Some easy shakedown laps at Laguna Seca. Overall the car is very capable, and I was able to run multiple 1:43s barely pushing it. I think a mid 1:30 is easily within reach.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed

      Agreed, not the best for the turbos. But quality aftermarket turbos like Borg Warner units can definitely handle some abuse. Like any wear part, you replace/rebuild when needed. But I do see your point. I generally feel bad and cringe a little on behalf of parts when I beat on them. Even after going to the track and wringing my engine's neck for 20 minutes straight, I feel like I need to apologize to the car a little 😄

  • @hatemsgarage
    @hatemsgarage Před 3 lety

    Great vid. Question specific to tuned 996TTs… do you think the DME reports are pointless? I’m looking at one with a relatively high reading despite just 25k miles but it’s been tuned most of its life.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed Před 3 lety

      I don't think they're pointless. Excuse my memory, it's been a while but one range is for over 7000 rpm and one is for over 8000 or something to that effect. So for a tuned car, the over 7000 range will be much more frequent than a stock car. The other range is more to catch a money shift, or something like that, which is bad. So I use the report to see how recent each range has happened. A car that's for sale, will probably have a recent range 1. If there is range 2 time, see when the operating hours were at the time, then count back from current. Basically I'm saying if a range 2 happened on the last drive, there may be concerns. But if it happened years ago and the car is still running fine, then it's probably nothing to worry about. Overall, focus on how the car runs. If you're really concerned about the status/condition of the engine, get it boroscoped and have a leak down test done. I will also say, these engines are so damn stout, with 25k miles, there's really not much to worry about. Best of luck! Let me know if you have any other questions, I'm happy to help!

    • @hatemsgarage
      @hatemsgarage Před 3 lety

      @@TheSoundofSpeed appreciate the feedback! Small correction, range 1 is typically hit on a bone stock car coming up to the rev limiter (official range is 6,750-7,250rpms) whereas the range 2 indicates 7,250+). I’ve done a ton of research and sounds like tuned examples can and will hit the range 2 with regular spirited driving. That said, still not something you love to see! The particular car I’m after has seen over 80 hours of drive time since the last overrev, which puts my mind at ease. Will definitely keep you posted with other questions though!

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed Před 3 lety

      @@hatemsgarage ah, thank you for the clarification! Do you know which tune is on the car? From my experience, most tuners are not going to set the rev limiter above 7100-7200 at most. So I would say it's very unlikely that the tune would allow the car to surpass 7250, unless the specific tune is custom or something and/or the owner requested the limiter to be set at 7300 or higher. All of that being said, my car with the ProEFI, I had the limiter set at 7300, or maybe 7350 and would no-lift shift all the time, banging on that limiter, and I never had an issue. I know of some people that go even higher on the stock top end, but I've also heard about valves floating around 7500. But again, with 25k miles, that car is pretty minty fresh. I wouldn't be overly concerned. Let me know how it goes!

    • @hatemsgarage
      @hatemsgarage Před 3 lety

      @@TheSoundofSpeed hey man! I ended up passed on the prior car I mentioned. Sure enough, another one has surfaced with a VERY well sorted build by one of the best in the US. It has forged internals and making about the same power as your car, 730awhp. Did you feel as though the car would be reliable at that level for the long term? Definitely want something I can enjoy and not deal with CRAZY maintenance all the time. There are only 8k street miles on the build and 28k miles on the car, so it’s pretty fresh. Appreciate the insight!

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed Před 3 lety

      @@hatemsgarage it really depends. First of all, forged internals is a huge start. Just rods/pistons? Does it have bigger head studs as well? Which fuel is it using to make that kind of power? Stock DME or a stand-alone? Any transmission upgrades? Around that power, depending on the torque, 3rd gear might start to get angry and could break on a good 2-3 shift at high power and with good traction. Overall, I think 700-800 whp and torque is the sweet spot for this chassis. Still has street manners at that level, and not really pushing the engine/drivetrain super hard. I do think my car was on borrowed time at 700 whp, due to the stock engine. All it would take is a bad tank of E85 or some boost creep at peak torque to bend the rods. That's why I liked having such dynamic boost control, because most of the time driving around, I was set at 600 hp and it was plenty. But I could switch to 700+ kill mode if I really wanted, but tried not to do that often. But if this engine is built, you're pretty much set. I'd drive that setup until the wheels fall off. It should be good to go enjoy for miles and miles depending on what I asked above. Oh, who did the build? And what kind of turbos?

    Here’s a good trick watch the rpms and coolant gauges when the engines cold and it’s really cold out the computer reads the intake air temp sensor and determines how cold the air is more cold it more dense the air is requires more fuel but the computer will idle the car longer at a higher rpm. It dose this to help warm up that coolant and oil faster once the idle starts coming down below 1000 rpms and the coolant gauge starts to move your pretty much good to go the rest will heat up why’ll driving. Pretty much the computer is telling you when it’s good to go when the engine comes down to a steady idle. The oil at that point is thin enough and warm enough to be pumped at a steady idle. By then the fuel system should also be in closed loop and all the oxygen sensors will be warmed up. It’s important to watch rpms they tell you more then you think.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed

    I agree, I like to start my car and let the rpms drop and the temp gauge just comes up off the peg, then drive conservatively for a little.

      Such amazing cars aren't they! And 625hp is just about perfect I think, just the simple mods. Mine rarely broke down, and when it did, it was generally something to do with what I had done more than actual reliability. I would have another as a daily driver anyday, without question. Thanks for watching!

