I have watched countless videos on paddleshifters and this by far the best video that I have found that explains it. All the other videos assume that you already know when to upshift/downshift. I never learned how to drive a manual, but I recently bought a Automatic car that has paddleshifters that I really want to try to use. Thanks for the help!!
You are very welcome! That is exactly what I thought before making this video - nobody explains the details (: Awesome, have fun using them! Glad I could help out (:
Same experience
Same. Thank you 💯
Underrated video, this is the only video I’ve seen that actually helped me drive with paddles. Thanks for the help!
You are very welcome! (: Feel free to share it with your friends if you found it useful (:
Very well explained, my favorite video on downshifting and up shifting , you answered the questions that were annoying me for months.
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it!
@@thekingofmuscle7021 AND done on a perfect example vehicle, SRT baby
This should be pinned, 5 years old and it is thorough, with subsequent deep dive links to up/down - and under ten minutes. Nice job!
Thank you I can’t wait to try this out. I was using my auto stick in my neighborhood on hills and I recalled a Manuel lesson I got in a bumblebee and I lucked up and was shifting right in my car. Now I understand the shifting better.
Thanks man, i've been learning how to stunt drive my '18 TA Plus. I just did a hellcat 2.62 diff swap so learning to properly pedal through the gears is a must for me!
Hell of a video, watching you upshift on the dash and downshift really helped.
After watching this video my brain cells finally understand
Only video that has actually showed me something thank you 🙏🏽
Best Video on youtube about this topic, many don't hint on how to shift especially keeping legs on the throttle
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for, thank you so much!
This is the best first video on this topic. straight to the point and shows dashboard. I'm surprised it took so long to find a video like this but am very glad you made it
Thank you so much! 🙂
Just got my first car with paddle shifters, will definitely try it next time I'm behind the car. Really good video man!
This is the best explanation I seen. Thank you so much!!!
Have watched so many videos, and this is by far the best explanation. Thanks!
You are very welcome! (:
OMG THE best Tutorial video of using paddle shifters thank you!!!!!!!💪💪💪💪
Great video this really helped me!!
So concise! Thanks for sharing bro!! Greetings from Jamaica😎👊🏾
This helped me so much. Thank you!!!
My friend taught me to upshift a little after 3 rpm and downshift a little after 2 rpm
Wow, thanks for the crisp explanation! It makes a lot more sense now.
Glad I could help! That was my main goal 🙂
Awesome video man!!
This video made it click for me , each gear has a power band and the lower gears have smaller power bands but that means they can get to lower speeds faster than the higher gears with higher power bands. I subscribed! btw keep it up
Exactly! And thank you so much! (:
Clear explanation, well done
Best video explaining how it works
best video out there bro
Definitely a great video bro! There’s a lot of videos that couldn’t break it down as simple as that

Thanks for this clear explaination in a nutshell. I recently bought Elantra N Line with DCT turbo engine. I had difficulty finding a video that explains from the very basic. Your video so far is the best for understanding the basic concept about the paddle shifter for a guy who had faintest idea about it. Thanks.
You are very welcome!
I fairly recently bought a Camaro SS with paddles and after having driven manual, the habit on not letting off the gas and pressing the dead pedal to shift took a second to adjust to, if I don't drive it for a while that habit comes back briefly. I bet that Elantra is fun!
Bro this is the best explination on this entire platform😭😭

@@thekingofmuscle7021 one more question; when cruising in regular drive mode, how do you properly switch to manual and shift from there? If you made a video on that already, let me know.
Just switch the shifter into manual without any worry it basically turns off that computer and it is in your hands after that so it is alright to do so nothing else needed

I have a 2018 Ford focus 1.5 diesel, my question is that here in Italy the speed limit on most roads is 50 know so while I'm driving at that speed should I be in 3rd reving @2000 for 10 minutes or so ...or should I be in 4th at 1500? The reason I ask is i want to cause less damage possible to engine.
it sounds like the Borat is giving me a driving lesson. 8/10 overall video rating
does your car jerk at all when you downshift?
Thanks 👍
Goat
Can i downshift while accelerating for the extra speed? Or should i lift off the throttle before i downshift and then accelerate again?
when downshifting, should I put my foot on the brake and then downshift while foot is still on break, or can I just take my foot of the acceleration pedal and downshift without my foot on the brake or acceleration pedal?
Casually driving at 5k rpms 😂😂 I like this guy
gooood job
My only question here, Going from 50 to 0 approaching a stoplight, Just downshift periodically to first gear?
