    Another solid vid man! I don’t have the level of mods you do, and mine is not an X50, but it is “crap yo pants” fast..(faster than i’m willing to go). It’s funny how many people think I spent $125k on a car and/or guess that my car is only 5-6 yrs old. It is a supercar that your working class car enthusiast can own and not go into hock over it. shape of the lights doesn’t bother me. PSS9 suspension is awesome, as is the Sachs 2.5 and tune. My Fabspeed exhaust is so sweet as well.
    You obviously have BOVs...I’ve been considering upgrading to some. Any issues with them? What brand? Cheers bro.

      Thanks Phil! I would love to get some coilovers, I'm sure it transforms the car.
      I do have blow off valves, but they're integrated into the compressor cover. Google Borg Warner EFR 7163 turbos and you'll see what I mean. I want to upgrade mine to something a little louder, maybe a Tial or Turbosmart. If you're still running a stock style intake at DVs, don't waste your money on upgrading them. You won't hear them any more and they're more likely to leak. Just replace them with 710N stock style valves and a quality silicone F-pipe. Then upgrade to a Tial or Turbosmart once you get a Mafless setup.

      @Erek K - you're correct. But if you're a Porsche enthusiast / german car lover, this is the one. I think the values have actually gone up a tiny bit (or at the lest, leveled out) over the past 5+ years as the general public has started to realize the undervaluation of the 996tts and the fact they have Mezgers. A decent C5 Z06 is what, like 15-20K? C6 probably 30+. Great deals. Cheaper than a 996 for sure.

    I'm kinda what would be considered a Porsche purist. That being said I love the Porsche 911s in all their forms..that 996 turbo is a monster and I think they look incredible if you add a 996gt2 front bumper. The 996 GT2 is one of the most beautiful 911s in any generation. Those guys that don't like the newer Porsches well they are missing out. The 997 is the swear spot as far as looks the ,991 GT3s set your hair on fire! 996s are mechanical analog perfection. I've been fortunate in my life to have driven 100s of 911s and it solidified my feelings towards this mark, then again I could be biased as my family comes from swabia oder schwabenland:) . Thank you for the nice video.

      +Tr Hof thanks for the kind words! I really love the car and agree about the GT2 bumper. I'd love to get one but they are so EXPENSIVE! I like the exterior of the 997 but actually prefer the interior of the 996. I feel like the 997 interior is trying too hard to be modern and it doesn't come off well. I do want to drive a GT3 of any generation someday, I think that would be probably perfect, but much slower than my turbo at my elevation. Thanks for watching and thanks for being a purist that can appreciate all generations!

    I have a 02 996 Porsche 911 turbo and I love it. I'm also running about 700 (crank) on low boost 93 and about 850 on 104. I was running a Carbonetics (I think that was it) triple carbon clutch with a lwfw. Like you said I thought it was great as far as high hp clutchs go but I tired of the marbles in a can sound while idling and the occasional yet inevitable stall as I tried to pull away from a stoplight on a hill. Now I have a Sachs 2.5 and a stock dual mass flywheel and love it. If you want to regain stock like drivability I highly recommend the Sachs 2.5.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed  Před 5 lety

      I didn't know the 2.5 could handle that much power. That's really good info, thank you.
      But most likely, I'll be adding more power down the road so will need to stick with the Tilton. It's really a great clutch overall. The small squeak at engagement and the rattle at idle are more of pet peeves than anything. Overall I really love it. Plus the added benefit of the Tilton hydraulic throw out bearing means clutch disc replacement is super easy, don't even have to remove the transmission!

