Magura HS33 Set Up : Everything You Ever Needed To Know

- Brakes are one of the most important part of a trials bike, without good brakes it becomes very difficult to perform most techniques needed and is also very dangerous, often our lives depend on our brakes!
One of the most popular brakes for trials riding is the Magura HS33, it's a hydraulic rim brake which has had a few changes over the years but one of the more popular versions was the 2005-2011 model (before they used the carbotecture material) but most of the advice given in this video will translate onto other years.
It's a long video but Adam gave such great advice I decided to keep pretty much all of it in, we talk about cutting hose, fitting barbs, bleeding, clamp setup and hints and tips on how to get the 2005 lever running sweet.

Dude, you‘re a lifesaver. I followed the official Magura bleed instructions and had ZERO stopping power. System was full, no bubbles. But your trick with attaching a syringe to the master cylinder and pushing out all the air (was a shitload of air inside) was the thing that saved the day. I don’t understand why they didn’t include that in the official video. Cheers!
Gotta love the "you don't need to replace it, just do this little thing and it's sorted" -mentality. A nice lesson actually.
This series is a great insight into professional bike building/maintenance, and Tartybike are just the best, so much experience!
Spent an evening with my mate setting up my brakes after both of us watched your video. I'm back riding trials after ten years or so and never thought maguras could feel this good. Watching in 2021 I used to have hs33, the knowledge and tricks he shows is a pleasure to watch. Id like to see the same in depth video for the MT7's, how to change the levers, cable etc.

Can't believe those newer versions of the HS33s came out so long ago now. I remember the version before with the adjuster that broke even easier but could be replaced by just screwing a bolt in there. Loving these videos, so much nostalgia.

Ali - That is truly everything you ever need to know about Magua HS33 Set Up! Wow - lots of info. Now it makes sense why you had to break the TartyBikes adventure day into multiple videos. I would not be surprised if Tarty wanted to add this to their tutorial videos. Very good.

I just got a used bike here in Texas, and was pleasantly surprised to hear that the Jitsie wheels were built in the Tarty Bikes shop! It also has one of their chainstay protectors, so I can advertise a little bit. Great video, Ali and Tarty Bikes! Now I want to go tackle my sticky HS33's!

things are slowly being sorted out.. for a long moment YT was overtaken by all kinds of dudes w/ very little insight into what they are doing just fighting for views/revenue.
*my all time fav example was this guy on top of the search on 'how to replace a motorcycle tire'. lots of subscribers, nice garage, nice cameras, etc.... at one point he says that was his first attempt to changing a tire, ever. damaged the rim aesthetically, damaged the tire to the point that it needed to be replaced but the 'how to' video brought in viewers, so... :}
An awesome video. Tarty Bikes could easily do an entire series on trials bike tech and it would be invaluable.

Thanks for the video, I learned a lot. I think those aluminium brake clamps with the slots are your backward slipping issue. Those slots will flex, plus the bolts are very small. I would have a machinist make custom clamps for that particular setup out of steel or ti, with holes rather than slots. You will have to measure for the hole placement. Or you could cut down a washer to fill the slot, with the hole in the right place. This would spread the load from the bolt head. Larger bolts would help too.

Never had the freezing problem in the past but...I had one pop on me (for the water expanding) in the summer riding the Wessex competition that Andre Burton setup. I'd not long come out of my cast after doing my ankle in...not long after you did yours actually (I don't know if you'll remeber) I think you were riding yaabaa at the time. I was riding a hifi then!

they sell liquid rosin soldering flux, biodegradable + non-clean (so it's not active/corrosive at room temp). the one w/ the brush applicator is more viscous than the 'drip bottle'.. it's super easy/fast to apply and it's quite sticky after it dries out; it's basically "violin rosin" w/ some solvent carrier that evaporates.
it used to work ok in wet conditions with old school chrome rims on city bikes. those bikes would practically lose ALL braking power w/ the first drop of rain, so i imagine some ground up rims would get glued to the pads.. the flux itself is not messy and it smells fabulous but it definitely attracts all kinds of dust.
This is great. I never get my magura's to grab like those of a pro.
Ali, could you do a video on all of the different types of Magura brake pads ? Back in the day I only used the soft Magura pads but it seems there are custom pads nowadays. Again back in the day I remember trying the brake on my mates Megamo which had Monty pads which felt really sticky. Why don't they make pads longer than the custom metal-backed pads and How' do you make these custom pads. Many thanks

