- A Polish businessman risked his life to film everyday life in the Warsaw Ghetto. These harrowing 8 mm movies were stored for decades in archives, and are shown publicly for the first time in this documentary. The original title of the film is "Warsaw: A City Divided", directed by Eric Bednarski.
The Warsaw Ghetto was located in the heart of the Polish capital. In November 1940, one year after Germany invaded Poland, the occupation authorities completed work on a three-meter-high wall that surrounded the ghetto. The Jewish residents were sealed off from the outside world. The ghetto was intended to serve as a concentration camp for Jews from all over Europe. They would later be deported to the extermination camp at Treblinka.
As many as 500,000 people were rounded up and herded into the ghetto. The films shown in this documentary portray the daily lives of those who lived there. Food and clean water were in short supply. The Germans demolished the ghetto in May 1943, and sent the residents to concentration- or extermination camps. Today, a series of memorial plaques marks the district's boundaries. In this documentary, witnesses describe what life was like in Warsaw before the German invasion, and provide graphic accounts of life in the ghetto.

The production of this documentary is outstanding. The revisiting of the empty cable car throughout the film is a powerful symbol of death, loss, and remembrance.

A sad, and excellent film. I was in Warsaw in 1973 and saw the old city being rebuilt, and noticed the contrast between the beautiful, old Polish architecture and the stark, concrete blocks of the Stalinist buildings. It was the saddest city I have ever visited. In the centre there were shrines on almost every corner where the Nazis had massacred people, Poles, Jews or whoever was in their way. Let us not forget.
I am a young Varsovian, and I hope that everyone gets to see the city at some point. Today’s Warsaw is not like Their Warsaw anymore, but it is beautiful in its decay, modernity, but first and foremost, history. We shall never forget what happened, never again!!

From the perspective of the physical Warsaw (versus the people, its history and soul), from this documentary I see a city bathed in trees and soviet structures. Overtime, perhaps these structures will be imploded and new ones built. Having said that, I bet the apartments in those soviet buildings are larger than apartments and condos in today's hastily built glass towers.
It would be good to see how Warsaw looked before the war. It was a beautiful city. Then see it now 2021. It has changed so fast even in the years since this documentary. I was there in 1991..There was nothing. No skyline except the Russian Culture building.
I'm Polish, Warsaw was very beautiful, but for now this city is a garbage. But current polish government want to rebuild more old buildings, so lets wait and See how will the Warsaw looks like.

I've been to Warsaw couple of times, it is a vibrant, modern city full of happy and amazing people. It is unbelieveable how much history, tears and blood that city saw. Warsaw is like Fenix, the will of people will always keep it alive. Greeting from Australia and all the best, Poland please become a local superpower and keep progressing towards the strenght.

We use to be very strong country and one of the biggest in Europe. We could fight with other superpowers at the same time and usually win if not we still made it to exist.
We had to fought with Ottoman Empire, Holy Roman Empire of German House, Teoutonic Order, Russians (we had to occupie Moscov for 2 years) Sweden, Tatars(Mongols) Czech Kingdom and others.

Old Warsaw Ghetto is now mostly Muranów district of Warsaw, i lived there recently (close to Pawiak prison) and fact worth mentioning is that most of those reconstructed buildings were made using rubble of old ones. And the remains of people murdered are still there. It was the intention of post war architect of the district to rebuild this place this way, so there was no actual professional exhumantions. "Sea of rubble" was 3 meters high so they didnt dig into the basements and just builded over it (thats why most of the buildings stands on little hills). If you do any groundwork around the district you can still find human bones, old building parts etc. Some of which are right under the sidewalks (old building rubble) and visible as the sidewalk slowly collapses over time. Living in this part of Warsaw was really special, hard to explain, it was just different than anywhere else. To all souls lost in this tragedy - rest in peace. Never again war
It's an appalling atrocity how you have built parts of buildings and sidewalks built from many old Jewish graves with inscriptions still clearly visible.Youf people have no regrets and no respect obviously. A shame and disgrace.And on top of that your government has tried to deny the Holocaust.Well unfortunately for you Jews have long memories and we will make sure the world remembers.

