- CORRECTION: Near the beginning I say it now has an ST front end, that was the vocal equivalent of a typo...it's an R80GS front end.
This video is a technical walk round of my R80G/ST (originally an 1982R80ST). I've been using this bike for off-road racing, greenlaing, tours around Europe and as transport for my job as a professional photographer. I've tried to stay true to the style & feel of it's era, while making the bike my own individual piece.
This video is quite long with a lot of talking, not really designed as an entertainment, but I'm hoping in there I answer lots of questions people might have about airhead off-road builds and also converting an R80ST. Below are the chapters incase your interested in a specific part:
00:00 Intro
00:40 Front end - R80ST to R80GS fork conversion, including front wheel, disc & top yokes
02:46 Tommaselli Offroad Handlebars & Wunderlich bar raisers
03:39 Footpegs - Lower footpeg brackets from Hyperpro + KTM 690 Footpegs
05:43 Brake & gear lever adjustments
07:43 Bash plate / Sump guard + G/S Sump & Pickup
08:50 Hyperpro G/S rear shock with remote reservoir (air thingy)
09:58 Why remote reservoir shocks are better
10:42 Metzeler M/C 360 & Michelin Anakee Wild review
11:57 R80GS Tank fitted to R80ST
12:22 R80G/S Paris Dakar seat and rear rack
13:13 BMW R80ST original exhaust system plus heat shield
14:38 R80ST 800cc Engine for offroading
15:46 How to lockwire BMW airhead carb float bowls
16:44 Left hand side stand and the horrendous BMW R80ST original
17:57 Thanks for watching!

Cool bike, great content, keep up the good work
Yay another video love your vids thanks for doing content that I like
Very nice information, thanks a lot. I‘m myself driving the 1991 gs and also had the shit in my pants because of the sidestand auto-snap situation. I‘ve had the sidestand modulated with a new spring set up and some welding. It works great even with the default sidestand.
Absolutely fantastic, mega interesting, you've inspired me to start putting my R80ST back together - thank you.
Great to hear, happy projecting and any questions along the way feel free to ask
@@bigberthaontour Thank you so much, you are a super star 😀👍
This channel is absolutely awe inspiring. Your monolever airhead R80 with the Dakar tank looks so epic. And the quality of your content is through the roof. Your channel is going to blow up and I’m going to be there for the ride. 😊 Keep it up.
Cheers for the optimism! Glad your enjoying but between you and me it’s a GS tank with some Dakar stickers on it! Looks nice tho :-)
Thank you very much mate…!! : )
Thx brother, from Belgium Bob
Well that’s awesome. I may well get back on mine this spring and start modding it for the roads out here. Must be a good vid if I watched it all! 😂👍
Who’s says no-ones got an attention span these days…you survived 100% info 0% entertainment! 🎉
What bike are you modding?
@@bigberthaontour ha! Maybe this is where I’m going wrong 🤔😂 An 84 R80G/S, after some green lanes something has failed in the forks and I’m blowed if I can find the issue. It’s not like they’re complicated!! It’s sat sadly with its forks in pieces for many months now 😞
You must’ve been going some to do that! Good excuse for a new trick front end I reckon! 🎉
@@bigberthaontour well your DRZ comment did lift an eyebrow! 😁
During the mid 1980s when I attended the Sydney Institute of Technology, I'd park my BMW R65LS near a BMW R80GS. I'd check it out and could never work out the purpose of this bike. Road bike, dirt bike, scrambler. What was it? Today, I'd have one at the blink of an eye.
nice
Very nice content, thank you. Could you give me some more info about the lowering brackets for the foot pegs?
You can get them from the team at Hyperpro. If you contact them they'll be able to sort you out with some
Completely changed the feel of the bike, a lot more confident riding it since adding them
this bike has inspired me to trade my klr for an air head, i have to have one.
It’s up for sale if you want it…one careful lady owner
@@bigberthaontour lol, from one old lady to another......
Love the bike, great video to boot.
I love all your madness! Can you provide some details on Stubbs bike? I have an R80/7 I’d like to thrash.
If you go to Rusty Nuts CZcams he’s done a full run down on it!
