- Buffy Sainte-Marie - Cod'ine
Buffy Sainte-Marie was born February 20, 1941 on the Piapot Cree Indian reserve in the Qu'Appelle valley, Saskatchewan, Canada. She is a singer-songwriter, musician, composer, visual artist, pacifist, educator, social activist, and philanthropist. In 1963, recovering from a throat infection Sainte-Marie became addicted to codeine and recovering from the experience became the basis of her song "Cod'ine", later covered by Donovan, The Charlatans, & the Quicksilver Messenger Service. - Hudba
This makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Beautiful!
Nobody does this song like the woman who wrote it. Buffy forever!
This blows me away. What a voice and performance. Buffy is one of my favorite singers, especially in this one.
Canada's largest star, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, Cree Indian, BY birth, she's, HER message is TIMELESS.....PS I'm STILL in Awe.....
My sweet Buffy...
She did that in one minute and 37 seconds - like your whole life passed in front of you.
crazy good
Like a soulful Indian lament. What a powerful song and singer.
Grandmother of this song with a million admires. Joyous x
Chilling performance. I hope the full version surfaces
Amazing song, so powerfully delivered, what a beautiful soul.
happy 70th birthday Buffy it was honor to meet you in Ottawa you are an inspiration!
they audience is in shock because she's better than bob dylan
+Melissa Brandt Amen, Melissa. She was addicted to codeine for a short time after having had it prescribed for her. However, years later she's in perfect health, gorgeous at 74, stronger than ever., a complete teatotaler. She is a creative source of seemingly limitless talent. I worship the ground she walks on.
I agree completely.
Raw courage. She makes it look easy. I bet it wasn't.
What an amazing video of Buffy in an early performance of this song! Thank you! Just beautiful!
What a fantastic CLASSIC...saw her a few times in the 70s and what class...not to mention that great voice....Yup codiene can be good or bad
extremely powerful. she sometimes sings as if she is on the verge of tears.
beautiful video.
:)/:(
Amen
what a lady. that vibrato.. woman its quite real
oh wow, if you need a good cry and a jolt back to the real
Procurei essa música traduzida em português mas não achei. Também vai ser difícil traduzir da forma que essa cantora canta, ela é um fenômeno!
@pdorn777 This song saved many from the fate of opium, but I lost many friends to it anyway.
powerful
They should hire Buffy for a Vicodin commercial....
Much as I love QMS and the Charlatans' covers, THIS is the version that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. She has been a stunningly powerful voice since long before that was "hip" for women or Native Americans.
As others have said, wish I could find an unedited version here. I assume this was recorded @ Newport?
great track the charlatans do a great cover too.
this is great!
I saw "Festival!" on Neflix and thought this was the best performance.
Love this!
Got this on vinyl!!Great album!!
I wish I was there.
wow... in love
I saw her in 1969. Think it was at Bard College, north of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She had a whole rock band with her and they did everything from Rock to Blues to Folk to Country to Blue Grass to a few places far away. Will be a fan forever. Native American yes. Great Soul absolutely!
@rovamech Im with you on this one. Love the Litter version. Quicksilver Messenger Service is ok. Im not so crazy about Donovans version, thats ok. Though your on the money, Buffy wrote it, and sung it wonderfully, what a voice, what a song... Thanks
one of her best songs
Spine tingling.
About those who drank codeine cough syrup which was easily available, not to mention using paregoric which was more like opium
This is the peak. 1958 Newport.
It was 1964.
lol miles davis played at 58 Newport
chills!
@Taurusaud You can buy her CD with all her best material on it. BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE - Soldier Blue - The Best Of The Vanguard Years (2010)
The audience looks like a bunch of pricks not enjoying Buffy at all. I love you, Buffy!
This video gives me chills
@ZoranJoplin i was doing likewise, heard this for the first time last nite.
This must antecede Bob Dylan's "Ballad of Hollis Brown" as everybody has covered this and nobody's even heard dylan's rewriting of it with no credit to St. Marie.
THAT is one hell of a performance. Mind boggling. Dylan was a compromise.
@beachdog67 Certainly looks like Newport...
the best version is by the Litter then Donovan...but hey she wrote it so...
@ivycompton Actually the definitive version is by Matthew Moore. This is good though.
@theonlyantony Music is objective of course.Yes, I know otherwise. Have you heard Matthew Moore's version? Cheers.
good comment bro
@ZoranJoplin there diggin' to the point of silence, says much more if you ask me... wich you did'nt
@forensmith The original written by Buffy Sainte-Marie was spelled “Cod’ine”.
@skribbleh Have listened to Courtney Love and its quite good in its own way - a heavier sound but more shallow than Buffy, who I think manages to wring the real soul out of it.
Good but the Charlatans so much better
@theonlyantony Heh...Yes to each his own...I did make it though Buffy's tremelo overload version...once. LOL!
Unhhh...actually Newport.
Obviously there exists really good video footage of the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. Does anyone know if it's possible to purchase it anywhere? Where does this clip originate? Thank you so much for posting. She's as fabulous now as she was then.
huh cyndi! to buffy? cindy who?
It's spelled "Codeine".
Janis had nothing on her. You know when you meet your heroes and they often disappoint you? Well she is my hero and I met her and talked for a while and all she did was earn my respect further. "Go go go, my friend."
Because they try to copy the women that did it 1st & have paid their dues. Being Native American Buffy knows about suffering.
its real
My Saskatchewan sister found her healin in Hawaii
Buffy SantaMaria- or Saint Marie? Doesn't matter unless out of principle from a Native perspective
Taurusaud - iTunes... unfortunately. Better yet, purchase the fucking LP at a record store that sells shit.
When and where was this filmed? Is there any other footage from this concert?
1964 Newport Folk Festival- this footage is from the documentary "Festival!"
Holy fucking Moshe
+j Nakhjo She became addicted to codeine after it was prescribed for her. However, that was the only drug she ever did, and she's been off it for many years. She's a complete teetotaler. But yes, she's an astonishing powerhouse of seemingly limitless talent. I worship the ground she walks on.

For the ones on here being nasty, this is about healing and surviving. Unless you lived her life, you have no space to talk nasty here. When you do you only hurt yourselves.
Grammar? When did you decide we all should stop using capital letters at the beginning of sentences? Furthermore, most grammarians (though primarily from a standpoint of style) recommend that one avoid using conjunctions to begin a sentence.
Let people express themselves freely, and save your grammar comments for formal writing; however, I suggest that you first invest in a grammar book before making any more grammar suggestions.
@djboony pardon me for expressing myself, really. and you should improve your grammar, mister.
