It’s incredible and terrifying at the same time to see technology evolve, as someone who was born in late 90’s is so crazy to think that i went from watching movies on a VHS to having a phone where you can do pretty much anything. Lately i’ve been trying to separate myself from my phone and tech in general, it’s useful no doubt about it however we can also fall into this never ending usage and complete dependence. Nice video btw!
There's a thing called neuroplasticity, basically the brain's ability to remodel itself based on learning, experience and sensory input. I think it's a universally bad idea to surrender neuroplasticity to a handful of tech giants, who either don't know or don't care about the long-term effects of their innovations.
Something I struggle with, is understanding/accepting how mindlessly receptive most people are to surrendering their independence as a human. The average person gives this independence away without much question, and even worse, many don't even recognize this as a loss of autonomy.
Agreed! I think partially to blame is the idea that each “innovation” is automatically considered to be “progress” by the gen pop, and to not adopt it automatically makes you a Luddite. But this puts companies fully in control of shaping our futures, which is certainly not the move. Appreciate the comment!

In my country they are giving their iris scan to worldcoin for free in exchange for a max of 30$ in their token ,i think, i like tech but some of them is ´too far´ for me.

I think you're right. Over time these head set things will replace the standard cell phone. I live in an old folks community (the youngest tenant, Lol). When the old people here go out for walks, they're not on their cell phones. They're from a time when such devices weren't the norm. When I drive through neighborhoods around here, though, I always see younger people glued to their phones while walking their dogs or pushing strollers. I can for sure see the time when they're wearing their headsets while walking, disconnected from their surroundings. It's good conversations like this are happening but I don't think enough people will disconnect from the technology. What do I know, though? Thanks for the video and the conversation.

Why do you believe that you can't make friends without technology? Maybe if you're younger than me you haven't had the chance to live a life outside of pervasive personal tech. I'm not sure of your age, but I'm 33 and during my teenage years I didn't have a cell phone I my early twenties, I didn't have a smartphone. All my best friends were made without these technologies! You can do it!!
I don't forsee VR headsets becoming mainstream. The thing about phones is that we don't want to be using them when we're in class, on the job, talking to someone next to us, driving (hopefully), shopping, or many other things. While yes, you could technically do these things while wearing a VR headset, that will always be a degradation of real life. You will always be looking at a pass through image or digital recreation. And you can't just take them off and put them in your pocket either.
I was a fairly early VR adpoter (5+ years ago) and I still enjoy VR. But it's something I use a few times a month, at most. And it has never and will never be more convenient than a phone. It has to be a certain size and form factor, as it is limited by the size and shape of a human head. Phones are not.

It's absolutely a turning point the evolution of things. When Apple does it, it's "cool" even if it looks goofy or weird, like the AirPods did at first. So I'm sure them having a competitor to all the others on the market will just advance things more, and honestly, I don't trust parents won't resist getting little Timmy his first VR headset for his 14th birthday. You'd be surprised how many parents have their toddlers staring at a phone while I take their orders. But like others have said, simple living without a reliance on tech will always be popular no matter how cyberpunk things feels. Same with parenting, good ones will always be there.
The smartphones aren't going anywhere, VR will always be niche.

I don't know, I mean I get why companies would like these devices to replace phones but I just can't see what they have to offer that phones don't at this point. Smartphones out of the gate did offer access to the internet etc that normal cell-phones didn't. So I really don't know. Let's hope that they won't become the norm, I think there is still hope. Then again like you said people went for the very expensive/ easy to lose headphones that run out of battery with almost no resistance.

As a photographer, I’ve increasingly started to question just how much resolution or features you realistically need to capture a moment, and it’s no surprise that I’ve started to use older, simpler gear. Owned 3 different Sony A7 bodies, various Fuji gear etc… and now I’m using the original Canon 5D Classic… and it’s does everything you need. I’m not surprised I’ve moved this way, I work with computers everyday.. I don’t need a computer in a camera also. The rewards of nailing competent work with limitations is so much more fulfilling. I love gear, and these type of inventions like the Apple VP are incredible, but I don’t see myself adopting such technology. I’ve found where I’m now comfortable and I’m fine with that. I don’t feel the need to keep up with the Jones.

