  • I recently discovered that my Royal Enfield Classic motorcycle had an uneven chain slack. I was trying to adjust my chain when I found that the chain tension varied on different places of the chain as I turned the wheel. There are several reasons that can cause this problem. In this video I show how to identify the correct course and how to fix it. The cause was unexpected!

@MotoMortan so after 15000km I took my classic reborn for 4th service I was told my chain has this loose tight issue. It was tough to find any such video on CZcams that could explain the issue and it's fix. Thanks to you now atleast I know how and what to investigate

In my case the sprocket is ok but chain seems to have stretched only slightly I think. For now I have to do more frequent chain tightening but it's doable. I will probably think of a replacement maybe around next servicing which is at 20k

@MotoMorten now after almost 18500km and chain tightening, I have reached almost the last mark beyond which I cannot tighten it further . I talked to RE service engineer and they told I will have to get the entire kit replaced which is front sprocket, rear sprocket and chain along with any seals that come, so this is full chain kit they said. Roughly around $40 here in India including service charges.
So now I am thinking if I have to change then I will probably go with brass performance chain, I am not able to find any X ring so I will go with rolon brass O ring chain kit.

that is amazing (and cool music too)
It makes sense: the sprockets and the chain are not in phase (to even out wear). Its 1 am and I had to try it out. In my case it was defintely the chain itself that causes uneven tension.
    Thank you.

This helped a lot to determine it’s not the chain. But what is the next step to fix the issue if it’s rear sprocket or front sprocket. Is it just to replace either one or clean I’m unsure hard to see the issue on from sprocket that u show. To me it looks like it is turning lol I’m. We at riding and just wanna make sure I’m doing everything correct ya knw. It’s a new chain and sprocket kit maybe 1-2 months old vortex

Rotate the rear wheel once. If you get just one tight spot, then it's likely the rear sprocket. If you get multiple tight spots, then it's likely the front. If it's the front, then the number of tight spots should be roughly equal to the front / rear tooth count ratio. For example if the ratio is 4:1 then a front sprocket problem should give 4 tight spots.
