Derek, thanks for this extensive demo and tutorial on loading and playing backing tracks with the NUX JTC Pro looper/drum pedal! I just received one of these pedals myself, and I'm looking forward to working with it. I think it's the best looper you can buy for under US$200!

Thanks Derek, this is the only detailed instruction anywhere (including the NUX website) that I could find on converting WAV or MP3 backing track files to the 24 bit to enable them to work on the looper. One additional comment would be that I tried several times to convert and was unsuccessful until I went back and looked at your video showing the format converter and noticed that in addition to having selected 24 bit, you also had selected stereo, and I had left mine on mono which would not work. So in addition to selecting the 24 bit, you need to select stereo before converting.

I have this pedal, I didn't buy it for backing tracks but I am slowly warming to the idea, as a performer I always used to build the loop live but with this there are other possibilities, I'm just undecided as whether it's live music or not, I will play guitar and sing over Bass and Drum tracks just for a few numbers as I don't want the idea to overtake me, it really is knowing when to use backing tracks.

    • @DerekPaulGuitar
      @DerekPaulGuitar  Před 4 lety

Ozzy Mandias hi Ozzy, I hear ya, but I guess at least you have the option, plus also it doesn’t necessarily have to be the whole backing track, could just be something you’ve recorded yourself I.e. drums and a string section, possibilities are there :)) cheers man

@@DerekPaulGuitar Hi, yes, that's what I'm doing, I'm recording harmonies but the temptation to use Backing Tracks is there and growing, I'm fine with it but it's just if someone comes up after and say's 'Hey man, that's cheatin', I don't think it is, I mean. if you play more complex songs like for instance Queen, they don't always stick to the verse/chorus structure and although I'm capable of laying the songs it would take an age and by the time I was ready the Audience would be out the door...

Definitely not cheating at all! Music isn’t a sport as they say, use whatever you can to entertain your audience, I don’t think they’ll question it as long as they enjoy what you do, I spent 10 years in a band where we used drum tracks with piano and synths because we didn’t have A drummer, no-one cared, they just loved what we did :)

Great tutorial, This Nu-X JTC Pedal is doing what the now Officially Discontinued Digitech JamMan Pedals should have done !
The software puts a Wav or any othe backing track file into a NuX file that can be stored in the pedal.
That is exactly what the mid 2000 Multi Track boards did . You would record in a File type only associated with the unit, then it would convert it and you could import it to your computer .
The NuX you have the file on your computerin Wav, convert it and export it to the pedal . Perfect
The modern Software is the key .
Great Tutorial, thanks for the info, DPG!

Happy New Year, Derek. You always seem to come up with timely items. A few weeks ago, I spent fifteen minutes on the phone with a rep from an online vendor trying to describe what I needed when it came to a 'drum machine' solution. He had no suggestions, yet here is a pedal with drums, backing track capability and a looper. Sometimes you wonder why they pay these guys, but to be fair, the only place I can find it is on Zzounds and they are sold out until the middle of January. Does the looper function as well as say, a Boss RC-1?

    • @DerekPaulGuitar
      @DerekPaulGuitar  Před 4 lety +1

Hi Brad, a very happy new year to you too and hope you had a good holiday break, thanks for the comment as always :) yes it does function as well as the Boss, it operates in the same way (the Boss does have stereo inputs though) but the JTC has 6 hours loops time as opposed to the Boss which has 12 Minutes, in my opinion if you are in the market for a looper (and this has the auto start function as well, meaning it will only start looping once it hears a note or chord from the guitar) then this is amazing because for me the backing track feature is incredible, thats why i focused on that part of it, if you need any more info Brad then let me know.