Appreciate your thoughts and thanks for the video. But I think the Vision Pro is just a concept, niche device. Sort of like 3-D TVs and foldable phones. it’s just a fad that will probably pass. I base that on the thousands of people who have returned their vision pros. What say you?
As a flip phone and landline user I fear the day where you literally cannot function in society without smartphone-replacing smart glasses
due to alternative accessibility requirements (which on the whole as a society we've gotten wayyyyy better at enforcing and improving on) I can't see that becoming a reality.
A lot of stuff in business also remains reliant on those options and will continue to do so for entirely practical reasons.
"I dont want to say you looked like a tool... but...." 😂😂😂 i felt the same, and i finally succumbed to buying airpods recently and honestly as someone who has massive sensory/over stimulation issues theyve been a life saver for me. Technology is great when it's right... as you touched on previously about the amish (? I believe this reference is correct?) But not all technology is progress and right now it's the only lens we seem to be devouring these new developments through. I recently watched a video on the influence of AI on history and historical imagery and it was really confronting. You provoke such good conversation, i really wish i could sit down in person with you and those who follow your channel. Great insight, friend ❤

I’m personally extremely optimistic about the potential for vision tech to create more immersive and human experiences that connect us in ways technology has never been able to do before.
I love playing video games with my brothers for example, but it’s always felt a little weird to do so while our attention is focused on a screen. Even if we’re in the same room or looking at the same screen, it just isn’t the same as playing a board game or playing sports.
Some VR games will get you maybe 30% of the way there, but the experiences are still way too janky and often uncomfortable or inconvenient.
Once high fidelity, truly immersive, social Mixed Reality experiences get good (and haptic feedback devices, especially for long distance VR experiences), we’re gonna have some seriously cool stuff to work with.
Also, smartphones haven’t really been around that long, and it seems like people are starting to wake up to the negative effects of not just the devices themselves, but the dark design patterns and malevolent business practices that pop up alongside them.
At the end of the day, it’s up to people to design things ethically, and to vote with their dollar when something crosses the line.
As long as tangible value is being created, I don’t see an issue with pushing technological boundaries.
While I don't think smartphones will be completely (or mostly) wiped out in 10 years, I do think you have a point. It's not great to rely on tech, and it's not good for these companies to take our attention the way they do. I don't like having a phone that can do so much, but I also am not satisfied with the dumbphones I've seen on the market. My screentime is pretty dang high, and I don't like that, but I spend a lot of time talking to online friends. I don't really vibe with too many people locally, so it's a tradeoff I make. But I am so torn between the high tech world and the low tech world, and it honestly feels like I can't win.
I am a bit concerned that tech bosses will push for AR Headsets. I for one won't be switching to having a device on my head though as I get migraines on the regular.

Yeah because the stream is going to be beamed right into your head so you won't need one. But in all seriousness, the way things are can't go on, it can change to something else or get worse, probably the latter. One thing I do want to note though, is while there seems to be a growing anti-smartphone discourse; and there's awareness of some of the problems, BUT, we seem to have no way of making any of these supposed movements more than just a trend.
I consider minimalism to be a kind of trend or wave that was powerful, and to some extent got commodified and predominantly became cotnent that makes people feel good to watch and makes people feel good to present. It became a monetizable "lifestyle" like any other, completely divested from any cultural context, just as we see with meditation now too. Any anti-smartphone, (and we might define it even better), needs to be more than just a performance. Right now it seems kind of genuine as a movement but lets be honest, it's very easy to see lots of tiktok vids saying "I got rid of my smartphone and got superpowers", as they ironically, make the video with their smartphone.
Personally I think the web as we know it is going to be swallowed by unverifiable content which we can't tell is human or not.
We need to get more genuine and authentic and remain so. I appreciate your video where you can tell its human and real, without a load of editing scripting etc just speaking about your ideas and sharing your perspectives.

