    Donovan wrote in his liner notes to his great album, "From A Flower To A Garden":
    "I call upon every youth to stop the use of all Drugs and banish them into the dark and dismal places.
    For they are crippling our blessed growth.
    Must you lay down your Fate
    to the Lord High Alchemy
    In the hands of the Chalk and the Drug
    Magic circles he will spin
    and dirges he will sing
    through the transparency of a
    Queen Ant’s Wing
    Yes, I call upon every youth to stop the use of all Drugs and heed the Quest to seek the Sun."

      I think people should choose their outlet, do away with all vices and then theres just depression and downward. So put your energy into places in the community need the real help and you wouldn't have to worry so much about vices. Look how well prohibition worked. Helped the gangsters line their pockets but the people wasn't goin to be told what they could have. Fix the bigger things first, then you'll see it filter down. Just seems common sense to me. Most people are gonna be a slave to something, media, the man, family or even their own sense of belonging. Very few gets out of the trap.

Any immediate family of mine were alcoholics or amphetamine/uppers users so mine that was with years and years of opiate addiction was never shown to me in such form and fuck man, so when my lil bro or sis & children we're and are old enough to understand after tryin some smoke, I urged them for God sake never pick that habit up it's honestly worse than literally killing yourself and it's more painstakingly worse to watch someone you love more than yourself go through it and can't help at all. • @aluffarb
    @aluffarb Před 10 lety +61

    Saying Donovan copied Dylan is like saying Roger Mcguinn copied Dylan and Tom Petty copies McGuinn copying Dylan. Don't be so critical, these men have a particular sounding voice that has characteristics and vocal timbre similar to Dylan's but are unique to themselves and reflect the singer's style. Besides all three have a far better singing voice than Dylan in quality and ability to stay in key.

      +aluffarb He really did try to copy Dylan, though... Just listen to Donovan's first two albums, the resemblance is uncanny, especially in his harmonica playing. He may be a great musician, but he was always one step behind Dylan.

    • @aluffarb
      @aluffarb Před 8 lety +6

      Imitation is the highest form of flattery. I agree that there are definitely elements of Dylan's musical style and vocals in Donovan's songs and sound, but that's true of many other musicians. Dylan has influenced 3 generations of musicians since he first emerged on the national/international scene 55 years ago. Music in general has always been an exercise in building upon what came before. Even Dylan built upon his predecessors (like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger/The Weavers, et. al.). True innovators and creators of revolutionarily new sounds are an extreme rarity. The true talent is to take a sound and create something new out of it. There is no doubt Donovan has accomplished that and so much more. He has taken basic folk music and worked in British madrigal/minstrel/traditional music, psychedelia, jazz, calypso, and rock/pop and created his own immutable style. Yes, one can detect Dylan in the mix, but Donovan's music is always clearly identifiable as Donovan. He is also by a significant degree, a far more superior guitarist and vocalist (especially in his younger years) than Dylan.

      Donovan's version is too close to Buffy's and misses the emotional level. It feels like he is distant from what he is singing about. Listen to the Charlatans version which increases the emotion and in which the singer seems really concerned. Now, this is just my opinion among other's. Not every song has the chance to be discussed as much as "Codine"...

    when it comes to stealing, copying, transmutating and the basic juke and jive, Dylan was the master of it all - he took from everyone man. He basically channeled Woody Guthie for years copying his every move and vocal inflection which was divine and honorable and look at what all the stealing and copying did for us - gave us finally at the newport festival the ultimate young bobby dylan after having written some of the most profoundly inspired folk songs ever written by one person. So, when anybody is trying to or actually copying bob dylan who the hell knows who that person may become. Afterall, donovan was pr'd and touted as the british version of dylan in the 60's. And he was and look at all the original song writing that came from that. Brilliant song writers. No equals in the genre unless you go back to old OLD Appalachia turn of the century america or black folk songs. Thanks donovan and Dylan, well, what can one say? A gift from the spirit realm. Peace. There can be nobody ever to duplicate what he actually did - so copy away.

    There seems to be a little confusion about the origin and release of this song, First, yes the original was released in 1964 written by Buffy-St Marie. Donovan recorded a DEMO version never released in 1965....in 1970 he finally released a rerecorded version of CODINE using. Another verson was released UK ONLY LP Essense to Essence. It was also released on his Troubadour Box set.Yo ucan say this was a precursor to Neil Young's Needle and The Damage. The sound is that of all the folkies of 1965.

    In my opinion Bob Dylan and Donovan are both great writers but I prefer Donovan's voice over Bob's. I've noticed that many groups have devoted entire albums to covering Bob Dylan's songs,such as the Byrds, the Hollies, Joan Baez, and "Dylan and The Dead" (with Bob Dylan). I guess it's just a matter of opinion, I really do Love them both. Peace and Music, Paisley Tom /PS Bob Dylan has written more songs than Donovan but not as many as Duke Ellington, I am told.

      I have no clue about what you are saying! The Animals and Airplane were on vinyl, what, 2 years after Buffy' first album? So you must mean it was before your awakening to most of the music that was before your time. Or maybe you just don't know what you mean!

    You place it on the turntable, stopped but rotating free, put the needle on the end of the record, then rotate it backwards by hand. It doesn't do the needle a lot of good. Nowadays you get the title "MC" for doing that!. "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Haha" was recorded backwards on the B side.

    I have seen it and I agree that he totally embarrassed himself in that scene. That still doesn't make Dylan a better singer, it just makes him an obvious bully.

      Sounds similar to the chords Dennis Leary used czcams.com/video/2HXQsqTkaOg/video.html, the classic d, c g.

      @@LifeBloodMarketing I think I’m being an idiot, but lemme go try that again lol. Thank you. I’ve been doing add9s and it doesn’t seem low enough, I dropped down half a step and that wasn’t right either. However, I’m pretty sleep deprived so it’s worth another look, thanks again. I love the Denis Leary song 🎵

    This song hit hard when i was withdrawing from adderall addiction. Please let this be a warning: adderall is amphetamines and physically addictive. The withdrawal was the most painful distressing thing I’ve ever experienced (was legally prescribed in school, it ultimately rattled my brain so much I did worse). was the worst thing ever, if you’re a student don’t even touch the stuff I beg you lol

      'Codeen' is the proper pronunciation, I think. I've seen this song title spelled "Co'dine," suggesting it's a street or colloquial pronunciation.