Also based In Wales and have started modifying a cs 100 into some sort of Dakar Rep, but have come to the reality that I want something to use. Just strengthening the frame at the moment, be interested to know what options are best for the fork conversion, DRz is an interesting option
The hyperpro guys in Holland all ride pretty heavy duty trials with theirs and they all do DRZ400 conversion so they can’t be too far wrong. GS front end wasn’t a huge improvement although made it a bit more rideable off-road
Do they have any links to their builds ? Do they use the newer DRZ upside down ? Thanks
Hello, I've mounted a Migsel stand. easy to install and to maneuver. the spring have two position: automatic retract or not.
Cool I’ll check them out
Finally bought one, bloody expensive but it is very well made. Cheers
Hi Owen what size anakee wilds would fit on the back? suspect 120 max?
I had a 120 on there, looked pretty snug!
Could you provide the specifications of the Hyperpro rear shock. Following your video I am now hesitating. Initial intention was the Ohlins. Thanks
@@garyhoward4064 hi Gary, I’ve met the hyperpro team and they are all hardcore airhead nerds so they’re the ideal guys for building your shock. Best thing to do is give them a call and tell them exactly want you want to do with it. They’re Dutch but all speak great English
About real wheel size, the older models GS have an 18 inch. The more recent models have a 17 inch. I would like to fit a rear 18 inch on mine. Do you know if the old 18 inch rear wheel can plug and play on?
Sorry that one is beyond my knowledge. Wonder why they downsized...
@@bigberthaontour To make it more "roadable"
@@garyhoward4064 ah yeah that'd make sense
Did it originate as a monolever or did you convert it? I didn't think monos existed until 87?
Both the original ST and G/S were monolevers, paralevers were the ones that came in at ‘87 and have the additional torque arm underneath
You said there are single seats of a better quality, can you tell me wich brand i do have to find for better comfort, please…!!
Sure
I bought just the siebenrock foam on its own and that massively improved the comfort of my cheap seat. So if I was to buy the whole unit new I'd go for them.
Thank you mate..!!
What kind of headlight did you put on?
It's just the standard ST headlight. I've got a grill just taped over it to protect the glass
Owen, I see you have a mudflap between the rear wheel and the Gearbox/battery. What is it and how did you attach it?
Mate I have no idea where that came from. It says triumph on it 🤣 but it seems like a bloody good idea!
@@bigberthaontour Hahaha, glad you discovered a new feature on your awesome bike!
Yes block your competitors with you Panzar, I like it.
?
@@bigberthaontour I refer to BMW boxer bikes as Panzer's (spelling) because they are big, wide and heavy.
Why not better forks? DRZ forks work very well but need specific triple clamps (available on adv rider)
I guess I wanted to keep it roughly in keeping with the parts of the time. If I did it again I’d probably go down that route
@@bigberthaontour DRZ forks and ‘Prutser’ triples work great on an airhead, completely changes the ride
A proper Y-pipe will be a huge upgrade.
Hi Laurens. What’s the benefit of the Y pipe?
@@bigberthaontour I am not the original commenter, but still wanted to give my two cents. The owners of HPN (Halbfeld and Pepperl) once tested all exhaust setups out there. The most beneficial exhaust setup is the SR-Racing exhaust (once sold by Siebenrock as SGS2). Forbthe other exhaust setups they found out that the original exhaust collector is the best power wise. A Y-tube on the other hand will drop the weight significantly. You save around 2 kg and another kg by not having dirt collect on the collector while riding in muddy terrain.
Had a very nice ST that sold last month. Was all original, so it would be a pity to do any changes on it or to make a GS out of it.
Yeah I'd agree, the ST is a nice bike in it's own right. Big Bertha came from a bit of a wreck!
@@bigberthaontour can you tell me where did you buy that extended rear brake part, please..!
@@felixs.a.3163 Hi Felix, sorry I don't understand which bit you mean, can you be more specific
Everything’s G/S on this ST 😂
I think it says ST on the reg documents, that’s about it!
Btw I’m the first one to watch
Well done Iori, now if you can get through all 19 minutes without falling asleep you definitely deserve a prize!
