Misty, thank you for your video. It's great to hear the voice of another runner with a pacemaker. I've run long distance for 49 years. I retired from racing marathons and ultras in the early 2000s. I continued running including streak years such as I am having this year. In November 2019, I had a pacer implanted. In addition it was followed up with cardioversion and last year, a series of ablations. My last visit to the tech was to correct the pacemaker for running. It seems to be ok... I do experience that horrific depleted feeling post run... Just this week two of my doctors, one an extensivist and the other my cardiac surgeon gave the go ahead to train for a 100 mile race. Probably my orthopedic aches and pains will be more of a problem then my heart but I am excited. Granted this is one of those grandpa races with more...umm.. mature runners with a 40 hour cutoff. So even if I take it easy, nap, eat like a pig, drink and nap some more I can probably complete the 100 miles under 40 hours. Anyway, I'm glad I watched your video. I do have a question for you and any readers on this thread, do you run with a running vest? I haven't been able since the strap of the ones I do have irritate the incision area. Do you or anyone else have a work around?
Thanks. I hope to see more of your videos.

I do use a running vest. I have one from osprey. It does take some trial and error to find one that isn’t annoying, but I think getting one that fit well was key. I made sure it was not too tight but also not too loose. I actually find certain sports bras to be more annoying than my running vest.

Thank you! I know it might not be the same for everyone but this is my experience.

I'm 52, I got my pacemaker in April, and I started jogging this week. I just finished 1/2 mile run. I barely made it, but it's a start. It's kind of scary. Thank you for your encouragement. I'm a new subscriber. I'm 220 pounds, 5"10 so I think I have to take it slow while I get started.

I wish I had mentioned the initial anxiety when I first started running again. I think I had forgotten how big of a struggle that was.

Good video. I started intensely training for a long distance hike. One thing I found is that my pacemaker took a couple of minutes to "catch up" to my exertion. It took some bitching at the doctor. But, they adjusted it to "athlete" and it seems better.

Good for you. Over time, you get really good at advocating for yourself. I’ve gone in for a pacemaker adjustment and literally told the technician that what they did didn’t feel right and asked them to switch it back.

Hi Misty, great video! I have been looking for one on running w a pacemaker. I got a duel lead pacemaker 5 weeks ago. My doctor said no running for 4-6 weeks. I heard 4 weeks, my wife heard 6 weeks. Guess who I listened too? Haha
I have run 4 full marathons and 20 1/2s over the past say 15-20 years. Before my pacemaker I was averaging about 25-30 miles a week.
I am 62 years old and in pretty good shape, except for my heart, of course.
My plan is to start running next week. I have a 1/2 marathon planned in October and November and February.
My pacemaker is set at 70 and 150. How am I going to feel on my first run? And after a month or so, will I need and adjustment on my pacemaker.
    Thanks for this “runners video”!!!

I’m learning so much from the comments on this video. My pacemaker paces if my heart rate falls below 50, but I don’t have a top end. I imagine that is very challenging for a runner. Sounds like you are already a very experienced runner. I wasn’t. I had run track in high school, was in the military, and raced a few 5 and 10ks. I was very out of shape when I started back into running with my pacemaker; I bet you will have an easier time than I had. Remember to be safe and kind to yourself! You’ll get there!

I also have a pacemaker and have had it since 2019, my device won't let my heart rate get above 180 bpm, no matter what I'm doing. Do you have any advice for going about this? My cardiologist says its ok and I can still run but talk about hitting a wall while sprinting.......
    Thanks!

I wish I had an answer. Sounds like our situations are very different. Runners with pacemakers certainly have more to overcome when trying to get faster! You’ll find a way through it. Don’t give up!

Hey Tara, my duel pacemaker paces all the time. My low is set at 70 and max is 150 bpm. I haven’t started running yet since I only have had the pacemaker for 5 weeks. I am nervous on how mine reacts when I try to get back to running 25 miles/ week.

Hi y’all. If you think your pacemaker settings are keeping you from running well, I would definitely mention that to your doctor and during your pacemaker checks. Sometimes I feel like we have to be our biggest advocates. You know when something doesn’t feel right.