The kibbutz Lochamei hagetaot in Northern Israel was founded by survivors of the uprising of the Warsaw ghetto, notabli Icchak Cukierman
Professor Felton have great productions and so much bizarre and normally, historically unknown content.

I am first generation German, I'm absolutely ashamed to what happened to the people of Poland, the ghetto. Poor Poland suffered so bad between the Germans and the Russians. Sad

My grandfather was polish and came to the uk at the start of the war. He was part of the polish Air Force. He was always an angry man and would never ever discuss the war. If something came on the tv about the war or concentration camps, he was roar in anger to switch it off. Sadly we will never know what he saw or lived through.
He always loved his home country and only got to return once, and that was when he retired. He seemed calm and happier when he came back, for a time but, at least he got to see his family one more time. Over all the years they kept in touch by letter every single month and he always sent money, right up until he had a massive stroke and couldn’t anymore. It’s disgusting what happened to the people of Poland and especially Jewish communities all over Europe too. May they all rest in peace.

When I was a kid,in the 70s,my Polish grandma would collect our old clothes and send them over.(from US) Her family was still there & letters were sent back n forth..One time she showed us a picture.There was a boy my age (8ish) wearing my old baby blue,fake fur cuffed parka..With a smile like he hit the lottery..That's when I got the poverty/communism talk..The coat was warm,that's all that mattered.Spun my head..When I was older she told me that she would put brand new Levi's in the boxes that they could trade for $$$..

I know there was a Polish airforce based here in the UK. And they fought hard. The British Government treated them appallingly after the war, completely dismissive of all their vital help. This country wouldn’t have won the war without the Polish. Perhaps that’s why your grandfather was so angry. A very belated thank you from myself and my family ❤️❤️
@@karenjewell6543 Both of my father's parents came from Poland, but my Grandma died in 1963, I was about 7 years old. My Grandfather never spoke of anyone in Poland, I don't think he was able to contact any surviving family. I know he came from Tarnow, and I found on-line records of his 1880 baptism. I intend to travel there after I retire.
My grandmother had to sell or exchange her breast milk to the orphans at the hospitals to feed her children. Something I will never forget. 😪

Thank you for this documentary. I have been living in Warsaw for the last 8 years and I think it is the best city in the world. It was rebuilt from the ashes and now it is again a 2-million-people metropolis. It is my home. There is no comparison to the night view of the city skyline rising upon Vistula riverbanks in the evening. This city has the ability to survive and thrive no matter what. Documentaries like this one are important, especially today, in times of hate, discrimination, lies and misinformation - we must NEVER repeat the mistakes of the past. NIGDY WIĘCEJ WOJNY - KEIN KRIEG MEHR - NO MORE WAR.

@@MrPaultopp No, Polish people themselves returned to live in ruins and rebuilt the city with their own hands, women and men alike, including many renowned pre-war Modernist architects like Bohdan Pniewski or Stefan Karpiński. Forgeigners from USSR were partially involved only in the construction of the Palace of Culture and Science in the centre of Warsaw.
What a wonderful film. Thank to all who were involved in the film's production. It's been years since I've been in Warsaw but wish to return and follow the ghetto history.
As a native German I lived abroad and met Holocaust survivors. Having been made aware of German crimes at an excellent school I felt responsible for these crimes and grew up with an awareness for tolerance and decency. When I watched this film, I once again realised the atrocity of it all and broke out in tears, especially, when I saw that young boy being beaten by the policeman. This film is made to commemorate Warsaw what it used to be, and the murdered Jewish community and their suffering.
Remember, the atrocities will never be your fault. They are the fault of those who actually never took responsibility for their own actions, ie Hitler , Goebbels, Himmler, etc.. their failures and the loss of WW1, the financial climate after that war and the Depression was the fault of the Jews. They made excuses as do people here in the USA do.
The slavery issues of the Civil War are being blamed on people of this day and she. Like your parents, our families could barely get along during the 1800s. No one had the time to pay attention nor could they afford to.

