    Hi! Nice Review....let me ask you,,,after you buy the 18-105mm, do you stil use the 18-55mm kit lens? I thinking about getting the 18-105mm and sell my kit lens, because i think there will be no use anymore....and the glass is better than the kit lens? Did you fell any diference in the photos? Comparing the Sigma x Nikkor 18-105, much diference in the shots quality? Sorry for all the questions and tks in advance!

    sell your 3 zooms because they all cover the same range, pick up a sigma 17-55 2.8 o.s. and then grab a nikon 55-200. fewer lenses. same focal range. and the 17-55 is sharper and constant aperture.

  • @RobertXPhotography
    @RobertXPhotography Před 10 lety +12

    The lenses you should get to start off are as follows:
    35mm
    50mm
    85mm
    The 85mm is perfect for portraiture, but on a crop sensor camera the 50mm turns to an 85 (just about) so I guess you can use that.
    Forget about getting your "zoom" lenses first. Get good glass first and learn how to frame your photos first.

    Great video. Common misconception with lenses as a beginner or amateur is that filters always help. This is not the case. The filters that I see in this video don't even look like they are multicoated, and if you're using a cheap lens with a cheap filter on top it could actually detract from the quality of your photos. A much better way to protect your lens without sacrificing image quality is something you already have - lens hoods. And unless you can't spare the space in your gear bag, I would highly recommend keeping the hoods on at ALL times. Even at night. It won't take away from your image, and it will always help to protect against bumps and other accidents as well as doing its primary job of getting rid of unwanted light flares and other effects in your shots.

    TY for the review and the photos that showed what an 35mm lens can do. I'm coming back into photography from the film world. At that time I used a moderately fast film, an F/22, and 50mm for wide angle and deep focus. I know what to do with this camera that way. The links helped. Many thanks.

  • @arabindasen3

    I own Nikon D3100. My gear is same as yours. The only exception is I did not acquire Nikon 18-110, Instead I bought one Tamron 17-50 F2.8. I think it is a worthy upgrade from my kit lens although much weightier.. Pictures shot by me by this lens are sharp across focal lengths with good colour depth/saturation, and the added advantage is constant 2.8 aperture which is great for night shots. It has no VR, but in daylight shooting conditions, you can easily avoid blurriness as the shutter speed is above 1/30 which I can manage.The Sigma 18-200, the same as your own, is a good walk around all purpose lens, although it best performs in mid range apertures, from F/8 to F/11. Otherwise pictures would be unacceptably soft. Of course for persons with deeper pockets should go for Nikon 18-300, if they do not like frequent change of lens which is really difficult in certain situations. Nikon prime lens that, i.e., 35 mm 1.8G is a must have one as it is really a fast lens with exceptionally good photographic results combining advantage of light weight. However Nikon would have done better to add VR feature to it which definitely would help its wide aperture advantage in low light shootings.

    I have a D5300 - I still have the 18-70mm I go with my D70s about 12 years ago. It's a decent piece of glass. I picked up a 55-200 DX zoom used for cheap It's the older VR, not the newer VRII - not the greatest, autofocus is a bit slow, but does it the job, most of the time. I also have the 35 f1.8G - decent lens, does available light well. The last lens I got was a 10-20mm AF-P zoom. Everything is BUDGET that I bought new on sale or used. I'm thinking about getting the 70-300mm AFS FX zoom to replace the 55-200. There were 4 used listed locally the last time I checked. I am on a fixed retirement income and what I have just fits what I can afford. The 18-70mm is also fits my calibrated Infrared converted D80 that I picked used about 6 years ago.

However we now have two girls, one currently in ballet. She would like to upgrade our camera for DIY home pictures/portraits. I personally love taking pics when i go to the mountains and sporting events. I bought a 5200 with the nikon 15-55 and 55-200 lens, but i'm seeing a ton of other options and after seeing your video i'm wondering if i should consider a different option for my lens. We aren't pro shooters and never will be, but we do like photos. Any thoughts?

      @dial2fast  Před 10 lety +1

      I think you should first get use to what you have. Then you will quickly realize the limits of what your current lens can and cannot do (depending on the type of pictures you take). After this, you will know what type of lens you need. Ex: is weight important to you, or if you need the wide angle which your 55-200 can't cover, etc. I still love my 18-105mm as far as versatility. If I need the extra reach, then grab the lens that goes to 200 or 300mm

    Hi
    I am thinking of buying d5200 with sigma 18-250 lenses with out kit lense. Is it a good choice? Or stick with 2 kit lenses?
    Thanks in advance

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  Před 10 lety

      The 18-250 is versatile but it's a bulky and heavy lens. Once you get into photography, you will end up investing in different lenses for different shoots.

  • @Jhvxgir
    @Jhvxgir Před 10 lety

    I think with Sigma 17-50 2.8f EX OS HSM and Tamron 70-300 VC is enough to start, both are very good lens, avoid Sigma 18-200. And if you need a wide angle pick Tokina 12-24 DX II. I am talking of a quality/price equipment. If you don't mind budget pick at least a Nikon 17-55 2.8f

    Sir I like your review and I'm considering 5200 as my first dslr, what lens wold you recommend for architectural building shots, good both for exterior and interior.