In that case what if you have to come to a sudden emergency stop, do i now also need to worry about what gear im in?
Thanks for all advice
what is the purpose of downshifting and up shifting and when would you use them
KING OF MUSCLE
I just wanna know that my collant gauge just keep going up and down like yours is that normal ??
So my question is do you accelerate as you downshift or let off the gas
Yeah mine lets you but instantly you know ypur in the wrong gear it slows down till you down shift untill it's ready mine seems a little more difficult i wish. It wouldnt let mw upahift when i shouldnt
Great video man! Just a question… can u mess up the transmission if u miss a gear or go to low on the RPM?
This has probably already be understood but just in case from my own driving experience the answer is no. Manual in automatic cars which is what I’ll assume you’re driving are essentially “computer operated, driver input” transmissions so the car can’t directly shift from 4th to 2nd, something that can damage the transmission if you cause the car to go into redline for example, as automatic gears cycle through whilst shifting down so you never really just jump like you can through manual transmission. This also means the car can’t directly shift from 3rd to 6th. This in mind, you can shift up and put your car in higher gears whilst driving (something the car does to lower RPM and put less strain on the engine when it left in automatic) and nothing will happen. The car “cycles” through the gears and can’t jump up gears like a manual transmission can so the computer safely goes through the gears whilst up shifting and downshifting.
Hey man, is it safe to downshift from 3rd to 2nd and give it gas to slowdown smoothly? or thats bad for the transmission? Im having fun driving in manual mode on a lexus but I dont know if Im damaging it cause when I down shift it jerks but its not on the redline.
It should be fine, u don't even need to give it gas. If u do not downshift and just slow down to a complete stop u will notice that the car downshifted for u all the way to the 1st gear so u don't have to give it any gas when downshifting since the car didn't when it downshifted itself, just keep downshifting at appropriet rpms until a complete stop. And remember the later you downshift the less ur car is in the higher rpms which means the easier it is for ur car. It is totally fine to downshift in high rpms as long as you don't go into a red zone (crossing red line) but that extra tiny bit of stress on the engine is not needed when you are going a complete stop anyways (:
Bro so for upshifting you keep foot on the gas. What about to downshift do you keep on the gas? No right? Because you downshift when rpms are going down?
why does it say you're only putting down 200 ft pounds of torque? my sxt does 250
even though it was in Km and not Mph, this was the only helpful video, gonna try this on my 18’ accord 2.0T
greatttttt
7:00 I’m definitely a spiritual driver every once and a while
I have a dodge charger scatpack. Does the car automatically downshift for you if you press on the brakes when approaching a stop light? Or do you have to use the downshift paddle to get to a stop?
I believe it should, try it out and you'll know for sure. No harm in trying 🙂
You don't have to down shift. It will just do it
So when you cruising you shift at 2-3 rpm’s but if you race you use higher? And if so does it hurt the trans shifting higher daily?
Yes, and no it shouldn't, but the engine would be working harder all the time. No point of doing that without an actual reason though. Do it when you need accelerate faster
This videos are really helpful , literally the examples I needed I have a better understanding now thank you. I just have a question, when I downshift do I use the brake pedal or it’s done by the - negative sign in the gears ?
I'm super glad they are helping you so much (: you don't use the break paddle at all. If u are in automatic mode then usually to get a car to downshift u have to press gas harder for it to realise "Hey he wants more power there is a limit of amount of power I can give him at these low rpms so I gatta downshift to try to give him more power that he is asking for" but when you are in a manual mode then you just downshift where ever you need to by either pulling the gear shifter towards the negative sign or by the paddle on a steering wheel marked "-" if your car is equipped with those (: make sure to not go into a red zone, ie above the red line on the rpms when downshifting (:
@@thekingofmuscle7021 when you down shift does your foot stay on the gas pedal like you said to do for up shifts?
When I downshift I am either off the gas pedal completely ie I am trying to come to a complete stop at a red light (engine breaking) or I keep my foot consistent and steady and applying a good amount of throttle when I am trying to downshift to get going faster. (ie u driving uphill, u applying consistent throttle, u feel like ur car is starting to slow down or having a hard time going up, you don't do anything with the foot, ie keep it consistent and steady, down shift with paddles or shifter (if save to do so based on ur rpms ie if they are not too high already). Then he rpms would jump up, ie u have downshifted and you will feel a bit of boost in power of ur car then you can change the throttle input if you need to 🙂 so basically don't change up throttle input at the same time as changing gears cus it's a computer (an old one tbh, ur smartphone is probably faster lol) and it might get confused. 🙂
@@thekingofmuscle7021 thanks I usually downshifted at red lights coming to a stop just to make some vroom vroom noise lol. I’d downshift and keep my foot of the gas when coming to a stop or I’d downshift and then tap the brake if I need in case I needed to stop a little faster. Downshifting and using the brake if needed is fine right? That’s the only thing I can’t find to many things on
Yeah breaking like that should be fine 🙂 I do that all the time too lol just yeah don't downshift when you are at the red line since then ur engine will go past the red line as rpms would increase when u are downshifting 🙂
I am wanting to use my downshift and upshift since I was just made aware of what the heck those ‘+’ and ‘-‘ signs in my car mean. 😒 After five years of having the car. So, I’ve rewatched and rewatched and have a few questions.
