The Witcher 3 Did Something Incredible

  • I played the Witcher 3 for the first time 2 years ago. I was at a friend’s house and they had just purchased it for their Xbox one and were playing it on their little 22 inch TV in the corner of their bedroom. As I watched my friend play through the Bloody Baron questline I found myself fascinated. This was both a game that had her frantically trying to manage the combat, crafting, and magic systems while also engaging both of us in its branching narrative. We had only been sitting there for 10 minutes, but I was already hooked and engaged in the story to the point where all I wanted was more. I had tasted the forbidden fruit and knew I had to experience this game for myself. So I purchased the Witcher 3 on Steam and began to play through it. And I quickly realized, the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had done something incredible.

      YES THIS!!!! Soundtrack must be the one thing noone gives a shit about cause games - visuals and gameplay, right...
      But truth is, the soundtrack is what really makes you feel a game, and the witcher 3 in my honest opinion, is from another world, i've downloaded a bunch of those osts just to have that feeling, and the fact that each track makes the sensation completely different
      You hear the swamp music, you FEEL crookback bog, you hear the city music, you feel novigrad, you hear the Kaer Trolde ost, you can FEEL the heat of Crach's fireplace in the middle of those mountains, and the snow falling, ans the way it was recorded, so much passion, each place with it's own sensation
      It is totally outstanding, glad to know someone agrees

      Imperialx Warlord I played Skyrim for years and loved it religiously. Every once in a while I would hear people taking about the Witcher 3, but I just decided that I probably wouldnt like it. I was so wrong!!! I recently finished my first play through and I’m already like halfway through my second. It was only until I played this game that I realized how much Skyrim did wrong. The Witcher universe feels so alive and real, the combat isn’t dry and repetitive, I genuinely care about ability points, alchemy, signs. This game is just so perfect, I’m in love with the characters, Geralt is such a cool protagonist. Never knew I would be so passionate about a game. I thought I loved Skyrim, but wow, Witcher 3 is just something else

    The witcher 3 is a good game because it made you into Geralt. This is extremely rare since most rpg these days let you create your own character. But starting off as a the main character and feeling like you're him? That's old school story telling at its finest. The sensation that you're feeling can be comparable to reading a good book, or being read to as a kid. The game also tackles how humanity act at its weakest and ugliest point, examples are the Baron's quests, and Fyke's Tower quest. There will be time where you have to make a decision to choose the lesser evil, which one is the lesser? Completely up to you to decide. Free the tree spirit? Or let the children get eaten so you can save Hannah.
    And as you continue on the path to kill monsters, you'll start to ponder who's the real monster. Wraiths only appear when there's an unfulfilled task left behind by someone who died violently, botchlings are created when a still fetus is bury without a proper funeral, and the eternal fire cult is on a hunt for a scapegoat. It was human that created witchers in the first place to hunt monsters, yet as time goes by human started calling them freaks and monsters. All of those things are thrown at you as you look for Ciri and trying to keep the world from freezing over. And at the end of the day, people will still treat you the same even after you saved their world. This is call life.

    • @bloodwolf9428
      @bloodwolf9428 Před 6 lety +35

      yeah exactly.. Man, this game shows the brutality of humankind. The reality of our world even. Then when they start showing the other worlds with Avallach and how he talks about all worlds will eventually die without water and then the white frost then you think about global warming, Drought as lots of countries now struggle without water and also about ice ages^^..
      Also the emotional turmoil in quests. Even if you remove the game play the story and lore alone can beat stuff like GOT and other incredible stories

      GREG E3 EGG Cyberpunk is based a little less on incredible story, although it still has one, and from what we've seen so far, it seems pretty good, and more on its combat system. It will also put you at conflicts, but probably different ones. The Witcher had conflicts like racism, war and scapegoating. Cyberpunk is probably going to have conflicts more about violence and substance abuse. But no matter what, from the gameplay demo you can clearly see it feels really realistic.