    • @michaeltbui
      @michaeltbui Před 9 lety +1

      Depending on how far you are away from the Architecture, you might want to get anything from a 28mm ( with a very wide view ) to even a 70mm, if you want an all around lens, I would recommend a Sigma or Even a Tamron, 24-70 f/2.8 which is 'fast' so it lets it quite alot of light compared to your 'kit' lens which is 18-55mm.

    Hello, I'm new to photography I do mostly landscape and long exposure photography and I wanted to buy my first lens. I have a Nikon d3300 with an 18-55 and 55-200 lens
    I was very curious about the sigma 18-250. How is the image quality?
    Also the 35mm, is it good for the type of photography I do?
    I mean for the price it's worth exploring other kinds of photography too. But I was curious.
    Thanks again!!!

    recently i went to see the migratory birds, really annoyed with my 18-55 mm kit lens, what should u prefer should I go for 18-105 mm or sigma 18-200 mm because the price of sigma is just double of 18-105 mm ? Also I am planning to go for trekking to capture the long sighted views ? So which one will you prefer among these two for my hobbies or any other one which you want to recommend ?

    • @elcajondavid1
      @elcajondavid1 Před 6 lety

      Long sighted of views of what? If you're just doing landscapes then the 18-55 is fine. Try to practice with it, or maybe it is defective? Now you going for long distance nature shots, then most definitely get the 70-300 mm. You can find them on Amazon for less or right around $200.00 bucks for knock offs but lack the stabilizer, but that is no big deal because you will want to use or get a monopod which will dramatically cut down the shaking. Make sure you get a good quality monopod, possibly a video monopod that allows you to rotate the camera catching the action of movement or even panoramic shots. Forget tripods, to cumbersome to move, and a waste of time setting up, especially for trekking and quick photo shots.

    • @TheCohibaguy
      @TheCohibaguy Před 10 lety +2

      It's a little soft wide open so you wont really use it at F1.4. Either save some money and buy 50mm 1.8g or get both 50mm 1.8g for portraits and 35mm 1.8g for street.

    • @enishrai4917
      @enishrai4917 Před 7 lety +1

      Go with 35mm cause with 50 mm you need to step back to take full body pictures, although the bokeh is better in 50 mm but the difference is not so vast

    • @EDCGadgets
      @EDCGadgets Před 7 lety

      50mm 1.8G. For fashion you need to compress the background, so it's an advantage that it forces you to step back.
      Also, the 50mm has better bokeh, than the 35mm. The 35 mm cannot be used for close-ups, because it widens the face, which has "cute" or "comic" feeling.
      Normally I recommend the 35mm for general use, but for your type of shots, you need the 50mm for an APS-C camera.

      @Avoyagetruefashion Před 7 lety

      can you tell me what difference does it make in comes to quality of the image and bokeh a 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 or 1.2

    • @EDCGadgets
      @EDCGadgets Před 7 lety

      1.8 and 1.4 not too much. Also you will get sharper result by shooting the 1.8G wide open, compared to the 1.4G.
      If you don't print it, then the 1.4G is good for online publications, but if you need sharp prints, the 1.8G is better bang for the buck.
      You should not bother about the Nikon 1.2 it's a previous generation manual focus lens. Way too much hassle and too many missed shots.

    Sorry this is not to do with a lens question or comment.
    i viewed your video 'How to use the Nikon D5200'.....in the video you adjusted the blurriness, with a lens tip dial. My lens does Not allow me to do that, it will not move.
    i have a diopter button by the viewfinder on my camera....is that same thing you do with the tip of your lens or is it a flaw in my lens?
    Thank you

      Sorry i didn't clarify what i was referring to. The Live View focusing section...when you mentioned turning the lens focus ring to Manual...it doesn't show you switching from A/auto to M/manual switch. When trying to figure out how to get the focus ring on the lens to work i saw the A/M switch on the side of the lens and realized that was how to get it to focus. :) Thank you for replying your videos are very helpful.

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  Před 10 lety

      Bonnie R Yes you are correct, I switched the focus mode on the lens itself from Auto to Manual when trying to set the focus while in live view. Live view uses a different focusing method, and tend to be slower, so manual focus can be used.

    • @davec1004
      @davec1004 Před 8 lety +3

      +Mohamed Amr This is an older video but I would tell you even for the time this is a bad lineup of lenses either than the 35mm. If you want the best bang for your buck for most photography then i would recomend the 35mm 1.8, the nikkor 12-24mm f4, nikkor 18-200mm 3.5-5.6 (the sigma is garbage as is the 18-105mm) the 50mm 1.8, and the 85mm 1.8. These are the best lenses for the money on a dx body. Honorable mention goes to the 70-200mm nikkor 2.8 and the 200-500mm nikkor 5.6. The 70-200 is very expensive but great lens and can be used for alot of different types of shooting. the 200-500mm is a newer lens and if you are into nature photography especially birds then you need the reach. hope this helps you out.

      Are you using live view to focus? If you are, then it's a hit and miss with the focus. If not, then make sure the subject you are focusing has a contrast in color and shade.