Hi Derek.. thanks for the video. The video and the unit was exactly what I was after - basically for the backing track use rather than the looper.
A question if you could assist? It is about moving from one backing track to the next. I bought a NUX NMP-2 footswitch which 'should' enable this but either I’m challenged (very possible :) or the unit is faulty but I can’t make it work as I need. Interested if you've had any experience with the footswitch and/or how you move to the next back in track when gigging as the only way I can currently do it is to turn the memory select knob by hand. Many thanks, Adrian

This is very good review and I particularly come back to it again and again because I am contemplating buying one and using the one-shot function to load entire drum backing tracks I create in EZ Drummer. What I would do is create the entire drum track and then export it as a wav file, then convert it using the NUX file converter. It will be like having a full-time drummer to play along with. I do have one important question though and I'm hoping you can answer it. Is it possible to just send the output of the one-shot backing tracks to a separate amplifier like you can send the individual drum rhythym patterns? This is important because I would be able to keep the drums clean and also process them using things like a preamp, compressor and EQ to get the best possible sound. Cheers!

But when I unplug the looper pedal from macbook I don't see a dot next to the first slot digit on on nux looper pedal. And play button starts to record instead of playing the song. Also you can add drum intros & fills. Loops sound pretty damn good as well. If they don't the fault aint with Boss! I would suggest the following.
If like me you can send the drum & backing loops to a separate amp full range combo & keep your bass/ gutar rig free for just that. GET THE BOSS!. If your running a single combo. You won't be able to exploit the fidelity capability the Boss offers anyway. So it kinda matters less. Then the NUX offers @ least in my limited experience the best bang for buck I've found yet

you scared me with the drum sound could have been better, I nearly bought it and now I'm hesitant again
it claims to be PRO, I was expecting the sound to be of the top quality

It’s just the sound of the snare for me, but I’m a little fussy, it’s a top quality unit though, maybe watch another YT video on the drum section of the pedal to decide, cheers

      @@DerekPaulGuitar cheers!
      I bought it.
I will find out about the drums sound quality in few days.
I think it should be ok, since we can separate the drums and the guitar output, and put the drums through some equalizer / filter / enhancer in the editing software.
we can even entirely replace the drums later on.

@@DerekPaulGuitar after few days of using it (many hours a day), I think it's a solid looper.
the first impression of listening to the drums was bad. I wanted to return it.
then I downloaded NUX JTC Pro Firmware V1.4, and upgraded the pedal through USB (it took me 1 day to figure out not all USB Micro B cables transfer DATA !!!),
and BOOM! they re-did the drums samples !!! I couldn't believe how big the change was. even directly plugged to Line6 combo guitar amp.
then I put my return decision on hold and I started testing all the connections:
      1. F3 stereo out : guitar L to Line 6, drums R to PA (Sony integrated music system)
      2. F4 stereo out: both guitar + drums to L and R (just Line6 and drums EQ)
      3. F4 stereo out: both guitar + drums to headphones
and it sounds excellent. the drums are not only usable for the practice or jamming. I am actually using them now for recording my songs.
I decided to keep it, I don't see much benefits of getting Boss RC-10R (6 hours of storage just like NUX PRO) or Boss RC-500 (13 hours of storage). yes Boss has that dual track advantage, which could be great to have.
I mostly use the looper as a digital storage (in 1 session I can record as many takes as I want and then choose the best one), to practice the phrases / techniques / licks etc.
I also use it to compose my songs, I can structure the song as:
      - intro
      -verse
      -chorus
      -verse
      -chorus
      -solo
      -outro
I can record each part as a separate phrase / loop / memory slot, using different effects / sound settings, and I can perform the song, by sequencing the sub parts using NUX NMP-2 phrase switcher.
then I can copy all the pieces to the Reaper on Ubuntu Studio, and fine tune the sound / timing / transitions between parts.
so yeah sorry for the lengthy comment, but the conclusion is: NUX Drum and Looper PRO is a keeper, as it does everything I need to structure a song, practice, and to use it as digital recorder, prior to processing it in the DAW. I actually prefer that workflow: to record many takes to the looper / storage, and only then edit it in the software.
      PS
For example I recorded the background riif loop many times, trying to perfect it, and then I put 2 takes (of the same phrase in the same tempo) as a stereo track in the software, and man! it sounds so good. you get those little imperfections of live performance, panning from left to right naturally (imagine 2 Iron Maiden guitars playing the same thing synchronously but slightly differently)