When I downshift to accelerate after being at a complete stop, do i then upshift as I get to 5/6 rpms? Also, what about when I am just cruising? There are times when I let my foot off the gas and just cruise, so Do I leave gear where it is at that point? It seems when I’m in manual mode my rpms are around 4/5, which seems high. I don’t know if that made sense.
No worries, so when you come to a complete stop your car will downshift all the way to first gear even if u didn't. As you start accelerating your rpms start climbing; 1,000... 2,000... 3,000... Etc you can upshift at almost anypoint in time. Usually when you drive not too aggressive you will upshift maybe around 50% up to the red line (let's say redline in your car starts at 6,000 rpms then you would upshift at 3,000). Now if you want to accelerate the fastest way possible you will upshift at the highest rpms possible. Let's say right before redline or right at it. That would give your car the most power to accelerate fastest it can. Since in 99.9% of cars the horsepower and torque you get from the engine is higher at redline than when rpms are below it.
When you are cruising you are not accelerating at all so you can leave the car the way it is and not change the gears at all. But because of the vaccum that moving pistons inside the engine create the higher your rpms when you are cruising the faster your car will start to slow down. You can try that urself when you are driving down the road cruise at 2,000 rpm vs 4,500 rpms. You will hear and see that the car starts slowing down faster at 4,500 rpms. This is basically called engine breaking. Many people use that to go down hills to not burn out the breaks, or to slow down the car without breaks when breaks failed or you just want to save them and not replace them as often. You are basically breaking with vaccum inside engine which is totally fine for the engine but is noisier for outside since you are in higher rpms. That's why many times in residential areas you can see signs "No engine breaking". And when you done cruising you will want to either accelerate or break. If you want to break you can just use break paddle and either downshift as the car rpms are getting lower and lower or just come to a complete stop and it will downshift all the way for you. OR if you want to accelerate when you done cruising you will press gas paddle and based on your rpms at that given moment (ie the gear you are in) the car will accelerate accordingly. If your rpms got pretty low while cruising the car will accelerate much slower. So you might have to downshift to get rpms back up and accelerate faster. Also it is better to cruise at lower rpms since the engine isn't working as hard and that could help you save more fuel. It's more like imagine trying to run super fast but actually not running fast; you are swinging you arms fast and moving legs super fast but barely moving forward, ie almost running on one spot. You will get tired much faster. That's same as rpms when rpms are high and they don't need to be that high you can just cruise at a lower rpms if you don't need to accelerate super super fast you will just burn up more gas for no reason.
I may not be perfect but I've Always listened to the engine
Quick question.. is there a reason why your car is pushing about 11 torque while you’re at a complete stop? My scat pack is doing the same thing and I’m not sure as to why or if it’s a bad thing. Thanks.
Think it's idle so the torque it uses when not pressing on the gas just letting it move on its own
Beautifully explained! One question..if you’re using the tiptronic instead of the paddle shifters, do you need to keep the accelerator pressed while up shifting or do you take your foot off the accelerator..in case of using tiptronic..
🙂 Well paddles and the gear lever do the same exact thing. They are both called tiptronic. Tiptronic just means you can switch gears in you automatic car manually wether you switch by paddles or the gear lever it doesn't matter they work in the same way 🙂
@@thekingofmuscle7021 hey man, I have a question; when downshifting for higher rpms, do u have to take your foot off the gas when downshifting or can your foot be on the gas and downshift for higher rpms? Thanks!
The King of Muscle would you advice buying IVT petrol over diesel AT torque converters as on today’s date? I’m from India btw
Can you paddle down shift ,gas it a bit, then down shift, gas it a little .I sometimes do it makes my car pop more.Is it bad to do that though?
I don't think it will do anything bad as long as you give ur car a proper time to downshift and then press gas not just gas it right away as you pressed downshift lol
Do a reverse one
When you downshift , do you hold on the break or do you let go of it ?
