- How to Install Valve Springs, Retainers, Valve Seals, and Keepers. This is definitely not a first-ever type of process, but it is an important step in assembling a cylinder head properly. Lapping valves properly and keeping everything clean through the process will help ensure that your valves seal properly. Leaky valves equal lower compression or even destruction. Leaky oil seals also lead to unwanted blue smoke out the tailpipe. Keep those valve guides very clean and drop the valves in with light oil. Lube the tips of the valve stems when installing the seals or installing the valves through the seals.
