  • I quit my 9-5 job, and I'm NEVER going back.
    In 2018 I put in my resignation for my 9-5 office job, and today I'm talking a bit more about why I chose to leave this type of work and what I've done as an alternative since that time. Let me know what you think in the comments!

    I used to feel this way when I worked in an office. WFH was the best thing that happened to my career. I’m an engineer and only work four days a week. It’s amazing. At my last job they made us come back to the office and I left. If I had to be in an office though, I’d rather sing into Kurt Cobain’s microphone.

      Yea I work in an office that insist we come in 5 days a week even though we worked remote the entirety of the covid pandemic. Some people love it, I don't.

      Yeah that’s super rough when you got used to the wfh life and then had it taken away. My girlfriend is going through a similar thing with her company where every year they keep adding another day back in the office per week. We’ll see how much longer until it’s back to the full 5 again

    Your content just gets better and better!
    I work with 12 hrs shifts 2 days a week, the rest is mostly 8 - 5. I manage to make time for my life, hobbies and culture, but sometimes i fall short.
    A 9-5 job definitely allows more room to work on yourself, while giving you a stable income source. When i was working 8-5 some time ago, i had time for everything (also worked 10-15 min by car from my house), you just have to be disciplined.
    I hope soon, God willing, work 8-5 but earning more.
    I remember a friend once said: only the poor work a lot. The wealthy work less (meaning also spending less, being frugal and seeking spiritual happiness).

      Having less unnecessary expenses should be the goal and then work 4 days if its possible 😊

      Love that last quote! Definitely an important distinction between wealthy and rich, as you’ve outlined. A huge benefit you also mentioned is having a very short commute. Many people I know commute 1-1.5 hours each way to work. That really kills your ability to have a healthy self outside of work. Thanks for sharing your experience buddy!

    Thanks Spencer. I watched your "ramble" right through to the end and I can identify with much your feelings along the way. I have been retired form 9-5 for about 13 years now and in my 70's. I must say I love retirement and have been able to pursue things I want to in my own time including setting up my own youtube channel and blogs. There were times in my working life when I left 9-5 (twice) then went back to it because I still had a family to support. Still do for that matter.I did wedding photography part time as a self employed photographer for over 40 years on weekend.Some of my 9-5 jobs were not satisfying and I struggled. I now do lots of very satisfying voluntary work in aged care.I am still involved in photography but not for paying gigs.I understand your freelance in photography journey. One of my sons has done that and now works full time in the motion film industry. I have always encouraged my sons to pursue their dreams.I encourage you on your journey. cheers Geoff from Adelaide ,Australia

    Good on you for that Spencer! Nothing worth having in life is easy, that's why I've got 2 little girls 😂 I'm a postman in the UK and my contract is 4 days a week 31 hours so I get Sunday, Monday and Tuesday off every week and my wife is a nurse so she does 3 days a week of 12 hours. We both love our jobs so we're happy 😊
    Once I'm out of the office after a couple of hours I'm my own boss just outside delivering, listening to music /podcasts, it's really nice most of the time

      @spencers-adventures  Před 19 dny +1

      Adam, the way you talk about it being a postman is on my list as a second career option! It sounds like you and your wife have a good balance with your jobs - my mom’s a nurse too and she works a 4 on 5 off schedule that I could see being pretty decent for free time. Sounds like a great deal getting to be outside for work and listen to podcasts all day!

      Oh nice I think you may have mentioned that before? Or maybe it was someone else I watch 😂 kirsty is also doing a masters atm to become a neonatal nurse practitioner so she'd be able to prescribe medicine to the premature babies as well, like doctors can.
      Yeah it's a balancing act with 2 little girls as well as Aubrey isn't at school yet for another couple of years 😅
      It's not a bad deal I'll admit but it's not an easy job either like some people think it is

    I’m lucky that I work a job that is from 7:30 am to 2:20 pm five days a week. I live close by so I can be home by 2:30 or 3:00 if I stop to pick up a few things. The work isn’t too taxing and nobody really bothers me…I do look forward to retiring in a few years, though!

    i hope i can break free too, hopefully sooner than i imagined. its too difficult now as i have to support my parents and siblings (😭) its such a burden being a sandwich generation and a 9-5 adds more stress to that 😢 with job uncertainty, i do not have the courage to resign, even selling my beloved collections proven to be a difficult endeavor as people dont buy as many stuff anymore, let alone collectible items😢

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  Před 17 dny

      It’s definitely tough to break from steady work when you have people you’re supporting with that work. I think just getting more flexibility in your current work if possible is a best case scenario here, like remote work if possible or moving to another similar job that offers such flexibility. Not always possible but worth looking into!

  • @endah08
    @endah08 Před 19 dny +2

    Hard to argue that salaried jobs are not more stable than freelancing but I think the difference is often exaggerated. Salaried jobs often offer the illusion of job security but really, that company could go bust any time, they might need to tighten their belts because of another recession and then you're gone with maybe a month's salary looking for another job. Something I've noticed working freelance is that I really don't even need that much money because I have time to myself and it's so often a lack of time that leads to outrageous spending. You always have the option to take on more work if you need it for a while. I can find a cheaper place to live because I don't commute at rush hour and maybe I'm only commuting 3 days a week instead of 5 for example.

  • @shugyosha7924
    @shugyosha7924 Před 19 dny +1

    As soon as I entered the workforce I was confused because everything is 9-6 (where were all the 9-5s?). Add on to that overtime for a lot of jobs and a commute and there is no time left in the day. I honestly don't understand how people do it. I was thankfully able to transition to remote work and can usually find time to work out or cook. But when I was commuting to an office, there was no space left to both eat clean and go to the gym and sleep 8 hours, let alone do hobbies. It's crazy.

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  Před 17 dny

      Agreed, especially factoring in the commute, it’s so hard to carve out enough personal time for good mental health

      @@spencers-adventures Yeah. That's why the last 4 years I've been pouring any spare time I can muster into a personal business. I really hope I can transition to doing it full time. I wouldn't mind a salary hit for a while if it gave me the freedom to work for myself.

    I was able to work remotely in media for awhile, and was planning on getting back into the film industry. But a great job opportunity came to me. Thinking I could save up for the move I took it, never thinking I would like it as much as I do or enjoy the coworkers and the atmosphere as much as I do. And, I got health insurance just in time for me to get diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.. and they are paying most of that bill which is a God send.. Do I still dream of leaving a 9 to 5, absolutely; do I work on my creative side when I can, yes... but right now its nice to be supported.

      @spencers-adventures  Před 17 dny +1