      John Lee To put it simply, it did everything other RPG's have been trying to do for years, and did them better than they have ever been done before. It has an absolutely massive, beautiful World that is absolutely filled with content. The attention to detail in every aspect of its design is unmatched in gaming, and the world feels organic and real. The story and characters are what really put it ahead of everything else though. Every Character, no matter how little of a role they actually play, seem like real people, with unique appearances, voices and mannerisms. The Story for each quest, including the many sidequests, are all exceptionally interesting and unique, this isn't a game where a farmer will offer you 10 gold pieces to herd his sheep for him, or to slay 5 lizards. Each quest is like a self contained episode for a show. I could really go on but suffice to say this game is the best RPG I have ever played, and it isn't even close.

    Even in 2019, playing through The Witcher 3 is an absolute pleasure. In other games I find myself skipping dialogue, in this one I am constantly finding new details to appreciate in everything from the different textures to the detail of each characters face. The world feels like it's alive and breathing, I literally can't help but play for five hours or more whenever I open this game. No other game makes time fly by like this one. I sit down promising myself I would only play one quest and five hours flies by. I have heard that CDProjekt Red is working on a new open world RPG for release in 2021. I hope that is true. The only other games that came close to the escape that The Witcher offers was the Mass Effect series but for now all I can do is replay Witcher 3..

Blood and wine then raised its head and BOOM stunning world , beautiful to behold and the main quest was huge , it could have been a game itself . I honestly think it’s the best game created. It’s got everything, be prepared to lose months and months with this game especially if you get the GOTY edition with everything on it , I’m doing my 3rd go of it after buying a lovely 4K tv and upgraded to the X box 1 X game took on this much sharper look with better textures and overall gorgeousness it didn’t have on my day 1 Xbox fat , your gaming ‘career ‘ isn’t complete till you delve into this world , enjoy people, I’m jealous of those who haven’t played it yet , jaws will hit floors !!!!!

    To me Skyrim's open world and The Witcher 3's open world feel very different. In Skyrim I feel driven to explore purely for the sense of discovery that each new spectacular vista and town brings. By contrast, the witcher 3's world is generally much more subdued and grim (though no less breathtaking, just not in the same way as Skyrim), and so the driving force for exploration is to discover new interesting quests. The witcher 3's quest writing is absolutely unmatched. I have never encountered a game where even insignificant characters feel so alive and believable. I was even floored by how many random merchants with no side quests whatsoever are given absolutely unique personalities, especially in Blood and Wine.

    • @lightsidemaster
      @lightsidemaster Před 6 lety

      Good points. If I would try to sum it up the main quest story in TW3 is quite a lot better and has you greater invested in it than the story in Skyrim, but the world seems just a tad deeper and richer in Skyrim.
      When I was exploring EVERYTHING in Velen, I was done extremely fast even though I even checked under water for secret caves or treasures.
      It did feel a bit shallow and empty.
      So there are still points these two games could take from each other to get EVEN better.
      Both games are ok, but really not magnificent when it comes to gameplay.
      Gameplay in the realms of "Nioh" would be a lot better.
      Nioh and not Dark Souls because the gameplay in the Souls games is rather slow.

    • @CampingforCool41
      @CampingforCool41 Před 6 lety +14

      I wouldn't say that the Witcher 3's world felt shallow and empty (by contrast I find it to be very alive), but that it is much more grounded and realistic than Skyrim's world. For some this is a drawback, but if you are trying to create a grounded fantasy world, placing dungeons and caves every five feet is probably something you shouldn't do. So in that sense, Witcher 3's world is exactly what it needs to be. The world is a medium to support the narrative. I would have liked to have seen them leave at least SOME large secrets unmarked by the question marks on the map though rather than telling you where virtually every hidden treasure is. It would make finding treasures feel more exciting and organic rather than a chore.