    Nice video...I purchased a speed yellow 996tt not long ago too and I'm enjoying every bit of it. May I know what mods you've done to your car so far? I'm interested in getting an exhaust upgrade but I am very worried about idling drone since I get stuck in traffic a lot!
    For clutch, I suggest that you look into modding the clutch slave to GT 2. It makes a whole world of difference in terms of clutch feel. For me, the overly assisted clutch was the thing I hated most. I would also recommend an ohlins suspension system.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for watching Jeremy! Speed yellow is such an awesome color, congratulations!
      I've done a ton of mods, pretty much all of the bolt-ons including upgraded turbos. I'm running a Markski tuning 3" x-pipe exhaust. It's loud at wide open but not bad at idle. If you're not concerned with all out power, I'd recommend something with a large center muffler for quietness at idle (Cargraphic, Bbi, Fabspeed and others).
      My clutch system is completely different from stock. I'm running a custom billet master cylinder built by SRM specifically for this system. It also has a hydraulic throw out bearing, which completely removes/replaces the stock slave cylinder and all of the assist functionality and plumbing.
      I would love to get an Ohlins suspension setup. But I'm guessing my budget will put me in the market for H&R or KW at best. But who knows, I'd certainly love a set of Ohlins!

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed  Před 5 lety

      +Ryan Persaud I'm running the EFR 7163 turbos with an integrated bypass valve on the compressor cover. It routes pressurized air from the cover back to the inlet. So essentially it's atmospheric, although in a semi-closed system. I did upgrade to the Turbosmart direct replacement valves that do a 50/50 atmospheric more "blow off" style but changed them back to the stock EFR valves because I didn't like the tone. But really, the valves are loud and sound like a blow off valve, so I normally just use that term. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching! 😁👍

      Depends on your goals. I've never heard one in person, but have heard that they drone really badly. I think the tips look good though.
      Performance wise, they aren't great. Small piping diameter and single muffler design without an x-pipe. It's a design/style that was popular in the early 2000s when the car came out. I think there are much better systems out there now.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed  Před 5 lety

      +Jon M couple reasons.
      1) my transmission has an issue with popping out of second gear in turns (common in the 996tt) so I keep the clutch in to avoid it. It only happens on decel.
      2) when accelerating into a turn, the car has a tendency to understeer badly. Need a bigger rear sway bar and it wouldn't be such an isse.
      3) was trying to keep the car quiet in some parts while I was talking
      I know its not the best way but I wasn't trying to drive really hard. Just cruising through the turns mostly and then punching it on the straights.

    Great vid. Question specific to tuned 996TTs… do you think the DME reports are pointless? I’m looking at one with a relatively high reading despite just 25k miles but it’s been tuned most of its life.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed  Před 2 lety

      I don't think they're pointless. Excuse my memory, it's been a while but one range is for over 7000 rpm and one is for over 8000 or something to that effect. So for a tuned car, the over 7000 range will be much more frequent than a stock car. The other range is more to catch a money shift, or something like that, which is bad. So I use the report to see how recent each range has happened. A car that's for sale, will probably have a recent range 1. If there is range 2 time, see when the operating hours were at the time, then count back from current. Basically I'm saying if a range 2 happened on the last drive, there may be concerns. But if it happened years ago and the car is still running fine, then it's probably nothing to worry about. Overall, focus on how the car runs. If you're really concerned about the status/condition of the engine, get it boroscoped and have a leak down test done. I will also say, these engines are so damn stout, with 25k miles, there's really not much to worry about.
      Best of luck! Let me know if you have any other questions, I'm happy to help!

    • @hatemsgarage
      @hatemsgarage Před 2 lety +1

      @@TheSoundofSpeed appreciate the feedback! Small correction, range 1 is typically hit on a bone stock car coming up to the rev limiter (official range is 6,750-7,250rpms) whereas the range 2 indicates 7,250+).
      I’ve done a ton of research and sounds like tuned examples can and will hit the range 2 with regular spirited driving. That said, still not something you love to see!
      The particular car I’m after has seen over 80 hours of drive time since the last overrev, which puts my mind at ease. Will definitely keep you posted with other questions though!

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed  Před 2 lety

      @@hatemsgarage ah, thank you for the clarification! Do you know which tune is on the car? From my experience, most tuners are not going to set the rev limiter above 7100-7200 at most. So I would say it's very unlikely that the tune would allow the car to surpass 7250, unless the specific tune is custom or something and/or the owner requested the limiter to be set at 7300 or higher. All of that being said, my car with the ProEFI, I had the limiter set at 7300, or maybe 7350 and would no-lift shift all the time, banging on that limiter, and I never had an issue. I know of some people that go even higher on the stock top end, but I've also heard about valves floating around 7500. But again, with 25k miles, that car is pretty minty fresh. I wouldn't be overly concerned. Let me know how it goes!

