We have Finally made it to Cebu City in the Philippines! Cebu Philippines has so much history as it is the oldest city in the Philippines, and because it is the oldest city, it will definitely have the oldest street. So while exploring Cebu, we had to go to Colon Street, which is the oldest street in the Philippines and is named after Christopher Columbus.
What the Philippines has, is also the oldest church, called Basilico santo del nino as well as the oldest fort. Fort San Pedro, a fort built in the 1500's as still stands today.

You could have entered the church as the mass was conducted in the pilgrim area which is located outside the main church. The basilica is a national shrine so it is open to both tourists and pilgrims, thus masses are seldom conducted inside. You could have visited the oldest religious relic (an original statue of infant Jesus that was given to then Cebu's King Humabon by Magellan) in the country encased in a glass at the back of the main altar of the church. It is open for public viewing everyday to both devotees and tourists alike.

Cebu was the oldest settlement and the biggest trading center in the islands before the arrival of Magellan. Cebu was already a prosperous island where traders from China, Middle East, India, Southeast Asia and Japan came to trades goods with locals bringing manufactured goods (like silk, pottery, clothing, textiles, etc.) and traded them with gold, silver, spices, fruits and vegetables, live animals, etc.). Understandably, many local residents of Cebu island became wealthy so it attracted pirates from Mindanao island. Thus the island was subjected to frequent pirate raids that when Spanish conquistadores realized it, they built multiple forts and watch towers all over the island, from east to west, south to north and even in many smaller islands like in Mactan and Bantayan Islands. Some of the remnants or ruins of these watch towers can still be seen in few towns around Cebu.

Hi guys welcome to Cebu. Here are some travel tips for you to enjoy, aside from exploring the South of Cebu for the famous heart pumping extreme adrenaline adventure the Canyoneering, or the Sardine run, Swim with the whale sharks, climbing Osmeña peak, or Waterfall hunting, etc., and North of Cebu for the 170-hectare world class safari the Cebu Safari & Adventure Park, pristine white sand beaches in Bantayan island, Virgin island, Malapascua, diving with Thresher Sharks, Camotes island, etc. And don't miss the Mactan Island where the airport is located; Mactan Island is a hub of world-class resorts, breathtaking diving sites, pristine beaches and islets that are home to Philippines luxury resorts, and unique Filipino dining experiences; and the best island hopping adventure. It is also highly recommended to enjoy the beauty of Cebu City. Enjoy the local food like the famous Cebu de lechon or inasal or litson in local Cebuano language, Sutukil, kinilaw, seafood, siomai, Danggit, Chorizo de Cebu, Dried mangoes, Otap, chicharon, Puso rice and eat it with litson/inasal, barbecue, ginabot, tuslob buwa, etc.. While you're in the City visit the Magellan's Cross, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño Church, the newly built Santo Niño Chapel behind the City Hall, Lapu-lapu shrine in mactan, sm seaside city the 3rd largest mall in the country, the Ocean Park next to sm seaside, and try the new tourist destination in Cebu, it just open last April, the new Iconic landmark of Cebu the CCLEX or the 3rd Bridge, 8.9 km, the longest and the tallest bridge in the Philippines, just pay an extra 90 pesos for the toll fee, if you're driving from the airport and to the airport just take the CCLEX, and if you're already in the city just go to the srp, and the view is just simply astounding and breathtaking especially the ride from Cordova to Cebu City, the skyline of the city is just amazing. Visit also the Ayala terraces & roof top garden in ayala center, Sugbo Mercado in IT park or in Cebu Business Park, the IL Corso Food Yard by the bay and watch the dancing musical fountain. To experience overlooking city view visit Blue Elephant sky lounge, Blu bar & grill in Marco Polo plaza, and Verified lounge. Then check out the mountains side or uphills side of Cebu City and visit the Taoist temple, Temple of Leah, Sirao gardens, Tops Lookout, Top of Cebu restaurant, La Vie in the sky, Chixboy, Mr. A bar & restaurant, and many more. And ofcourse The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 itself is a piece of art and has won prestigious international awards like the 2019 World Architecture Festival was held in Amsterdam. And fly only Cebu Pacific the Cebu's flag carrier, the pride of Cebu, and the largest and the leading airline in the Philippines. Cebu lives up to its moniker as "The Gateway to a Thousand Journeys." There isn't a shortage of explorations to do in Cebu. Cebu offers a unique travel experience as it is a place where the city and paradise meet. Explore and enjoy the beauty of Cebu. The Queen City of the Philippines. Be safe and God bless. ♥️

Culturally two foreign powers had the most impact on the Philippines, the Spanish with some of the foods, architecture, the clothing and especially the last names. There were many families renamed to more Spanish sounding names, my mother included. You can tell the difference: renamed "Villafuerte" not renamed "Cayabangbang." And then the huge impact the Americans had on the Philippines is the prevalence of the English language. Even though there are hundreds of dialects, and Tagalog is the most recognized, followed by Ilocano, the most common language is English. That gives an edge to the Philippines versus other Asian countries especially with tourism!