Smartphones are a challenge to replace. I don't see myself using VR devices on daily basis.

Great video, thanks. It’s been something that has been on my mind a lot lately. These companies are doubling down on a path that is ultimately hostile for users, but don’t care because the alternative, moderate and mindful use of tech, will hurt their bottom line. I feel rejecting this isn’t clinging to the past, but actually avant garde.
In a couple years we’ll pull out our phones a lot less. Be it talking to AI through our AirPods or something similar to Meta glasses. I am a homesteader, but I also want as much AI as possible. I want to use it myself & I want it to replace most people I interact with . I’d rather a machine take my order & make it correctly than deal with someone’s attitude & carelessness.
Totally with you on this. Tech has already peaked when it comes to ease of access and usefulness. Anywhere beyond a combination of a smartphone laptop and tv can only go downhill from here on out.
This exact sentiment has been shared by human beings over the last 150 years…
I think the cell phone is here to stay and we will go to a nano screen in the next 10 years. Off site hardware that streams to a screen with a camera and WiFi card (we see this happening now with cloud gaming). With a nano screen, it will allow you wear the phone due to the physical flexibility. I think our eyes will be a target market once we can put tech in our bodies without rejection.
I'm not a huge proponent on this idea either. However if this thing does take off gaining popularity - something to consider would be: will this new invention solve the problems of the smart phone that it currently causes? Will people be more present than they were before? Yes it is always on your head, but will people be looking up while driving more instead of staring down at their phone being distracted? Therefore, decide what's more important while in the moment. One other area of technology that this new invention poses a huge threat to is the television industry - since you will now have a mobile theater experience. Time will tell how this plays out. Either way, being mindful of how technology is affecting your life and only choosing what you really want/need is ultimately the best practice more than being a trendy device chimp.
I agree that mindfulness around technology needs to be at the forefront, but I do worry that these VR type experiences will enable distraction rather than help alleviate it. Unless certain locks are put in place you could probably watch a movie and drive while wearing the apple vision pro. Notifications and ads could literally pop up into our field of view, so I’m skeptical that people will become any more present or focused with these devices. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
Well, I wear glasses to see. With this Apple device does it accommodate glasses wearers? I have worn VR headgear with contacts in and after a while it gets uncomfortable and I have to give my eyes a rest. If this headgear is the direction they are going, they better make them extremely comfortable for vision impaired folks like me 😂.