      @@TheSoundofSpeed hey man! I ended up passed on the prior car I mentioned. Sure enough, another one has surfaced with a VERY well sorted build by one of the best in the US.
      It has forged internals and making about the same power as your car, 730awhp.
      Did you feel as though the car would be reliable at that level for the long term? Definitely want something I can enjoy and not deal with CRAZY maintenance all the time. There are only 8k street miles on the build and 28k miles on the car, so it’s pretty fresh.
      Appreciate the insight!

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed  Před 2 lety

      @@hatemsgarage it really depends. First of all, forged internals is a huge start. Just rods/pistons? Does it have bigger head studs as well? Which fuel is it using to make that kind of power? Stock DME or a stand-alone?
      Any transmission upgrades? Around that power, depending on the torque, 3rd gear might start to get angry and could break on a good 2-3 shift at high power and with good traction.
      Overall, I think 700-800 whp and torque is the sweet spot for this chassis. Still has street manners at that level, and not really pushing the engine/drivetrain super hard. I do think my car was on borrowed time at 700 whp, due to the stock engine. All it would take is a bad tank of E85 or some boost creep at peak torque to bend the rods. That's why I liked having such dynamic boost control, because most of the time driving around, I was set at 600 hp and it was plenty. But I could switch to 700+ kill mode if I really wanted, but tried not to do that often. But if this engine is built, you're pretty much set. I'd drive that setup until the wheels fall off. It should be good to go enjoy for miles and miles depending on what I asked above.
      Oh, who did the build? And what kind of turbos?

  • @Maltaman51
    @Maltaman51 Před 5 lety +5

    Another in a bunch of YT videos wherein the the owner of a tuned or boosted Porsche drives straight down a highway and has nothing -nada- to say about the handling. But there are comments about noise, ride stiffness, and public reception. And orgasmic sounds with acceleration. Maybe I’ve got it wrong but I thought these cars were all about the corners. And the noise ! And the stiffness! Why do we deploy criteria here better suited for a Buick?

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed  Před 5 lety +1

      +Douglas Butler fair point. The car handles well for a normal car but compared to newer McLarens etc, they're really not that great. I think the power and acceleration has aged well, but the handling has been far out engineered. I will say though, my car is on 100% stock suspension. Once I upgrade the suspension, I would be more than happy to talk about handling. But I think the biggest reason turbo owners don't talk about handling is because the Porsche GT cars (GT3 and GT2/3 RS) have that market locked down. My car will probably never handle like a GT3 and I'm ok with that, I just don't focus on it in my videos. In reality, turbos are pretty big and heavy. More suited to big power highway pulls than intricate canyon carving. My car understeers badly and refuses to rotate, even under power... so I don't focus on those drawbacks as much. But... you do give me an idea. I should do a review of handling, maybe before and after suspension work. When I post it, most likely in Spring, I will be sure to reply back here and see what you think. Thanks for the genuine feedback, and I hope you continue watching!

It’s hard enough to explain to them that a 996 Generation 911 means watercooled and different headlights lol I swear I spend like 20 minutes just describing that whole scenario. Don’t even get me started on how the 993’s Carbon Fiber interior bits (first generation that CF trim pieces were available from the factory) were of good quality and the 997 Carbon Fiber trim pieces were good quality. However the vendor that Porsche used for the CF bits in the 996’s trim pieces really dropped the ball! Our CF pieces were made with hardener’s that either cured too quickly or too slowly. Because they become brittle and crack easily with age not to mention they also yellow. 993’s and 997’s CF pieces have held up much better over time.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed  Před 5 lety

      Haha, it's not so much that the suspension is stiff (e.g. from high spring rates and shock dampening) but more that after 16 years and almost 70k miles, the rubber bushings are broken down to pretty much nothing. Yes it's a sportscar suspension, and I enjoy that, what I dislike is how it takes bumps due to the deterioration of the rubber bushings. Really it could use an entire suspension overhaul.
