I purchased my first Nikon D5200 in 2014. and a used one in 2017. I use a two-camera setup for shooting my short films. I'm a huge fan of Nikon and have very very VERY few complaints. Shooting video is all bout finding solutions to different problems. The D5200 (and its sisters D5300, D5400, D5500) all allow the technical flexibility to get your shots just the way you saw them in your head.

The Canon equivalent of D5200 is the Rebel T5i. The Nikon has 39 focus points the Canon only has 9. I've got a T5i but also an older Nikon. Extra lenses extra for Canon are cheaper than Nikon but the cameras are very close for everything else apart from focus points. So if you buy a kit second hand then either would do as a beginner set up.

Hey, I have a question - when you switch to the LIVE feed mode that shows you the image on the screen.. I wanted to use that to make a video... When it's set to AUTO on the lens behind the main buttons with two options Auto and Manual.. Whets its set on Auto every 5 seconds there's a sound of something coming from the inside, like its running some sensors or something or moving something inside.. its never heard on the normal mode, without the live preview.. and its gone when you switch that button to manual. so to record a video you need to switch to manual to not hear it every 5 seconds

sultan ansari I'd recommend buying used I shot with the a6300 for a while and it was a FANTASTIC camera for the price, not to expensive if you buy used too, if you want something newer go for the a6400 it has better color science and slightly better AF, keep in mind they are both crop sensor cameras with one card slot if that's an issue for you, you can also often find pretty cheap a7ii's on eBay. If you decide on the crop sensor I recommend sigmas c line of primes the 16, 30 and 56 1.4's, best lenses I've used in a long time. I shoot Fuji now which is also a good option to look into if your interested.

Well, first what are you trying to peruse in photography. If it's business I would pick the 7100, if it's a hobby and you just want quality tourist photos all of them qualify. For business, I recommend the Nikon Z 5 if you can spend $1,000. Let me know if this helps! 😁

@@timothymilton2377 Thank you for responding! Okay, so here is some context. My father was a professional photojournalist and Navy photographer for his entire life. When I was younger I apprenticed under him and actually was fairly technically skilled with my Nikon f3 and using his either Hasselblad or Yashika medium format for weddings. Granted this was in the mid 90's. Then I joined the Marines and my camera got put away seemingly forever. Before my dad passed, he gave me this old D300 to get back into it (5 or 6 years ago). I never did much with it because it seemed daunting trying to relearn on an entirely new format. I regret not getting into it more while he was still alive, but, well, I guess I want to now. My main purpose is that I am a watchmaker, and taking art photos of watches is a passion of mine, and I have certainly reached the limit of what a phone can do. In my possession are 2 very old cameras, the D300 and an old Olympus ep-1. Based on what you're saying, I think the 7100 would be the play and possibly a Olympus pen ep-5 as a backup/road camera. I just think the old D300 is going to teach me on a system that's as antiquated as my old F body.

Brian I have had this camera for years. I have taken shots of the milky way using the 18 to 55 mmeter stock lens that comes with it and a Toshiba sensor does just fine. I have also taken incredible lightning shots. I believe this model came out in 2012, and for the money the performance is still very good. Just remember it's a crop sensor camera so if you don't buy the DX lenses Remember to multiply the focal length here using by 1.5. This means if your using a full frame lens you get a 1.5 times magnification. I would grab it!

@@timothymilton2377 Sorry for being rude. I just hate when going through another entire review video and there isn't even a single photo taken with the camera. It's like watching a car/bike/shoe review with the person not even giving it a ride, but only giving visual commentary.
On the other hand I love reviews with tons of photos in it, where not only you see the reviewer not being lazy and spending time testing the camera, but most importantly the viewer can see what the tool is actually capable of. Different shooting environments (some model work, some landscape, taking it out to the street, an event or two), showing off and taking advantage of some unique helpful features, exploring the menus, durability etc. A solid camera review can take months of putting the gear through their paces.
