      I think one would have to listen to more than one off the cuff improv to issue that sort of advice. @@ozbluesman-- Danny (R.I.P.) had monster physical chops, but his harmonic vocabulary wasn't anywhere near as vast and varied as Julian's. There's sheer agility of the hands -- and then there's profound mastery of harmony, counterpoint, syncopation, dynamics, and authenticity of expression. Very few of us can bring all that to our playing -- but IMO that's what it takes to be "brilliant" in the way that Julian keeps demonstrating.

    What I dont understand about jazz is that it seems to have so many strict rules and you have to know like so many chord variations but it just sounds like complete randomness to me, like the first minute sounded like completely random notes but its also probably extremely specific. I don’t know if I will ever understand jazz lol but he is definitely extremely talented and one of the best at what he does judging from the comments

    • @povilasl5383
      @povilasl5383 Před 9 měsíci +2

      its not like rules its more like a language. after 2 years im starting to understand something very basic - there are licks and then just ideas which can be basically any interval which can be repeated and sounds good in improv. Licks are usually fast runs/arpeggios, by listening very intently to jazz records you can start to recognize at least this. Other than these 2 things every other improvisation to me is just either playing something out of like "free jazz" which means no rules or its just random things which are idk an expression of an artists emotions. I don't think everything should be thoroughly analyzed and understood, sometimes we can just leave it as "improv in the moment"
