- Square Enix asked me to check out the music from their brand new NieR game, so here's my Music Producer's analysis of why NieR Re[in]carnation's music hits different!
Let's delve in the music lore of this new chapter, and compare it with NieR Automata's to see if there's some connections.

I freaking love Keichi Okabe man. I’ve recently been really into the Drakengard 3 OST, and it’s just as amazing. Fun fact, he also did the OST for an anime called “Yuki Yuna is a hero”.

The NieR games gave me obsession/passion/depression in one go. Not resolved, more suffering as you go. But I love the Drakengard/NieR games so much. NieR Re-Incarnation, damn hit the feels as I expected. The music, I'm back at the concert in London whenever I hear the OST. That day my pain went excruciating and I could barely walk (chronic pain patient, what a life lol) :) But throughout the pain, the music ascended me somewhere else
A lot of Masashi Hamauzu vibes coming through in this song as well. Would love to see some more Masashi love, the guy is absolutely incredible!
I've been playing the game since it came out and have been really enjoying it. The music is amazing as always and I love the character design
I got all the NieR: Automata characters during the first run of the event, both the free 3 stars and the 4 stars from the gatcha. They also plan on doing the NieR: Replicant event again later and you'll get your boi Emil :3
I'm still not over the story of the young prince and his "bodyguard".

Nier Reincarnation and Automata, they are not game with wonderful music. They are modern concerto, 21st century oratorio, and postmodern opera with a beautiful graphics as illustration. Thank you for break down the music for us. I started playing Nier Rein since January this year, and I am loving it.

I encourage everyone to play this game. I usually can't stick with phone games because they seem more concerned about gacha and powerful characters rather than story.
Nier reincarnation is only concerned about telling stories. I have been able to get almost everything and haven't paid a single cent. The game is filled to the brim with beautiful stories, characters, music. And so much lore. They recently added some new ways of getting even more information about the characters in the game.
If you like Nier, I highly recommend playing it, even if you don't like phone games or gacha stuff.
I really tried to like this game but like there's so much boring imo. The stories didn't feel like they had much depth at all to justify playing it just for the story (like they were neat lil stories definitely not bad, but also not anything that blew me away or something), and the gameplay was a lot of just kinda sitting there watching things happen and not interacting. I don't play many games on my phone so maybe I'm biased and it's actually really good for a phone game, but I couldn't get myself to play more than a couple hours before I just totally tapped out. I last played it around a week after it first came out so maybe it's gotten better, but idk

@@connor4wilson That's okay. The stories don't end after you play them. There's more to them when you read character costume descriptions, weapon stories, do the dark memories, the character quests and the new archives.
It is a game that doesn't have much in the way of gameplay, but has a fuck ton of lore and stories, which is right up my alley.
I would've played it already if it was available in my country...
I was never into phone games before, but this was a NieR game and being myself a big fan I had to give it a try. I started playing right when it went global and have been stuck to it ever since. I feel lucky and perhaps a bit spoiled that I started with a gacha like this which is very generous and doesn't try to push microtransactions nor puts players who buy them on a whole different level, something I know most of other gachas and even phone games in general do.
I'm assuming you haven't been playing this game for very long. As someone who has and loves playing this game, a lot of things you're saying here doesn't add up to what the game actually is. It's a character deck builder game. Late game is almost entirely focused on powerful characters and gacha. There are also a lot of major lore sections that are locked behind massive grindwalls. Whether it's character stories or the EX characters which can take you months to unlock. Also Nier Rein. storytelling is awful at times and no amount of good music can cover that up. The last chapter's story arc was unintentionally hilarious at how bad the writing was for it. Sad girl turns herself into a murderous KKK teddy bear. We also had an entire event based around a girl drawing a picture because her parents were arguing.
I will give this game props, it does have a ton of lore. Weapon Stories, Individual Character Stories for each costume, and they did just add Hidden Stories which is are great if you're far enough in the game to unlock them. But if you are a fan of the NIER/ Drakengard universe and lore and think this game is going to provide a deeper look into the lore, you're going to be disappointed. This game's story and all of its characters, other then Noelle, all have major inconsistences with the actual NIER timeline and lore. Right now we have no idea where or how this game actually fits into the timeline.
Nier music is heavenly
Your react videos are beyond just reacting, you take the dull pointless youtube trend and actually give very interesting and useful insight and make it understandable for someone who's not a professional while still keeping it professional. You're simply amazing, keep it up!

Keiichi Okabe and Emi Evans have been one of my most favorite and unique composers for game music and it's always awesome to see you make a video on their music. I hope you come across Chikayo Fukuda because her music is really distinct from all games I've played. Especially in the dotHack series.
I love the addition of J’Nique Nicole in Automata, but Emi’s voice is Nier to me. It just encapsulates everything about the sorrow and struggle for meaning in Nier games.

Honestly, one of my favorite tracks from Reincarnation is the very first song you hear, the one on the title screen. It's so peaceful. It reminds me of the title screen track for Automata a little, as well.

