- We recreated a Pink Floyd Live in Pompeii PA Rig with Chris Hewitt of CH Vintage Audio to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original recording date in 1971.
Some people have asked how they can support the channel, so I now have a 'Buy Me a Coffee' account! www.buymeacoffee.com/Troglody...

I was born in '68 and due to vague, unplacable memories from the 70s I always associate Wem gear as being outdoors on a summer's day, somewhere surrounded by fields - so this video HAD to happen!!! XD My God, thank you!
amazing seeing this old system
Thanks for your extensive efforts, gents. Great to have a tour through the gear.
So cool. I love people who geek out over this stuff, especially when it's Floyd!
Charlie was a legend, the true pioneer of modern P.A. and apparently a true gentleman. R.I.P.
I just wish I could have met him - he’s left such a great legacy
@@TroglodyteMusic Charlie Watkins was a customer when I worked at CT Electronics selling components. He was not impressed with the new-fangled analog 'bucket brigade' delay units that were coming on the market at the time, and referred to them as 'squawk boxes'..
If you had to use and maintain WEM Copycats as a PA tech, the BBDs and the Roland Space Echo were a godsend.
Oh, those Binsons!😊
It's funny how WEM kit was everywhere in 1969/70 (given away free) but almost nobody used it after that point. Gilmour kept a cabinet and I had an amp combo that sounded great, I sold it to DEVO.
Amazing!!! 🎶 🎵 ❤
This is amazing
Very interesting, thanks 😊👍❤️
Its insane how technology has progressed where today a tiny 2x12 bass rig that weighs 30lbs each cuts as much as half of this stuff.
As a matter of fact I was in the Pompeii amphitheatre a few weeks ago. Sadly they put modern scaffolding for some upcoming concert. I made a point of driving past Vesuvius on the motorway with Echoes playing!
thank you so much, love the love!
You are so welcome!
409s my personal holy grails
Fantastic! Had the good old WEMs - memories!!
👍Salute to you all sir. Pink Floyd is the only band their fans will collect whole pa set fr a specific performance. 👍
More Pink Floyd PA videos coming soon…a slightly later pa than this one
Can’t wait to see the next part!
Not too long hopefully - working on it as we speak ;)
Thank you for doing this, for filming this thing. This is just extraordinary.
You’re welcome - it’s been so much fun to do. I’m just editing a video now where a band actually play through the rig!
@@TroglodyteMusic Forty plus years ago I would sit hunched over the Ummagumma album with a magnifying glass, peering intently at the equipment shot on the back, trying to decipher the build out. Your video(s) are like the Rosetta Stone. You have a subscriber for life. Keep up the great work.
WOW!! I can almost hear echos intro as they pan over the gear...
This is so awsome! Looking forward to the performance
:) thank you…hopefully very soon for the next one ;)
Wow
This is just awesome!!!!
Thank you - this was a lot of fun to make.
That's magical... I love it.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it :)
Cooool!
Great!
Glad you enjoyed :)
What a wonderfully, eccentrically bonkers thing to have done. Really enjoyed this video....but no mention or explanation of the parabolic speakers. Surely the most eye catching part of this rig recreation?
We talk about them a little bit on the Mark Radcliffe video. They are amazing pieces of equipment :)
Another great video 👍 Worth hanging on until the end for the dramatic *no spoilers* finish too 😂
Hahaha now that was fun lol
This is Awesome ❤️🔥❤️❤️❤️🔥
Thank you :) it was such a great day!
Reminds me of Portlandia. Got everything, ain’t played a note. Beware of the man who owns only one guitar, he can play the mess out of it.
I think it would be awesome to see you guys find and recreate the late 90s Pink Floyd Turbosound TFL/TFS (Floodlight/Flashlight) system one day as well.
The Doobie Brothers were still using 409's in the nineties because of their hypercardiod pattern allowed them to increase their monitor levels without feedback.
What brand compression driver used in 15 multicell Altec horn please? Great video BTW...!
All tho it is from a different period....any chance I can come and plug in to it and play some syd barrett songs... what a dream that would be
WEM Dominator 30. My mate’s first amp. You could fry an egg on it after 30 minutes, and that warm valves smell…..
와 이건 정말 멋디자
I want a PINK FLOYD LONDON stencil
I second that!!!
Live AT Pompeii...
Are those mics a kind of noise cancelling arrangement where environmental sound cancels out through the two faces? If so you would expect them to work just as well the other way around at 180 degree anti-phase. They would be designed in that case to be acoustically symmetrical.
Didn’t they sell some of this gear to The Cure?
oh the days of lugging tons of gear for a live show. now its an app.
Wait?! Where are the special guests to play the rig?
There a few videos of a band playing through the rig on this channel ;)
Were the parabolics at Pompeii?
Good spot, No they weren’t, but they were at the Isle of Wight festival and he had them, so we thought we, hey why not wire them in and have a listen as everything else was out :)
@@TroglodyteMusic Ok! Listened to all the tracks. Sounded great. Nice field setting. Wish I Was There! Thanks
What does PA mean please?
Public Address.
they skipped over the dishes? what are those wem dsh things?
Parabolic speaker. Designed to throw sound over long distances. This one goes out to 3-4 miles from a 12" speaker.
We do talk about them a bit in some of the other videos with Mark Radcliffe :)
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
NO FUCKIN WAY… IM AN AUDIOPHILE BECAUSE IM A MUSICIAN. WHAT I WOULD DO TO PLAY THE KEYBOARD AND DRUMS WITH THAT SET UP. MAYBE A BACKING TRACK. I WOULD MAKE THE ALBATROSS FLY!
EVERY FUCKIN PIECE!!!! 😢 FROM THE GREATEST CONCERT NO ONE SAW
OK, THE GONG LOOKS SMALL THOUGH 😅 EDIT RIGHT BRAND!
THE STAND 😂 I NOTICED THAT IN THE VIDEO… THE ONLY REASON I THOUGHT IT WAS A FAKE SET UP FOR SHOW… NO WAY IT CAN STAY THERE WITH ALL THE VIBRATION 😂😂😂
YOU DIDNT EVEN WARM UP THE GONG … EVEN ROGER DID… OTHERWISE IT SOUNDS LIKE THAT.. LIKE BANING AN ALUMINUM PIE PLATE… WATCH CAREFULLY.. WHN HE HOLDS THE BEATER CLOSE… HE WOULD BE DOING LIGHT TAPS… WARMS IT UP, THEN THE CRASH HAS A MORE RICH FULL SOUND RATHER THAN SMACK-FIZZLE. 😊