You can do it either way it will be fine 🙂 depanding how quickly you wanna come to a stop you can break and downshift with the car all the way to stop of just downshift and downshift until your car stops
Can I downshift while braking? Can I downshift really quickly without damaging the car( Ex: 4th to 1st gear by clicking the paddle quickly)? Does every car downshifts for you when you stop? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to put it all in one thread.
1) depends on how fast you’re going and what your RPM’s are. Dont downshift too quickly if your RPM’s are above ~4000.
2) yes cars will downshift for you when you slow down because if it doesn’t, your car would stall.
Can someone tell me what are the recommended rpms to upshift and recommend rpms to downshift
Like
1 up shirt at 2500 rpm etc
What are the right ways I wanna start using the paddle shifter in my car but I don’t wanna mess up
Hey 🙂 check this video I made out - czcams.com/video/wmeu2eZctm0/video.html
It will explain that basically there is no correct rpms to upshift and downshift at, there are wrong rpms to upshift and downshift at. Depanding on the situation and how you want to accelerate the rpms for upshifting and downshift will be different so there is no perfect rpm to upshift or downshift at. 🙂
I found this very helpful, but I still have one question. He mentioned that when you are upshifting you shouldn't let off the throttle. Is it the same when downshifting? As in, should I keep my foot on the accelerator even when I'm downshifting, or should I take my foot off?
Hi I know this is late but just wondering if u ever figured this out? And also I am just wondering how can I do smoother shift I have sequential shifting which is the same as paddle shifters but using the gear box instead and pushing it up for a higher gear and down for lower. Because I know he said don’t let off the throttle when u up shift but when I let go for a second then upshift it feels a lot smoother for some reason but I don’t know. Essentially I just don’t want to fuck up the transmission. But ik u only started a few months ago but saw u had the same question as me so I replied. Sorry for the long response
So if i’m right, if he would’ve been going faster like trying to do a pull his rpm’s would be increasing alot faster?
Yes the rpms are liturarly how fast the parts of your engine are spinning, so the faster you are going in a specific gear the faster your rpms are increasing, until you run out of engine speed (ie the rpms are maxed out, ie nearing red line) and it's time to upshift to get into a higher gear which will drop your rpms a bit and again your rpms start climbing and will be climbing as quickly as you are applying the throttle 🙂
Full throttle = fastest rpm increase
When you downshift, can you “rev match” to make a smoother transition? In my G35 it pulls back a little when I downshift in the 2k range
You do not need to rev match at all in a automatic, since the car does it for you. In fact you might confuse the computer in the car if you will try to rev match, it is not used to that and is not expecting that so keep the foot steady when changing gears.
@@thekingofmuscle7021 Thanks man, I appreciate it
Would it be okay to not press on the gas pedal when downshifting? And vice versa
Yes when downshifting, but when you are upshifting it is better to apply consistent amount of gas. Since car's logic is he is not accelerating why the hell he is trying to upshift?
Does only the newer models down shift for you when slowing down? I have a 2013 charger rt
I am not sure but if it isn't a manual it should. Try coming to a complete stop from like a third of a second gear and then you can see on your dash if it did shifted to a first gear or not. That is how you will be able to tell (: nothing bad would happen if you do not downshift and u are at a complete stop in a 3rd gear for example. So this is totally safe to do. Just before accelerating back up downshift to first gear just so you aren't making the engine work too hard trying to push the car forward in a high gear (:
The King of Muscle thank you. This helped
Do you keep your foot on the gas when down shifting?
You just need to keep your gas input constant when changing gears so if you are downshifting and you have your foot on the gas then keep it there, if you let go of the gas and want to downshift then let it down shift and then put foot on gas if needed etc 🙂 hope this helps!
So if I’m trying to haul and get to 0-60 the fastest and loudest way possible, what do u recommend with paddles?
Smash the gas paddle and let the revs go all the way up to red line before upshifting. That's how you usually would achieve the fastest acceleration. Be careful, try not to go into the red zone (ie past the red line). That's pretty much it 🙂
The King of Muscle so should I start at 2nd gear and upshift everytime it’s bouta pass red? (I’ve got an 8 gear)
Start at the first gear it will give you the most power to start with and depanding on how powerful your car is and how slippery ur tires and road are modulate your starting point (ie if you are at dead stop and slam the gas as hard as possible and it just spins rear tires and you do a burn out then try to roll on to the gas paddle instead of smashing it) you are basically looking for the best sweet spot. If your car is waaay too powerful (like a hellcat for example) then the best way to lunch it even on a nice road could be from the second gear. But for most cars it would be first gear.