Hello. Great video, especially the spoke part for the hoses. Can I ask, do I have to use specific Magura hoses. I have restored my Cannondale Super V 1000, and yesterday rebuilt the brakes, but O just used a random old hose, they do work, but I suspect the brakes are leaking where I have bridged the calipers. The hose I used has the black outer sleeve and a white lining. Could this be the problem. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The newer Version of HS has about the same thing but you only need one screw to loosen and turn the Plastik lever to get it in or out. Then fasten the screw and done =)
But alway nice to see somebody with real technique working.
I would expect the speed with which the brakes open back up is mainly depending on the stiffness of the spring that pushes the break lever out, more than on the viscosity of the fluid.
there are some interesting parts, such as the block which was used in the vice clamp, to hold on to the brake hose while the barb was hammered in. Is that something available commercially?
Ali which brake do you recommend to a bike that just can get road rim brakes? And ceramic or not?

Great video Ali, absolutely no use to me, don't do anything Trials, but I'm sure it'll be super useful to all those who do ride Trials, especially those new, on a budget buying used stuff that needs a bit of TLC.

Top tips!
If not V-brake I'd recommend you to replace this 2-finger lever to Trialtech Sport. For me it's better/stronger than the 4-finger Magura lever.
I notice that you didn't put a barb in at 10:20. Only an olive and shroud nut, is a barb not necessary because it's low pressure? I've only dealt with avid disc brakes where there is a barb that you thread in and then screw an olive on that with a L/H thread?
what's the name of the hydraulic fluid you're using ?
In 4:25 you show this "gold bit" can I take this off and put on the new cable? If so how to to this since its diameter is shorter then the brakes tube?
You should have went for the koxx browns. Hands down the best brake I've ever had was koxx browns on my St Blaise with no booster

It’s a specific magura 4-bolt clamp. A few brands have their own versions…check out www.tartybikes.co.uk as they have a few in stock

@Matt man as I said, I don't think you understand the context. Ali's videos are great and I've been subscribed for years. One of his previous videos was of him riding this bike and complaining that the brakes were crap and that he was going to ditch them. Then this video pops up, so I and others assumed this was about a fix to address the issues he was complaining about, but this video was recorded before his previous video, so it was not about that. SO after everything in this video, Ali is still going to ditch these brakes. That is all that is being said here. I've had some HS33s in the past and didn't have any issue with them.

I have HS33s and they are always rusty: screws, brackets, clippers. Do you know someone who makes them in aluminum?

Just bled my HS-33s with antifreeze...wish I had known this 25 years ago!
What type?
@@srboskovic Regular old automotive green antifreeze, undiluted. You can dump the whole gallon in a dish tub and submerge the entire brake system, zero bubbles! Kind of messy but so is using the syringes.
best thing to do is put a 2 pence piece between the pad and the rim , aslong as the wheel is true it will bite perfect and shouldnt rub . try and get jack carthy in a video ali hes just started his own youtube chanell a few weeks ago it would make an interesting vid]
Why not put in some piss thin hydraulic oil?
Like VW/AUDI spec power steering fluid?
If you would pour in hydraulic oil a system runing on regular brake fluid (diethelene glycol) then the seals would all swell up, in reverse im guessing its the same thing.
I looked up some seal compatibility and NBR seals used for mineral oil are not suted to glycol based fluids, same for epdm seals designed for glycol based fluds dont work with mineral oils.

Wtf? Why don't you have disk brakes? I ride bmx and I'm brakeless because a slight buckle in the rim brake makes your bike unridable.. how do you get around that?
