
Nice one, very easy and intuitive.
Bro put every note in a different octave😂
It's jazz, you wouldn't understand ;)
@@karidyas00 😂
I'd never heard of this tool! The name is awesome!
downloaded this 5 years ago when you made that video :)
This reminds me of a midi program that came with some of the Turtle Beach soundcards back in the day, but more advanced. Very cool.
This is Awesome!!
Bus-ka Key-oh-ill 👍🏻
What a coincidence! I started to sample it some days ago for my samples collection
That song was faaayaaa!🔥🔥 Release it on Spotify lol
The return of Music Mike. XD
Dat music is a masterpiece
Your composition sounds like the music you might hear in an old, NES style. (J)RPG, late-game dungeon.
03:59 A Masterpiece 😁😂
master piece of sh1t 😂
Thank you
masterpiece music
Awesome
I made a song with this software, it's the most recent one on my channel. It's quite nice to use, facilitates a lot of the life of who's new to making music (like me). I'm also quite proud of what I did with it. I need to try it again sometime...
I've heard worse in the charts.
Better than foliage ;-)
Take a look at Light Brush please? Many things updated since your last time covering it. Thank you for consideration!
I actually made a song in this software and I'm quite proud of what I did.
Upload it, might sound good
@@stevenstokes6306 I actually did, but it is on my music focused channel. If you search for "Raziel - Subject-01" you'll find it. I also commented here on my Raziel profile, you can search there too. I just won't post the link here because CZcams might take it down.
@4:30 actually sounds like Secret of Mana boss music
"...especially if you are not musically inclined!"
Mike: Challenge accepted.
Also, Mike: 4:29, 4:54
🤣 I swear, Mike. You are the last boss of "easy" music creating software
Change the context though, what you made right there can be a great boss battle theme!
4:29 Absolute masterpiece!
Anyway, this is a really good tool to make 8-bit style music. Super easy to use and it's free!
We are so back baby!!!
Anybody knows where are the notes with a flat?
Im trying to understand the circle of the fifth but im kinda lost due to that
This is nice but Beepbox/Jummbox is all you need for a while
One more major feature for today's standard art software is that need an auto saves, and some tooltips. Since it can gain more users with good enough info inside the app, good for plebs who no idea to make music like me. xd
Think Busca Kyo - elle. :)
Challenge accepted... Let's see, if I can make a track out of first drawn midi...
Damn, this song is your magnum opus! 😂
I thought Bosca Ceoil was made using Adobe Air, which if I recall correctly is not flash
It's made with ActionScript 3, if you want to be specific, and Adobe AIR is basically runtime for Flash apps made with AS3 for desktop. So the original app was distributed using Adobe AIR for desktop platforms. But that platform, just like Flash, is EOL. Adobe dropped it and it's now supported by HARMAN. You can make it work, but bug reports tell a pretty grim story for people trying to run the OG Bosca on macOS, and it's a nuisance on Linux too.
@@YuriSizov I was unaware that Adobe Air was related to Flash, I did however know that it was EOL thank you for the information. I haven't even tried to run Bosca Ceoil on anything Linux based (which I do use heavily), I guess that was a good decision though...
Very cool!
Lol at "bosca..... whatever"
I'm super glad Godot is the new Flash. Let's un-Adobe-fy the planet.
It's not a faithful port until hitting escape quits the application
It actually does, like a faithful port should! But there is also a guardrail now :P
My reward are like -1hp... -1hp... -2hp
Seriously, though, this is great!
4:55 seems there is nothing a reverb and bunch of eq can't fix
So this is a stripped back version of Fruity Loops/FL Studio. Seems kind of cool, but if you can't replace the samples with your own, you won't really be able to get anything that sounds good out of it.
what do you mean? I'm new to music production so I would like to know.
Bosca Seoul
I meant reply plzzzzz first here always wait for ur vids apart from times when am in hospital tho am here
Boss-Ka Kyo-al
bus-ka key-oh-ill
I made a more advanced step sequencer in Godot that I just abandoned 😅
I read "instrumeat"
actually
Limping steps!
Don't give up your day job
there need not be any new easy game music creators because I keep getting distracted from learning lmms 😭
Beethoven who?
Well, is this what we really need? LMMS, the beginner-friendly DAW, already exists.
1). Does it support VST2/VST3?
2). Does it support microtonality?
3). Does it have presets and samples which aren't limited by "retro" sound? E.g. drum beats?
4). Does it support sidechain and automatisation?
Like these features aren't perfect in LMMS, but at least they're existent.
This is not meant to be the most powerful music software for actual musicians; it's meant to provide an easy to use interface for programmers/artists to make simple music for their games
One thing exists, therefore no one else can make other similar things ever.
So sayeth the lord.
@@kodingamedev there can't be something simpler than pianoroll, which exists in 99% of DAWs, including LMMS and Ardour. Then you want to have some nice features, you'll regret wasting time on "lightweight" software, because you have to learn interface and workflow twice. As amateur guy I strictly recommend to take anything more serious than this programmer toy. Simplicity doesn't mean lack of features. That's perverted way of thinking, common to posers that use dwm, suckless utilities, vim and other dung.
@@honaleri the fool does invent the wheel, the wise man does upgrade the old one.
If that's what you need, you have LMMS indeed! But despite being over 10 years old OG Bosca Ceoil is still one of the most popular free tools in the indie gamedev world. So to me that says that many many people actually need a tool in this specific niche. And, well, I didn't really work on the port to appease anyone. I personally loved Bosca Ceoil (and I also used LMMS and didn't love it nearly as much, it's a very complex tool in comparison). And I personally thought it deserved to be preserved. And so I did just that, I preserved it. That's pretty much it :)
i hate jazz but i like this
I get the "I'll make your ears bleed" gag, but at least make the effort to get better. You don't want to be _that guy_ when you're retired from YT.
Having that said, that track was surprisingly good and musical.
not me calling bosa cells this whole time 🙄
Cool, but LMMS exists.
You wouldn't make it as a musician. :)
That app really needs a better color pallete
Hahaha I love how terrible you are at making music. But thanks, I'll try to make something better 😊
Honestly i dont get the hype. Its a horrible UI with incredibly unintuitive controls.
Just use LMMS or Ardour, not this toy, which is definitely made for experiment and isn't going to become anything serious.
a horror music game by @Gamefromscratch
😂 psychological horror themed cause it messes up your friggin thought process lol 😆