I learned a lot of information from the documentary that I had not known previously. It's good that there are documentaries like this to provide more details about such an important part of history that should never be forgotten.
This was a very moving documentary. You could almost feel the fear and pain of some the people in the ghetto
Thank you DW for another outstanding look into the history of WWII and what took place across Europe. The reports issued by DW are always very insightful, and are not a mish-mash of previous information reported by numerous other sources. It is a modern look into the events of the past and helps us remember. If we remember, we do not repeat the horrible mistakes of the past.

Whereas many other countries refuse to talk about the more unsavory aspects of their history, Germany and their broadcasters produce some great productions to commemorate this very dark event and in this case DW seems to have gone to place, fully knowing there is little left, to speak to people who lived during that era.

The Polish people have been treated miserably throughout history, yet they opened their arms and their hearts to millions of Ukrainians. The polish people are so happy and friendly, yet so self sufficient, and clever. I find their attitude quite remarkable.

I 100% agree. I was in Kraków in March 2022. Ukraine's most vulnerable needed help, and the Poles answered.
My grandparents lived through this in Warsaw...and still despised the Soviets more. My grandpa was 19 and my grandma 21 when the war started. We aren’t Jewish but they were a part of the resistance army during the uprising. Man they had some stories...I miss them...

Siedzieli w piwnicy i żywili się czekoladą Wedla, bo taką zapłatę od firmy Wedel dostał jej wujek za naprawę samochodu. Chyba w poblizu był sierociniec Korczaka, bo ona się z takimi później dziećmi kontaktowała. Tez poznałam trochę historii, niestety babcia zmarła.

I've lived in Poland for a while and every single person who I met hated more the Soviets than the Nazis, which was a surprise for me at that time. They say that more than 40 years of Soviet humiliation was much worse than what the Nazis did.
When I was younger I hated so much history I always thought about the past is the past and we should move forward. Now that I'm older and a little bit wiser, I love documentaries and history because now I know that thanks to the past history im here. And im always so grateful for the past and for learning about it

My great grandfather's brother Mendel Oppenheim (72 years old at the time) built a bunker as a preparation to the Ghetto uprising, where he was hiding with his sister Anna Oppenheim (aged 58), his daughters Judith Oppenheim (aged 33) and Malka Hoffman (aged 45) and her family - husband Gershon and two daughters Hava (aged 20) and Ida (aged 25) , also Mendel's son Fred Oppenheim (aged 43) with his wife Rachel (aged 38) with two children a boy and a girl aged 7 and 9. The bunker was discovered by the Germans in the first few days of the uprising, all of the family was dragged out, put against a wall and shot. I have an eye witness report. For many people this is not history, but a leaving pain. May their souls rest in peace, their blood revenged!!!!
I am so sorry. My maternal grandmother escaped, but my uncle Marek, my aunt Frania and my grandparents Gitel and Yankel were murdered there.

When you are young you have nothing but the future; but when you are old you have nothing but the past. When taught correctly, history is a combination of both. That is why I am so grateful for these documentaries because it is never too late to recognize evil and correct its wrongs.

In the past year, I read slot of holocaust and saw testimonials, documentaries, real life stories and it just overwhelms me to a point where I feel so sorrowful for the men,women and children who died for no reason! This is for me the most powerful documentary I have seen to date on the Warsaw ghetto. Your resarchers have done an incredible job of finding original film. The little boys smuggling goods into the ghetto and then been beaten. They ran away as if they were not 41:44 affected. This video with the empty tram running through the street made a visceral impact on me as well as much of the video. 😢 Such a horrific tragedy. Truly grateful for your work as ever, although painful to watch. My ❤goes out to the survivors and the Polish people.
38:04 brought me to tears... a precious little boy trusting his daddy.... who knows what horrors may have come to them. May God never it happen to my precious little boy. God help us.