    • @135792183
      @135792183 Před 6 lety +7

      lightsidemaster if you think witcher 3 feels shallow and empty then you didnt pay attention to the details, which are very consistant and well done, you walk through a village and villagers dont speak the same lines they arent all doing the same exact things, everyone and everyplace in the environment has a purpose, whereas skyrims ai purpose are to make you feel less lonely (they're ingame schedules dont make sense or seem like they're people they're just robots doing the same things over and over)

    • @JaM-R2TR4
      @JaM-R2TR4 Před 6 lety +2

      yeah, questionmarks on map are the single big mistake in W3... game would be a lot better without them I even play with them turned off, but after 5-6 playthroughts, you know where everything is already... If they were turned off by default, i bet a lot of players would find new ones even today...

    • @lilrizq
      @lilrizq Před 6 lety

      My only gripe with The Witcher 3 is that most of the NPCs are just there for decoration and don't have much to say when you talk to them except "Nordling". You can only overhear conversations like in ME games and you can only talk to people who have a quest for you. But where TW3 makes up for that flaw at is in how they make those quest(even the non- story quest) feel important, so I can forgive that flaw.
      I feel like TW3's open world design has more in common with GTA games then Skyrim in that aspect. In bethesda games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls not only can you overhear conversations but you can damn near talk to everybody you see unless they are merchants trying to sell you something or bandits/raiders trying to kill you, lol. So I agree with @lightsidemaster on the whole Skyrim and TW3 taking points from each other to become better RPGs.
      If yall like JRPGs, deep story telling and world building games, yall should also try playing some of the Legends Of Heroes series as well. Love those games :)

    Just be warned, this game will ruin you! After I finished it, all I could think about was playing it again bc no other game really comes close in my opinion. I even bought a ps4 pro to play the exclusives I never had before like Uncharted 4, Until Dawn, and Horizon: Zero Dawn. (All were great games in there own way, and Horizon may actually have the best graphics I've ever seen in 4k, with awesome combat & storyline,) but it still felt like something was missing. There's a void left in me that no game has filled yet since The Witcher 3 (except for its amazing DLC's which almost felt like there own games, especially Blood & Wine.) So now luckily, enough time has passed that I'm able to enjoy different types of games again, but there's still a Witcher shaped hole in my gamer heart. (And the only cure is more cowbell... Jk) But I do hope CDPR either nails it with cyberpunk, or surprises the world with a new Witcher game soon. So heed my warning & play at your own risk!

    Something that I love and he doesn't mention is the fact nearly every single quest is actually intriguing and/or has an unexpected twist. Even the lowest of the lowest sidequest, where you hop around the place doing fisticuff, had me in stitches when they make you face a bear and Geralt just says "oh shit...". Or investigating creepy bellows in a crypt, expecting some strong wraight mob, only to end up resolving postmortem marital issues. They never let up and thus I was always excited for the next sidequest. That in itself is also incredible.

    Witcher 3 is one of those games where EVERYONE needs to play, even though ironically, it's not meant to appeal to everyone. Its content, gameplay and overall game design is actually somewhat niche, yet it's mainstream. If there's one thing I have to complain about and this is me being nitpicky as hell as an old-school RPG gamer, is the lack of Character Customization and development. Then again, Geralt is a predetermined character with a predetermine backstory and personality with an entire saga of novels to back it up. Can't really do much without deviating from the source material.
    That being said, the choices you make as well as the dialogue in the Witcher games is more or less what Geralt would actually do/say in the Witcher Novels. Cyberpunk 2077, on the other hand, is a completely different story since the game has a HEAVY emphasis on Character Customization and development. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if you could completely generate your character's backstory similar to the Mount & Blade games. CD Projekt made something spectacular with the Witcher games and that's not including their stance on DRM, DLC and their loyalty to their fanbase. CD Projekt is what the industry as a whole deperately needs and I hope other developer follow as well.

      But that still made a better overall game compared to The Witcher 3 where the focuses were too spread out. They should have made The Witcher 3 more of a linear game like the first two and focused on more of it's narrative and developing it's combat mechanics among other things. I truly believe the game could have truly been something special if CD Projekt Red didn't try to make it an open world.