I really, REALLY hope virtual reality headsets and smart glasses won't become the norm. Society as it is is already dealing with a lot of disconnection, due to people always looking at their phones. Virtual reality headsets and smart glasses will only make things much worse. I fear virtual reality will also lead to more depression and loneliness within society.
I really feel that it won't. Maybe it's hopeful thinking, I don't know...but I feel like the majority of what I see or people I know have quite adverse feelings about current technology let alone the new stuff. So many young people are seeking "old ways of life" (like using an iPod lol, fml), ways of disconnecting etc. But who knows, we are in a massive transitional period (which seems endless and ongoing as a millenial). I feel like I really hear young people when they say we had it made growing up in the 90s. (Granted I said the same about the 60s as a 90s kid)
@@mothbythesea I think VR's strength is it isn't convenient in every single occasion like a phone. I have a Meta Quest 3 and I don't think the tech will get anywhere to where I could use it 24/7 anytime soon. Unlike my phone, I don't get addicted to being in VR. Playing VR games is tiring so I don't play for hours at a time. It is perfect for playing for 30 mins to an hour with something simple like Eleven Table Tennis, Walkabout Mini Golf, or Beat Saber.
I feel like VR is great for bringing activities you do in real life into a digital replica where you are still moving and still being present if you are playing with a friend. It's great for board games and recreational activities. Also great for education and other things.
As someone who struggles with easily falling into dissociation, I always want to go back to real life and be present after I use VR for a little. VR currently makes me more present not less.
Great video! I fully agree with your points here. I already feel that way about smart-watches, I'm worried about having a computer on my wrist at all times, about all the data that can collect and sell to advertisers, about the mental-health impact of always being within reach of notifications, or just of always having so much technology near me.
Sure, smart-watches, just like mixed reality headsets do offer tons of cool features, but for now I reckon I'll hold out. If I can live without them, then so be it.
I'm relieved I got to grow up in a time where my imagination was my HUD. I wouldn't choose to be without this kind of tech now that it's here. But, I am so relieved it wasn't an option for most of my life.
For now i don´t see it becoming mainstream only if it reaches glasses form factor i can see the tech reach mass adoption, because wearing glasses is cool nowadays more than a decade ago you would be mocked for it.
Despite vr/ar enthusiats always yapping about 20 million of quest 2 sold, in a world of 8 billion and 1.5 billion gamers its still peanuts imo, the avp besides ´productivity´ and solo enterntainment i dont see what they are trying to do and the target demo seems to be tech bros,tech enthusiastic, people working in the fields of vr/ar and half a dozen randoms because they have enough disposable income.
Remenber how soon the 2015 ´vr´ hype died with google cardboard and samsung gear vr? even nowadays i read comments of people that have their vr/ar headset gathering dusk.

I'm running in the other direction of all of this. against the current for sure. quite frankly AI is terrifying. Look at how social media has changed people's brains. AI is going to do that on a super level. And of course it won't be from a non-bias source, it will be to push an agenda. People also don't see the health implications from wearing a device on their head (yes airpods and apple watches too) affect their health. I'm not against technology but at what point does this end? our lives are already super convenient and convenience is killing us. I would like to hear your thoughts around money and cashless systems as I see that as another means of control. My husband and I don't use cashless apps or credit cards because personally I don't like that it can be tracked or controlled, and it seems like another way to keep people in debt. Just some thoughts, love what you are talking about on this channel!

Exactly! But the profit motive and ad based model for everything prevents that I fear. If collecting and selling data is the way for companies to make money, then they need these all in ones to be as compelling as possible to encourage use, and unfortunately their main tool is distraction

The Vision Pro screams to me of a device that wants you to give Apple and its advertising partners unrestricted access to your time and attention. I think anyone who believes advancing technology brings people together is dead wrong, tech like Vision Pro will make us even further apart and only exacerbate depression and anxiety.

Technology will always progress but we've reached a point of diminishing returns. If you look at the differences between 1080p and 4k, you could argue the benefits of 4k resolution aren't an extreme leap. Moving beyond current tech standards will not improve our experience. The goal of consumer corporations will be to convince us this new tech is absolutely necessary

I remember in 2020 that all you zoomers were screeching that “muh metaverse” was going to completely assimilate society within a few years. Now it’s completely dead. I remember when everyone thought the iPad was going to completely destroy the laptop market. Nope. And comparing this to AirPods has to be peak zoomer. AirPods are just earbuds without cords. Literally just the same thing people were already doing but wireless. It’s already been ten years since “VR will take over the world in ten years.” Cringe.
But the phone industry ´killed´ the PC even tho smartphones are also dying that´s why they are searching for alternatives a lot of kids use smartphoness and don´t even know how to use a pc, The airpods still look goofy imo but it makes sense like you said is just earbuds without the cord, i still remember in ~2009 a lot of people had one bluethoot earphone and looked even goofier or later the earbuds connected by a cord behind your neck ect.
The ipad isn´t very popular in my country and people that have tablets are usually older people probably because they don´t see well anymore, also because smartphones become bigger that popular canibalized tablet sales, even smartwatchs not a lot of people have them, its not an uncommon sight but still.