It’s so painful to know the horrors of what was done to these innocent people. The horror of living in that time, is for me just unimaginable, it’s terrifying to watch. Very moving, many thanks for posting. The empty tram moving across Warsaw at night is a haunting vision, but very fitting. Can't understand why there are any 'dislikes' for this excellent film.
Every country suffered under Nazi occupation, but the Germans & Russians had particular animosity for Poland. It is heart-breaking & tragic the horrors that unfolded in a wonderfully vibrant country.
Yet the Polish people never gave up! How ever dark the hour was, pick up ANY book of the Second World War and you'll understand how ferocious, tenacious and relentless were the Polish forces fighting for the Allies. From the Battle of Britain to Montecassino in Italy to the Falaise Gap in France, never underestimate the Poles!
Neither Fascism nor Communism ever stood a chance with Poland!
Starting a war over it was stupid but there is some reason why poland was disliked by its 2 neighbours. Nevertheless diplomacy should have been enough but the idiot Hitler was out of his mind.
Over 500000 Soviet soldiers gave their lives to drive nazi out of Poland in the winter of 1945! It is a historical fact.
@NVP no one denies the sacrifice the Soviets made to defeat Hitler but it is correct to say that prior to the Nazi invading the Soviet Union the non aggression pact.between Hitler and Stalin saw Poland carved up between them.

I feel horribly uneducated about this time in world history, so I’m learning through watching these documentaries. Its made me realize how diligent we must be to make sure this never happens again. The horrors that people suffered are incredibly sad, the resilience of survivors is absolutely astounding. I think everyone needs to watch these shows lest we forget history. This must never happen again.
My Father in law fought in WW2 and he told me he learned more about history and the war on THE HISTORY CHANNEL than he ever knew. Apparently it was on a NEED TO KNOW basis and the US Government felt like they just didn't need to know.

This is one of the best documentaries I've watched on the Warsaw Ghetto. It places the ghetto in perspective to the rest of Warsaw allowing the viewer to see the scale and geography of the city districts and the ghetto. The % of Jewish people who comprised the population of the city is also emphasised. This information is missing from every other documentary on this subject. I have a far greater understanding of the subject as a result of watching this very moving and impactful film. Thank you

Agreed. This really opened my eyes to other things as well. I got a very clear sense of what the Warsaw Ghetto actually was, how it became what it was, and how it was maintained and then destroyed. I never heard or considered what the logistics of such an endeavor would involve … never considered that it involved everyone who wasn’t German. I was not aware of the plan to “erase” Warsaw and all non-German people from Poland, In fact to erase Poland itself. No doubt that was the plan all across Europe. No more Europe! Only Germany?
The enormity of it … I come to the conclusion that the word Holocaust has not really been seen fully … at least in my education (born USA 1948), we were never given the depth of knowledge to really even begin to grasp the multi-dimensionality or depth of human depravity that was visited upon these people. @@maryhjort7318 There is still so much to learn about this horrific period in world history- tragically there are similar events occurring in our world today that news media "conveniently" ignore. I must agree that when ever I meet American's I'm amazed at just how little they seem to know about world history (and geography). Most that they do know seems to be a simplified version and seen through American "patriotic" propaganda such as "America won the Second World War- with zero knowledge of the massive contribution and sacrifice of over 20 million Russian troops and civilians- this was deliberately overlooked during the Cold War and of course has persisted.
AGREED! Having an A in college level drafting, and having drafting in my blood, I was attracted to this video more than any on the subject of Floorplan and city layouts.
To describe the pain, horrors and atrocities would be an underestimation. I hope we all learn a lesson about the effect of dehumanization, which is the cause of hate and destruction. In essence, we are truly one; all of us, regardless of race, ideology, sex, nationality or religion, it's called the human race. Let us focus on the 99 % we have in common. The world is so ready for healing, love and unity.

