Correct about the unibody, but that's not much of a factor in this condition. A truck frame and solid axel wouldn't help here. (He's sitting flat.) The tires just suck for this. The 2.0 250hp motor is more than enough for some nice all-terrains that would easily overcome this situation. It's no f-150 4x4 that will take you through all sorts of off-road terrain and conditions, but I think it's great for my job that requires carrying moderately sized tool kits and parts over the span of 3K to 5K miles a month. Calling it a turd or comparing it to a Focus is a little harsh. It's more of a crossover masquerading as a truck, which isn't bad with some nice all-terrain tires. Not amazing like a true truck, but certainly no turd. I like to say "it's more car than truck, but it's all the truck I need." Yeah, I have one, so I'm partial, but its capabilities and utility definitely exceed its price point. I picked up a babied 1993 Alfa Romeo Spyder in very good condition with the $17k I saved. The whole "it's not a real truck" thing almost cost me more, and it's true, it's not a real truck, but it's the perfect work vehicle for people like me. It's not a turd, but I understand the sentiment when compared with a real truck. It's the "Focus" thing that triggered me. Lol.
But it is in this scenario 🤷. Folks seem to think that a slippery mode or snow mode is to get you out or through snow. All those modes do is prevent slipping, by managing power from the tires that slip to the tires that grip. When you are in a situation where all 4 tires are not getting traction, the traction control that the snow modes provide are udderly useless.
that's why I got the Ford Ranger! push button locking diff with a spin dial for 4x4. I just took it offroading in snow, and the truck was very capable.

6" snow no problem for my 1995 2.3 L rear wheel drive 5 speed manual Ford Ranger transmission snow chains in bag in back never used. 6,000 feet in Nevada. Also a long handle square point shovel. Oh and there's also a 5,000 lb winch in the front end just in case I need it. Are you in 4-wheel drive high gear or 4-wheel drive low. And I bet you have maximum tire pressure, easy deflated tires down about 15 psi if you're trying to run in snow. If you have your tires inflated to maximum if the temperature is 100° for every 2 ° in temperature change your tire pressure changes by 1PSI.
Owned mine for three years and had no problems. Went through mud and snow. Played in snow with it. I have much better of road tires but still the maverick is great.

Ill go on record defending this thing because its for a very specific market that isnt being touched lately. Its for the every day, low to middle income families that need a truck for every now and then projects or tasks, that dont want to spend an arm and a leg for something that gets 15 mpg and has 30k worth of bells and whistles inside. I have an F150, I love my F150, I also think that not every truck has to be capable of riding on 37 fucking inch wheels with a 6 inch lift kit. Plus lets be honest, how many "durable, offroading capable" full size trucks are actually being used to tow or haul anything? Id confidently say that some of the mavericks on the road are being used as work trucks more than some of the full sized ones you'd see.
I live in Canada and actually put snow tires on a vehicle and now how to drive in snow ... I've driven mine in snow storms where it dumped 18" of snow in 10 hours ... Never had a problem... Don't be an idiot and it works 👍

To be fair, it has a higher payload than a lot of full size trucks like certain Ram 1500 or Tundra trims. We love ours, dollar for dollar, it's the best truck out there. It can't tow 15,000 lbs, but full size trucks will never get 45 mpg, so it's a trade off. Keeping it forever pretty much XD.

Sport mode would lose traction on dry pavement. You want slippery or eco mode with very light throttle and also not drive into snow banks.

Your traction is only as good as your tires. My Maverick came with Wildpeak A/Ts. I cut through a foot of snow like it's nothing.
