I've recently discussed the elusive and mysterious Kurtzhau or the Shortened strike with a friend of mine. Naturally, it's no longer a mysterious or a secret strike but there are some properties of it that still escape our attention. I hope you enjoy the short video made like in ye olden days and that it will be at least a bit useful to you.
Many of you are asking me, either here or in private messages about the release of new videos. I still want to make plenty of them but life has been incredibely busy for me in the last few years. Ever since SIGI blew up my life has been sword 25 hours a day/8 days in a week (pun intended) and working both on videos and finishing the translation of my book is far from my priorities. But things are better now so I hope to get these thing sorted out.
Thanks for nagging me and see you around.

Hi all, I'm happy to be back (though I never really left :)). I have a number of videos and online lessons similar to this planned, also the continuation of my old series (and some other stuff). Creating videos like this is 'expensive'; takes me lots of hours of work (Learn Longsword or Learn Rapier videos can take up to 36 hours of clean time to finish, video like this is usually a working day + preparation), there's gear and other stuff (and not to forget the practical experience needed). If you like my videos and if they are helpful to you, please consider contributing at www.buymeacoffee.com/martinfabian. I plan to update this page with subscription and premium perks as time goes.
Thank you for being awesome and see you soon with a lesson on "breaking the Ochs".
Cheers.
Martin: here is a short video on the kurtzhaw
HEMA community: it's the messiah!
Martin: the Kurtzhaw really is an interesting conce-
*THE MESSIAH!
I should rewatch and read the text now.
LISAN AL GAIB!
WE'RE ALL INDIVIDUALS! 😂
THE RETURN OF THE KING!
*Twerking
you mean the *Twerking*?
@@miku9152 I think that should be Zwerking, Twerking is something else entirely....
THE RETURN
You returned the day I returned to my HEMA class. I'll go more often now
Le same same, has arrived.
Footwork is key here.
Clean zufechten, stopping, prepare with structure and go in again. A nice lesson!
I will take this for my next 4 week block in our school
Thank you very much, Martin!
I love the short quick bits of communication alongside the fencing work, shows great training dynamics
HE’S BACK BABYYYYYY 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Legend returns 😊
In this hour, I do not believe that any darkness will endure
Peaceful music disguising the brutality of this technique
i love it, but I desire to hear the martin's narrator voice once again ...
Finally another great video:D
"MOM, DAD, GET IN HERE, NEW MARTIN VIDEO!"
Eyyyyyyyy short lesson for short cut letsgoooooo
Thanks for sharing your insights and welcome back :)
i love ur videos and im happy that a new one came out
Excellent demonstration!
A short lesson with waltz in A minor by Chopin (I love this poland legend too).
What to keep in mind: if you are in a room with Martin Fabian and a sword, RUN!!!
Yes the return please make more videos sir
My favourite sequence is kurtzhau -> shoving away opponent's sword by un-crossing the arms -> cut to the neck a wide step to the left or a duplieren on the outside if shoving away the sword failed. But the options with the thrusts you demonstrate are way more simple and efficient. I'll try these as well; I've adapted my sequence from messer and I've never actually studied longsword-specific descriptions of kurtzhau. ;D
well done, my friend
Hmmm very interesting concept. I'll probably stay away from it for now, because I can see a lot of potential doubles, as long as I am a beginner sparring with mostly other beginners
Also, welcome back king
Long time no see!😁
I great technique... one I hope not everyone will know.
IM YOUR NUMBER ONE FAN
LISAN AL GAIB
On a more serious note, you seem to be using the kurtzhaw here more so as a preparation rather than as a response to an already existing cut like ringeck and danzig say, have you done any experimentation with using it in that way?
@@blarpus this is just a demo how it works, you can use it in variety of situations. the difference between preparation and response in the eyes of a fencer is very different than that of spectators. hence my other dilemma I once described on my FB HEMA page about the difference between ansetzen and absetzen. at a certain point and speed it becomes one 'setzen'.
If I recall correctly Meyer describes this in the "third book on longsword fencing" (the one with the poem in the beginning) as "opponent lifts sword, you cross the sword" and that is also a variety of times and situations.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (all that needs to be said)
Martin, do you believe that mentioned in kurtzhaw glossa durchwechseln this time doesn't mean disengage, but simply appearing under enemy sword or this auswinden thrust? How does this interpretation fit with kurtzhaw as counter to ochs? This is really mind buggling, countering ochs with kurtzhaw still seems like overkill to me (example - short kurzhaw places me already behind enemy ochs, why should I disengage which source ask me to do? But then, If I can thrust under enemy ochs with such simple motion, why coming vom tag anyway?).
This is for a longer discussion and my next 'short lesson' video will be about the breaking of ochs, including the kurzhaw:
-it fits 100%, there are 4 images of a 'kurtzhau' (if we count Talhoffer but we should), see my intro
-it is not an overkill actually, in order to understand why you have to understand all the other 'breakings' of ochs and their pros and cons
-there are the following ways of disengaging (zucken aside) 1) long into long 2) long into short. You can do the long into short in 2 ways, kurtzhau is the second one
-have a look at goliath breaking of duplieren in the zwerchhau section, there's a pic of a similar ending position
-just for illustration czcams.com/video/j1wVdw0tz90/video.html
I don't think this should be a primary way of countering ochs or reacting to cuts, it's just a peculiar technique which might sometimes be a better choice if the conditions are correct. But that applies for many other complex techniques.
@@MartinFabian thank you for the reply! Can't wait to see the next short lesson! :)
Lisan al Gaib!!!
😈
wait, is that a new feder?
Yeah, we're using the sigi lights
Hi, just wanted to be the first to hate on the pokey spaghetti.