It actually used AI rules to interpret the audio recordings and reference a structured library of character motions and film production rules to automate a significant portion of the game's cinematics. Artists then went in and tweaked a few parts and created hand-crafted animations for key areas.

    I avoided the witcher 3 for a long time because im very picky when it comes to the games i like to play. I typically like to play open world rpgs that allow you to create and customize my own character. I just find myself getting immersed in a world more when the character i play is one of my own creation. So anyway i kept hearing from friends and people on youtube about how awesome the witcher 3 was. Even my own brother told me that he liked it almost as much as skyrim. So i bought it and downloaded the goty edition or whatever its called with all the dlc and started playing. Immediately i was sucked into the world and just found myself getting lost in it for hours at a time. And ya you dont get to create your own character but theres so many different armor types and weapons to choose from and i really enjoyed questing for new items and doing treasure hunts which made the immersion even better. I always play all my games on the hardest difficulty possible because i like a challenge and it makes the games more interesting when you actually have to try n figure out how to beat ypur opponents. I died so many times in the beginning i loved how challenging each fight was and how there were different ways to take down each different type of monster its just amazing. But for me even better than the things i listed already was the story line and side quests. Omg every sidequest just felt so purposeful and meaningful i never felt like i was doing a fetch quest or wasting my time and thats why i just couldnt get enough of it. To this day i think ive sunk more than 1000 hours into the witcher 3 and am on my 3rd playthrough. If you havent tried it i highly suggest you do yourself a favor and play it. Amazing game, amazing story and keeps you interested from beginning to end.

Geralt was a great character. Even though you can't ''make'' your own hero you can still shape him and it allowed the games to have far, *far* deeper storytelling than any other large RPG I've ever played. And *definitely* more than any open-world game I've ever played.

After finishing a 3rd playthrough, I decided I wanted to learn all there was to about Geralt of Rivia and his story. It was one of the best ideas I've ever had. I'm writing this because I want more Witcher players to understand and give credit to the true mastermind behind it all, the creator of The Witcher, Andrzej Sapkowski. Don't get me wrong CD Projekt Red put on a masterclass on how to take a story and make it their own and delivered one of if not the best narrative-driven RPG's of all time; but we wouldn't have this masterpiece without Sapkowski and his brilliant story-telling. I once again greatly recommend the books to all the die hard Witcher fans out there! Cheers!

      I don't disagree with you but the way the characters are portrayed in the novels can be pretty different from how they are in the games which a lot of people may not be able to get into after falling in love the game version of the characters. Triss, for example would be pretty difficult to be sympathetic too making the dynamic of the love triangle between her, Geralt and Yennefer kind of meaningless.

    Geralt and yen's relationship and the last wish quest, for the first time in my life, have me invested in a fictional relationship. The way they act for eachother, you can feel the love. It makes me think of my wife, who introduced me to this game. We got married just a year ago. This game, some people say it ie overrated. But if a game, can get me and my wife emotionally invested, in a game and eachother, then its by far the best game out there.

    Witcher 3 is the pinnacle of great storytelling in a game. In a age where developers care more about microtransactions and multiplayer function The Witcher 3 stood out profoundly to me. I don't think I have ever cared about a character in a video game more than I cared about Ciri.

    What I resdiscovered in more detail was while replaying Witcher 3 on my Series X in 4k, was how often I stopped to pan the camera around to observe Geralts beautiful hair and design flapping in the wind with either a gloomy forest in the backround or some beautiful vista overlooking a river. The atmosphere in the game was so immersive and done so well. You actually got scared in certain situations because of how well designed everything was. All types of monsters added to a spectrum of terror that was just so well executed. You felt strong, but you also could be overwhelmed.

      Definitely not. Wouldn't even put it in my top 50 list. Good overall game but it wasn't that special overall. Just a good RPG but mediocre combat mechanics and poorly implemented open world design really left me wanting a lot more. Actually it never should have been open world. Would have been a much better game with better plot flow similar to the other games.