      Haha, I always said the same thing. Can't see the headlights from the driver's seat! And with all that power available, I was always more concerned with the feel and sound than the looks. And yes, I completely forgot to include that the lights are from a GT1 when comparing to the Boxster and early 996. Wish there was an easy way to edit after the fact haha. Thanks for watching!

    These things are no joke. Was fortunate to ride in a techart car with around 700hp like yours. That was the only time I've felt acceleration so violent that I wanted to throw my food up lol. They pull with ferocity! Tempted to buy one of these as a daily. Any idea what that would be like? I know they are AWD also which would be helpful in winters. The values are pretty stagnant so buying one and driving it would depreciate horribly either.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed Před 4 lety

      I daily drove mine in winter for about 18 months, then stopped because I didn't have to anymore, not because I didn't want to. They are great drivers, highly recommend, you won't regret it!

      And yes, I think these cars at the 700-800 whp mark are frighteningly perfect. Any more power is pretty much unusable but I still always wanted more haha. But my car was just pure joy at this power level, I miss it so much.

    first time viewer of your channel and videos. Because I just bought a 996 turbo so these videos are suddenly becoming interesting to me. Can you give me an approximate price to get the car to around 600whp?

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed Před 5 lety

      600 whp is relatively cheap/easy. I did 525 awhp on stock X50 turbos with just bolt-ons. Parts list for 600whp is below, prices do not include labor to install. -Quality exhaust: $2500-$4000, can be found cheaper used or way cheap if you go straight pipes, but those are super loud and drone badly. Find something that's 3" diameter with an xpipe. -Quality intercoolers: $1500-$2500. You could probably run 600 whp on OEM GT2RS cores and be fine. Or step up to some custom 4.5" cores. I'd recommend Markski Tuning or Silly Rabbit Motorsports. -Clutch: $1500-$2000. Get a Sachs 2.0 or similar, will handle the power and a bit more with good driveability. You could delay the clutch but eventually the extra torque will kill the stock clutch. -Fuel System: $50-$1000. You could go cheap and spend $50 on just a 5 bar fuel pressure regulator. This might not get you to the full 600 whp, but pretty close, but you also won't be able to run E85. I would recommend going with something a little more robust and getting proper fuel injectors and a fuel pump. Injector Dynamics ID1000s would let you run pump gas, race gas or E85 up to 600 whp. For a pump, just upgrade to a Walbro E85 safe drop in unit, I think it's the 455lph, no need for anything else. -Turbo rebuild with billet wheels: $1000-$2000. Depending on if your car came with stock K16 turbos or K24 turbos, there are some options. Just get a quality billet wheel and call it good. Some hybrid K24 turbos can make over 700whp. Choose wisely. Bigger isn't always better. But if you think you may want 700 whp down the road, it's much cheaper to do it once. 700 hp turbos can be ran at 600 hp easily, but 600 hp turbos will never make 700. -DME tune: $1500. There's only one person I would recommend for a quality 600 whp build, and that's DJ Markski. Good guy, great service. He will probably have some opinions on the best way to achieve 600whp, to which I would recommend that you just listen to your tuner and go with what they recommend. So you're looking at probably $10,000-$13,000 realistically to build a nicely equipped 600 whp 996 turbo. Not chump change but that power level is super fun on this chassis. I would also recommend that you solicit advice from forums like 6speedonline.com and the 996 turbo Facebook groups (e.g. "Porsche 911 (996) turbo), lots of people with tons of knowledge and advice. If nothing else, I'm always happy to help. Thanks for checking out my channel, I have lots of other informative videos you should check out as well. Cheers!

      @@TheSoundofSpeed Wow you are AWESOME! That info is very helpful. Thank you. Not too cheap but 600whp is a big number! If I were to do these mods, I would probably go 700 just to have the extra power if I ever wanted it (you know its never enough). Would you say your car is 600whp? I saw your drag racing video and seems like it should do better numbers. My 2015 GTR has a Cobb tune, intakes, full exhaust, y-pipe and I run 6.9 in the 1/8th consistently. I understand the launch on the GTR is amazing but I still trap 101mph. I would guess I am around 550whp.

    • @TheSoundofSpeed
      @TheSoundofSpeed Před 4 lety

      @@reubenroll2144 no problem, happy to help! My car made a little over 600 whp on pump gas, 91 octane. In the drag racing video, I was running around E75 ethanol and full boost, which made 731 awhp on a Dynojet. My numbers at the track should have been way better, but being at 6000+ ft elevation and not having traction really hurt me. I think with drag radials, I would have been deep in the 10s, probably close to a high 9 with a perfect run. I mean, I was trapping over 140mph, which is a solid 9.7 to 9.9 mph with a good front 1/8th. But really, I was never chasing records or anything, just trying to have fun and not break expensive parts. But really... these cars are terrible at drag racing, so I'd avoid comparing it to your GTR, it will only make you sad haha. Best to just enjoy that analog feel and appreciate it for what it is!

    • @reubenroll2144
      @reubenroll2144 Před 4 lety

      @@TheSoundofSpeed Haha! I will NOT compare it to the GTR drag numbers. I know it's an older car with a manual gearbox and less technology. I do know that I will ejnoy my 996 more than I did the GTR. I was just wondering why the number seemed a bit low for the power that you were making but it makes sense--elevation, tires/traction always play a big role. It's nice to have the power when you need it and makes it a blast to drive on streets.
