- From the marshy wetlands of the East Anglian fens, Hereward the Wake led a desperate Anglo-Saxon rebellion against the rule of the Norman King, William the Conqueror. This is the story of Hereward, a Saxon nobleman who went on to embody English resistance to Norman oppression.

I neglected to explain what Hereward's epithet 'Wake' means - it most likely means 'watchful', or else relates to the Anglo-Norman Wake family, in order to claim descent from Hereward!
Mate love your channel! Just found it today. So stoked. I’ve been obsessed with British history all my life. My Grandfather was Welsh Nanna Irish and my mum Liverpudlian, so I was surrounded by it. When I finally had the time a d money to go over there, I got cancer, so after finally going into remission we planned it again, then… the bloody Cancer came back! So sadly I don’t think I’ll get to go over there now, I’m gutted. But channels like this I can still immerse myself into it all, I just won’t ever get to see it in real life. I’ll take what I can get. I’m just so glad that one of my children got to go over there, I lived vicariously through her haha. Thanks for the time and effort you put into these Videos. Cheers from Australia mate. Ps. Remember always wear sun cream haha.
@@TheSonicdruid72 I'm so glad you're enjoying these videos and that they're giving you a slice of British history!! Perhaps you will get to visit one day, I hope so - I have some distant family in Australia so I'm hoping I can visit over there at some point! It's been a typically wet british summer, I wish I'd needed more suncream!
Snuck is not a word, it's just slang from America. Sneaked is correct.
snuck is a word mate💀@@spudspuddy
@@paicandinarkhail7255 Sneaked. Snuck is just slang used by people who can't speak properly.
Excellent video, I'm always amazed that so many English people have never heard of Hereward the Wake.
FEEL MY POWER!!!
*Rebellion Blade!*
Nice presentation. Thank you. Hereward is a fascinating, possibly mythical character, linked in with the legend of Lady Godiva. I read Charles Kingsley's novel as a child and loved it. My own suspicion is that Hereward is composite character made up from a number of Anglo-Saxon rebels who resisted William I after Hastings.
Good call to switch between edited video and real life footage, makes the video more engaging. Thank you for another quality video.
Excellent little video - well done and thank you.
Love the obscure topics! And the face reveal 🤣 this channel is about to blow up
Thank you 😄 I'll keep them coming!
Obscure? This is English History. If it's 'obscure' to you it's because you've made it that way!
great information REspect to all that fight for their freedom
Very well done. Hope to see more.
Great video! There is a fen north of Ely called Burnt Fen, allegedly Herward instructed some of his rebels to torch the land as a distraction so Hereward could escape Ely and fight another day. Not found a physical reference to this though, only word of mouth. A good story nonetheless!
Thank you!! I'd heard of Burnt Fen before, but never the story behind the name!
Fascinating subject and a fantastic video. Very well made. It’s production quality is something of channels with hundreds of thousands of subs. Well done, and consider me subscribed!
Thank you so much!!
He's like an Uhtred of Bebbanburg type of character.
Hereward is a true Cambridgeshire hero where I live. He defied the invading Normans. Go to Ely and see.
Bernard Cornwells book about Hereward is great, a work of faction admittedly but it’s wort a look at if you’re into this stuff.
Underated warrior
This video makes me feel like I went back in time. Not to Saxon times but the 80s the era of mullets and pornstashes
Really dig the video tho just busting balls
Hahaha I appreciate that, maybe time I had a trim
Great video never heard of this guy
The conqueror disgusts me. What a cruel, rapacious bastard
Is there an online pdf of Gesta Herewardii with English translation?
There's a translation here: archive.org/details/fenlandnotesquer3189pete/page/n437/mode/2up
His story is so cool, shame it's so obscure. First heard about him through the English sci-fi/steampunk band The Mechanisms.
Wheeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyy love seeing a mechs fan out in the wild!
And to return on 2066 😮
What does 'wake' mean?
the watchful
@@eddiejohn7744 Thank you.
It is said also that Hereward's battle cry when attacking Normans was 'Awake! Awake!' (At least according to Charles Kingsley.)
@@williamkz Thank you.