Because our medium of instruction in school is English and thanks to the gov't for those English subjects that we've learned in school which really enhance us to speak and communicate well both written and orally because in most parts of Asia, learning and studying English are more expensive, and some Asians like Taiwanese,Japanese, Koreans prefer to study in the country aside for cheaper educational fees, Filipinos are more excellent in teaching strategies and too conscious of grammar etc...

Older generations and even new generations in rural parts of Cebu call Cebu by its local name which is Sugbo. Yes, Sugbo is the local name for Cebu and is still currently used by rural people outside Metro Cebu area. Sugbo is local term for 'scorched earth' in reference to pre-Spanish scenario where locals intentionally burned their towns when they knew that a group of pirates were heading to their town to raid. The act of burning their towns to the ground was thought to frustrate the pirates and left empty handed. This pirate infestation in Cebu prompted the Spanish to build watch tower in every town whose relics or remnants still stood today as ruins.

TRIVIA: Fort San Pedro was briefly converted into a mini city zoo by the late mayor but was met with opposition from both civic groups and academe who staged protest rallies everyday until he finally took back his executive order. The city finally built its own zoo in Beverly Hills, next to Cebu's oldest gated community for the rich. The zoo lasted for decades until early 2000 when several groups protested for its improper treatment of animals by its private operators. Today, Cebu hosts to the country's largest zoological, botanical and adventure park, Cebu Safari & Adventure Park, located in Carmen, a town approx. 50 kilometers up north in Cebu.

Kudos to you both for doing a little research for the places you go to! Actually, I love visiting Cebu, having been there 3-4 times already. It's rich in history--beginning of Christianity (in 1521) and Spanish colonization of the Philippines for over 300 years. Now, Cebu City is bustling, its economy is going strong but of course, it has also tremendous traffic just like Manila. Just love the Cebuanos! The culture there is more preserved and the people are friendlier. Still, it has a lot to offer--its beautiful beaches, hotels, resorts and tourist attractions. Enjoy!

You can either pronounce Cebu with a 'see' or with a 'seh' in the beginning, it really doesn't matter, as long as you say it like it's one word. Like at 10:30 Leanne says the first like 'see bu' and the second one like 'seebu'. The second is the more common way, although you'll hear people say it like 'sehbu' too. :)
I love how you guys get in on the history. It's great for foreigners and Filipinos alike that might not know the history behind the Philippines, which I believe was actually colonised even before and longer than Mexico. We'd have 3 basic national languages if they actually kept the Spanish language, instead of just adopt some words.
Anyways, hope the wedding was great and that you guys go back to the Philippines again soon, to live, like permanently, lol.
    Godspeed.

you should try heading to Cebu Business Park, Ayala mall, I.T. Park for a modern Cebu. Try temple of Leah, and Sirao Garden. Cebu has many modern beach hotel resorts as well but if you want to go for the more natural beaches there's a lot but a little far, but worth it. I know you've done some research already but to add to the list, try Osmena Peak - highest peak in Cebu, sardine swimming in Moalboal,. Sumilon sandbar, bantayan island, etc. Take care and have fun.

Yes, the inner courtyard of Fort San Pedro is a popular wedding venue for locals. Seems like there's a wedding event everyday in that place because when we last visited there in 2019, there was also a wedding banquet. When my daughter had their field trip, there was also a wedding.

Basilica del Santo Nino is the oldest church in the entire Phils. It was originally named San Augustine in 1521 and then it was reconstructed in 1565 and renamed Basilica del Santo Nino. Manila/Luzon was discovered by the Spanish in 1571. The San Augustine church in Manila was completed in 1607. ( Magellan 1521 CEBU ) > ( Legaspi 1571 Manila/Luzon ).

For history, you miss the Jesuit and the Yap Sandiego ancestral house near Santo Nino church. There you can see how a Colonial Cebu home used to be. Also the Cebu heritage monument which tell you the history of Cebu from the planting of the cross, baptism of Cebu’s prominent Rajah, his death in Mactan leading to the Spanish Inquisition thereafter. The sites are just a walking distance with each other. Go to Mactan shrine where the battle of Mactan happened. That’s where Magellan died from the hands of our first national hero Lapu Lapu. So many historic sites around the island. If you go to towns, the colonial churches and remnants of small forts and wall ( baluarte) will show you dating back to 1700