Being Jewish living in America, I look at the pictures, read the books , watch the films and to be honest I have nearly an impossible time trying to understand what happened but also trying to understand what it was like to live under the circumstances that existed during that time., and I just can't do it. My parents survived. There was always Jew hatred in Europe it was seething. Various institutions accepted hitler. The pope was the first to recognize hitler giving his acceptance. They knew Jews were not strong. They didn’t have a country they could go to. America had very strict quotas against Jews. Jews were stranded in a hell hole. The Red Cross was only there for the Jews after the war to search for relatives. They even refused to recognize the Magen David atom- Israel Red Cross but, they. Accepted the Muslim crescent. Same here. I know so much about that time and all that happened but i simply cannot understand it on a very profound level. sometimes I’m trying to imagine the horrible things when standing in a place where some of the events took place but it’s hardly possible.
we have step stones in many places, golden stones in the ground with the names of people on them who fell victim to the nazi regime including some additional information.
I love this idea because it honors the dead in a very personal, respectful way and integrates their memory into our everyday life.

A really good historical documentary. I know a lot about the Warsaw Ghetto but obviously not enough. I'm really touched by the strength all of the Polish people of all religions showed under Nazi occupation and then under the Soviet Union's oppression. They both wanted to annihilate Poland but both failed.
Lets never forget and always watch out that nothing in this way can ever happen again.

I like it that German makers of this documentary had enough civility to call the perpetrators of this horrible crime by their real name, i.e., ‘Germans’, instead of cryptic ‘Nazis’. They didn’t have enough civility, though, to go into the mass killing that their forefathers perpetrated. It was mentioned but without much emphasis. The geographic layout of the Warsaw Ghetto was given much more attention, as if it really mattered.

Every time I think things are hard in my life whether it was in basic training in the military or whatever I got through it by imagining the people that survived this if they can survive the ones that did I can survive anything that's ever been in front of me God bless all those that suffered I can't even fathom such horrific inhumanities!

There is a book "Irene's Children" by author Tilar Mazzio. Its about heroic young woman - Irena Sandler(ova) who saved about 2500 from Warsaw ghetto, by risking her life.
In 1982 I took a ged class with a survivor of this. Her name was Sophie. She watched uprising with us kids and cried and told stories about the war in 39,43,and 45. She came to America in 1950. It's beyond, my comprehension the unchecked hate. I don't get it. I probably never will

I remember reading a book called Escape from Warsaw as a child. I found it exciting, but I had no idea or grasp of the true horrors that occurred.

I think what is so harrowing watching this film is knowing that those living, breathing people who had families and dearly loved ones would shortly cease to exist - and in a terrifying and horrific way. Even the poor shreds of humanity that survived against the odds would have memories that world surely haunt them all their lives. That dear little boy who was being beaten so harshly for nothing except trying to survive or just provide for his family, did he survive I wonder or just one of the million blessed little ones that did not. Is he just a photo or a name on the ceiling of Yad Vashem? I guess someone remembers him. So tragic a film. That k you so much to the man who had the courage to take it and to preserve it. I watched this to see if similarities between Warsaw and Gaza existed. It’s remarkable of the similar circumstances. Smuggling of goods, limiting goods going in, fences and walls, worrying they will be killed by the military, starvation, it’s all sadly similar.
The biggest difference is that Gaza has been under occupation for 75 years. If the Warsaw ghetto had been under occupation for 75 years, they undoubtedly would’ve created their own version of Hamas and deemed terrorists by their oppressor. Which side would you have been on?
Media and governments do an outstanding job of propagandizing and demonizing the “other”. They did it in the 1940s and they do it still. Let’s not lose our humanity! Free Palestine and let’s not repeat the past.