    Hey Luke, really enjoyed the video and can agree whole heartedly.
    The Witcher 3 for me is something i wish i could re-experience again for the first time (even re-obtaining the Platinum i have for it) as there is no other experience (personally) for me that can rival it, maybe other than The Last of Us or Dark Souls 1 (Different genres i know).
    CDPR created a masterpiece, yes it's not "Perfect" but as close to it as can be. The fact that Hearts of Stone was 15 hours for me, and Blood and Wine was 30, on top of the 60 i put into the main story with side quests, is amazing, and no sadly no games moving forward, will warrant such a full experience in terms of scope, depth, enjoyment and simply - having fun again while playing video games.
    I bought the collector's despite the price, knowing i was in for something special and i am so glad i did. Moving forward CDPR hands down has earned my trust, and anything they make from here on out, will warrant an immediate purchase no matter what. They're so transparent with their responses to questions and adamant about making "Quality over Quantity" games that puts faith in Cyberpunk 2077 being another grand experience to rival that of The Witcher 3. Also this was there first attempt at an open world game (TW3 - from what i've heard) and they did a great job.

    I agree with you and you did a good job on explaining what the Witcher III did achieve.
    Besides being one og the best if not the best game I have ever played - I must say, after completing the whole game, exploring every questionmark and done every quest - I now see one of the biggest strenghts also as its weakness - since all the great storytelling has been used and is now gone, the world feels so empty, i can still wander around and gaze at the landscape of skellige islands or the castle in blood and wine - but some of it's original charme is gone :-(
    I wish there were random quests and way more options to still interact with the characters and environments - even after completing everything there is to do.

I played the Witcher my senior year of highschool, I fell in love with the world, played new game plus, all the old games, watched lore videos, and I read the book, and theres a place where I live that looks exactly like what I pictured the Edge of the World to appear like. People say its the best RPB game ever made, I say its the best game made period. The story, the graphics, the side quests, the abundant free DLCs the great Heart of stone DLC and the amazingly vast, breath taking Blood and Wine DLC make it THE BEST FUCKING GAME EVER. All for a great price. I mean the Blood and Wine DLC alone is longer and larger than ENTIRE TRIPLE A GAMES! Its an game within a game, its fucking ridiculous! It made EA, Ubishit and the majority of the large publishers out there look like thieves and liars. Nothing surpasses the main game, add the two DLCs and you have the best game this entire generation has seen to date. Thankfully CDProjekt Red seems set to release another major earthquake in their next game. Cant wait.

      Well you obviously seem to be confused about something. One game being better than another is subjective so no, I don't let such things get to me nor do I care. I only evaluate games fairly via their personal core design focuses. I am guessing you are referring to Fallout 4? If I had to compare games like The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 then Witcher 3 is easily a better traditional style RPG and has much better writing. Anybody should be able to tell you that with a straight face. Bethesda messed up on a lot when it came to their actual RPG aspects. Going voiced character as well as using a simplified dialogue system was definitely the wrong choice. But at least Bethesda knows how to make a proper open world filled with tons of points of interest to explore especially with a lot of vastness in scale.And even though the combat was just like a regular first person shooter I still preferred it to the uninspiring mediocre design of Witcher 3's combat. Then again even Bethesda can learn a thing or two from the true masterpiece among open world games, The Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild. Witcher 3 shouldn't have wasted it's time trying to be something it was not meant to be. An open world isn't a good design choice for a narrative heavy series like The Witcher. There is a reason that the story of The Witcher 2 felt superior in every way to most true Witcher fans. And both The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 suffered from one major issue. A very messy and buggy launch. CD Projekt Red and Bethesda should both take notes from Nintendo to actually release a very polished game with as few glitches and bugs possible. Breath of The Wild shows that it is in fact possible to release a massive scaled game with very few issues.