The King of Muscle I’ve got an r/t plus pushing 400 horse power so 1st gear?
Yeah try it out if you'll get wheel spin then try rolling into the gas paddle and try from second gear and see what's the fastest 🙂
is it damaging the car if you only upshift on the high way and let it shift itself instead of downshifting
It is not damaging to let the car downshift by itself at all when you are slowing down. Since the rpms would be really low for it to do so and that is totally normal. That is usually when you should be downshifting if u want to save on gas and etc. The higher rpms the more stress on the engine there is. Just like a human the faster u running the faster u get tired. So when the car is in low rpms it is totally fine (:
Ngl I've been upshifting with my foot off the pedal because it sounds like a manual, yikes
sounds like the dad off despicable Me
Is it dangerous to downshift to first gear while moving using paddle shifters?
No, not at all if your speed is very low 🙂
So I’m suppose to keep the gas in at a consistent pressure when down shifting?
Yes, basically try not to change the gas input while the car is upshifting or downshifting, BUT with downshifting You do not have to keep the gas in at all if you do not want to. In fact most of the downshifting that ur car does by itself is when you let go off the gas peddal and are slowly breaking going towards the red light (ie stopping) if u were in gear 5 and started to break to a complete stop, the car throughout this process will switch all the way to gear one automatically by the time u come to a complete stop (or right after you come to a complete stop)
The King of Muscle oh wow, thanks!
So you downshift whenever RPMs are high to get them lower. And you upshift when rpms are too low?
Reverse it
Think of it as opposites. Upshift gear goes up but RPM goes down. Downshift gear goes down but RPM goes up.
Why is is better to downshift when overtaking and not slam the gas to 6k rpm and then upshift? Is the 2nd method only used when accelerating from a stop? Thanks.
Well let's say you are cruising normally on a highway at 100kph, 2,000rpms and in a 6th gear. So your engine is not working too hard you don't what to be cruising at high rpms so when you got up to 100kpm u upshifted until ur rpms very low. That also saves fuel since engine isn't rotating as fast / isn't working as hard. And you cruising relaxingly. Now you want to overtake someone. If you slam the gas paddle when ur rpms are low ur car will start slowly to accelerate. Think of it as the higher rpms are the more alert and quick to respond ur car is. The lower they are the slower and lazier to respond ur car is. So you slam the gas and the rpms are slowing strating to climb, ur car is "waking up from the lazy walk" lol it's also what is called "Engine Lagging" ie slamming the gas paddle and trying to make engine work as hard as it can at lower rpms. So now look at this scenario: you want to overtake a car. You downshift one or two gears now you are in gear 4 and rpms are high at like 5,000 but still same speed at 100kph. Think of it as a slam on the face when ur friend is being sleepy lol now he is more alert and is ready to get up and run xD so you downshift to 4th for example and now you press the gas paddle your car will accelerate much faster and will overtake the car quicker and now you can move in his lane for example and upshift back to where you were lol as if u woke ur friend up with a slap said "Run Police" he ran for a block and then slowed down and went back to his normal walking speed lol that's it is. And if you need to upshift while overtaking someone that is fine as well you can ring it out all the way to the red line if needed and then get back to cruising speed and cruising rpms to save fuel and not make ur engine work super hard 🙂 does this help?)
@@thekingofmuscle7021 Omg fully understood thanks!!!
so basically up shifting between 2500-3000 RPM and then down shifting 1500-1000 RPM ?
and also letting it down shift by itself bad for the engine or cvt?
Quick question. When we are slowing down and down shift. Do I need to keep foot still and can the car down shift automatically ? My car is Dodge Charger 2019 SXT
Yeah you don't need to do anything the car will downshift for you when it gets to low rpms. You can however downshift before it does to a) slowdown quicker, b) if you feel like you will need to accelerate quickly before coming to a complete stop. Just try to keep your accelerator input steady throughout the shifting if you are doing it manually. IE if u are pressing the gas paddle while downshifting don't change the amount u are applying as you are downshifting, if you aren't pressing gas at all then don't suddenly try to give it gas in exact moment as you are downshifting, etc keep the gas input steady while downshifting no matter what that input is. 🙂
@@thekingofmuscle7021 So I can hold the break to slow down and using clutch to shift down at the same time, right ?
@@huyhuynh803 you are talking about a clutch? You have 3 paddles? If you do then this video is not for you since this is for manual mode in the automatic cars, not for manual cars. Sorry about the confusion.