I have had Reincarnation since day one, and while I've fallen behind due to rl things, I adore it when i have the chance to open it up and continue to go through the stories and just jam out to the tracks, Keichi Okabe never ceases to impress me for all the Nier projects, and even in the other projects outside like SinoAlice and Voice of the Cards.

I put off watching this video for so long because I don't think I was caught up in Reincarnation or something, and here I am, after the game has been shut down for a little while listening to the thoughts of music of this wonderful game.
but man are you so right on the overall stuff. I know its not only a Yoko Taro game but also a NeiR game so of course its gonna be sad and hit just right in making you question everything about your exsitance. but you were so spot on with some things too that don't happen for so long. but I think that just shows how good the music of these games are, not only just over all but in the role they play with the story.

9 days left to play NieR Reincarnation before end of service, and many of our questions about how it relates to the NieR series are answered while also posing new questions.
It's been a wild ride and I am going to miss this game and its music. I hope SE doesn't give up on it and publishes an OST for the final arc. Some gorgeous tunes were added at the end.
happy to see you cover such a great soundtrack for a game that I don't see many talk about. it's a good game! my favorite tracks are inori, the vocal track from the Sun & Moon subplot, and toko no kane. Also, I've always liked inori, but your analysis of it revealed its thematic genius!
A bit off topic, but i would like (and ultimately recommend playing it) to hear your thoughts about the Shin Megami Tensei theme's. There are a lot of titles but you can choose: Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (Fierce battle/Fiend Battle/Metatron/Beelzebub/ Reasons Battle )/Strange Journey and the Redux (Any) /IV (Battle B2/ Domain Battle/ Battle 3/ Challenge quest)/ V (basically every single one is good, i can't recommend you just one). Trust me, they are good

Alex, have you ever come across the Chaos Rings series? It was a mobile rpg by SE from 2010. Particularly the first game had a really good soundtrack though it and the two after it aren't playable anymore the ost is worth checking out! I recommend the song Defying Gravity or Ark Arena for a start.

I highly recommend Voice of Cards' soundtrack. It's super pretty. Also by Keiichi Okabe and the MONACA gang.
The 4th track really reminds me of haruka shimotsuki's songs. Which to me, are like the epitome of jrpgs music

I absolutely love the track in this game. I love especially the track that played on the climax on the story, Toki no Kane. That one really, really, REALLY GOOD. Btw track 3 is the gacha track.
I've been playing Reincarnation for months now and it has become a daily game for me (up there with FGO). And yeah all the characters are awesome I got A2 basically months ago and she's still on my team ever since same with Brother Nier from Replicant, and Levania those are my top 3. Haven't play Season 2 story yet but i farm daily.

Keichi Okabe is one of the best composers I know of and love so much his musics and seeing your analysis makes me see there's a lot more to his musics.
I'd like you try hearing soundtracks of another mobile game with Yoko Taro and Keichi Okabe called SinoAlice, it's not nier but gives the same vibe

Pra mim a trilha sonora dos jogos de NIER estão um passo acima de todos os que já ouvi na minha vida, não só pelo fato de serem músicas extremamente bem trabalhadas mas por sempre te surpreender nos momentos em que elas aparecem no jogo, como por exemplo você simplesmente chegar em uma área nova do game ao qual nenhuma cutscene ou algo diferente acontece e uma música extremamente bem orquestrada com um vocal simplesmente maravilhoso começa a tocar na sua tela apresentando um contexto e descrevendo tão bem aquele momento apenas utilizando do artefato musical, isso pra mim foi algo totalmente novo no mundos dos jogos ao qual eu estava acostumado e fez apaixonar pelo mundo de NIER (PT-BR)
For me, the soundtrack of NIER games is a step above all the ones I've heard in my life, not only because they are extremely well-crafted songs, but because they always surprise you when they appear in the game, for example. you just arrive in a new area of the game where no cutscene or something different happens and an extremely well orchestrated song with a simply wonderful vocal starts playing on your screen presenting a context and describing that moment so well just using the musical artifact, that for me it was something totally new in the game world I was used to and it made me fall in love with the world of NIER
Keichi Okabe is a music God. I love how well he's able to sonically capture emotion so well!

Nier remains one of very few games that I bought solely due to its musical compositions and messages about humanism and related ideologies/philosophies.
The music alone deserves the highest praise possible. The Chaos language is by far the greatest accomplishment of this series imo, as despite it being an amalgamation of various different languages, players from around the world speak of it in high praise and find unity in a story of solemnity.
It’s incredible, really, that a single game, and by extension its soundtrack, can invoke so much raw human emotion and interconnectedness alongside that of our own unique strengths, weaknesses and flaws.
I find it funny the happiest track in the game is the gacha BGM where most of the time players would be in despair anyway without the game trying lol

I've been wondering how you became a music producer, like how did you learn to do what you do, how do you know what you know?
I'm asking because I've always loved music (especially video game music) and have always had a good ear for things in the music I listen to, so I'm thinking if I don't become a digital artist, I'd like to be a music producer and/or composer.
