If he had won at Hastings, Harold Godwinson would have been one of the best kings that the English ever had. Even Harold Hardrada would have ruled England with a lot more generosity than William. Both England and France would have been spared the next 400 years of wrecking wars and atrocities by Norman & Plantagenet kings. Brilliant and clear explanations in this video.
Now if your English you more than likely have Norman ancestry as well.. But William won that battle at hastings as a form of luck the Saxons were winning if they wouldn't have broke the shield wall and advanced the Normans they would have won they broke the shield wall leaving Harold with his body gaurds alone
This was the comment I was looking for. You’re giving those who suffered under their oppression a voice they were denied. Thank you, from a northerner. ❤
I agree that if Godwinson won at Hastings, he would have been known as one of the greatest warrior Kings of the age, having repelled 2 invasions. People also forget how close he was to winning at Hastings. Thank you so much for watching the video! I hope you enjoyed it!
It is doubtless the greatest tragedy the English ever faced, but we fared better than many other civilisations who were completely wiped out in similar conquests.
It is so very sad that 'our King Harold' (as described in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle) did not allow himself a recovery period of a couple of months after his great victory over Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge. Then he could have called up further military support from the Midlands and West Country. Hit and run forces could have harassed William's army. If only King Harold had taken his younger brother Gyrth's advice to play a longer game, it is hard to see how William of Normandy would have achieved any success at all. An English victory would have spared the the folk of England from suffering so much under the monetary burdens and huge losses of young men over 400 years of deranged Norman and Plantagenet warfare against the equally innocent people of France.
Agreed is Harold would have won at Hastings he would have been remembered as one of Englands greatest warrior kings. I have deep respect for the man as although it could be argued he was a usurper he was still a man of action and went out like a boss at Hastings being killed on his feet and slain by Norman knights instead of submitting

Who apparantly learned English has a teenager and was attacked by other Aristocrats for being able to speak it. John also insisted that his son who became Henry III be taught English. William's entire claim to the English throne with the stories of Harold breaking his oath etc., are bluntly very dubious. Edward the Confessor promising him the throne is bluntly dubious also. England became his by right of conquest. And if you want evidence of how the English regarded his claim the fact he ended up replacing ther majority of the English Aristocracy with foreigners to England is evidence enough.
