In this episode of Africa Reacts (brought to you by Historical Africa), we will be reacting to the story of Faith Odunsi, the Nigerian wonder kid.
Faith Odunsi is not your average teenager. Born and raised in Nigeria, Faith discovered her passion for mathematics at a very
young age. With an insatiable curiosity and a natural aptitude for numbers, Faith quickly outpaced her peers, earning her the title of a
    mathematical prodigy."
"Faith's journey began in her early years when she started showing an extraordinary interest in mathematics. Her parents and
teachers quickly recognized her talent and encouraged her to explore her passion further. Faith's love for numbers became a driving
force in her life, pushing her to achieve more than anyone could have imagined."
"Faith's academic journey has been nothing short of remarkable. She has excelled in various mathematics competitions, both
nationally and internationally. Her accolades include winning gold at the International Mathematics Olympiad and being recognized
as one of the brightest young minds in the field." Faith Odunsi solved 19 mathematics questions in 60 seconds, becoming the best
candidate in the 2021 mathematics competition. She also took part in the Global Open Mathematics Tournament, an international
competition with participants from Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Australia where she scored top marks, beating every other
nation. In 2018, Odunsi received a Record Holder Award for the highest number of questions answered on Cowbellpedia Secondary
Schools Mathematics TV Quiz Show which is a Nigerian national mathematics television quiz show where she answered 19
    mathematical questions in 60 seconds.

The country only got independence in 1960 after a century of comprehensive British looting of its resources and abject failure to build even basic infrastructure in the territory in the name of 'colonialism'. Because of that looting, the country only had its first power plant in 1964 and its first university in 1962, after the Brits had been kicked out. You don't turn ''first world'' in 50 years after that no matter how brilliant your people. It will take them decades more to get there. How many years has YOUR country been independent? I'm Nigerian and an American citizen. I remember how serious we had to take our schooling and how it felt like a competition amongst my siblings, as well as cousins to see who was the most intelligent. Everyone made the honor roll and some became valedictorians. Till this day, some of us are still studying and going to school, all while living well and ensuring our children do the same. This little genius reminds me of my sisters and cousin's. I'm not surprised her level of intelligence supercedes her classmates, colleagues and most adult's. Tribalism is a division, it glorifies differences like bigness of loops in ears. Rather than letting differences come together and be strengths, like a man and woman create a child. If I focus on my difference and you suffer or are attacked- I’d than got to ask myself, ‘why do I care?’. In difference I wouldn’t. Nigeria is a land of extremes. We have a handful of geniuses like Faith Odunsi, and millions of school aged children who aren't attending school. Society has to cater for those who are missing out on education, the nation needs them.

You forgot to mention the far greater number of millions who ARE attending school.

@@african-history-fountain All school aged children should be attending school. This is one of the core roles of governments around the world.
I didn't mention the millions that attend school because "it goes without saying" that governments provide schools and teachers for the youth.
My point was to draw attention to the plight of the neglected and forgotten.
A startling fact before October 7th 2024, 97% of all people in Gaza, can read and write - this is after 17 years of blockades and sanctions by Israel.
Nigeria has never been subject to such external aggression and has NEVER managed to achieve 97% adult literacy.
Most Gazans are Muslims too, so our Muslim brothers and sisters can't use religion as an excuse for illiteracy.

@@oceejekwam6829 The Gaza population is half a million, so it is utterly ludicrous to compare that to another developing country called Nigeria with 230 million people. Of course the latter would have a far greater challenge educating its entire population than the former. Plus your initial post made it seem like you were saying Nigeria had just a few geniuses on one hand, and millions of out of school children on the other. Many would take that literally. Stop assuming that people ‘know’. Many don’t know anything at all about Africa, and are heavily influenced by media misrepresentation of the continent. So you need to be very clear and precise when discussing facts about the continent. If you live in the west, you would be familiar with being asked ignorant questions about Africa by even well educated people. So don’t assume that “it goes without saying” that everyone knows majority of Nigerian kids are in school. Most people outside Africa don’t know that, so be clear and unambiguous when you write about the place.

You're right, I didn't mention the obvious that millions of children do attend school.
The size of the population is a "smoke screen" as the country is divided up into states sub-units called local government areas (LGAs). The LGAs in particular are the size of Gaza or even smaller, however these cases of mass illiteracy can be found amongst many LGAs.
Nigeria has more than enough resources to ensure every child and youth can attend school and college. It's a matter of prioritisation, competency, transparency and integrity.
Geniuses are rare that's a part of the attraction.
      Thank you for your post.

You black Americans can’t come here and try to share their glory. That is not a black woman. That is a Nigerian girl child. She’s neither a woman nor black. She’s specifically Nigerian, African and a child. Let’s be honest, a black American woman or Caribbean woman could never have won this competition. You can deny it but most ppl know it’s the truth
