    I'd like to see a traditional Zelda game structure, but set in an open world. My main problem with BotW/TotK is that everything is too repetitive. So having the dungeons and item progression of a traditional Zelda in addition to the exploration of a new Zelda would be pretty close to perfect imo.

    I think the best case scenario for me personally would be a zelda game with an open world like TOTK, but with a lot of the aspects of the older games, like more than just 4 dungeons (that are actually long and complicated)
    I don't want to see Zelda go backwards and become 100% linear again, but I also would like for them to create a game that has all the best parts of classic zelda, with all the best parts of BOTW/TOTK. I would also like for them to build on TOTK's sage aspect system where you can actually have the characters themselves as companions to adventure with you...I would also love to see them create entirely new lore of zelda again like they did with the zonai in TOTK. I want a zelda game that can be played for hours and hours like TOTK, but with the dungeons, items, etc of the classic older zelda games. For example, I enjoy the fact that I can do any of the TOTK dungeons in any order that I want, but I wish the dungeons were ACTUALLY like the classic zelda dungeons, map, compass, keys, boss key and all. I want it to feel like classic zelda while also still feeling fresh and new. A modern spin on a classic formula.

      One point about the sages. I think they opted for phantoms because they knew that 5 sages running around ALL the time would get annoying in many situations. Of course it's cool to have an actual companion. But phantoms are superior in any other regard. You can turn them off, they are invincible, no need to share food (although on the other hand, you could maybe send them grinding for food and monster parts, which would be cool - but phantoms could be used like this as well if they wanted that)

      8 regions that are more closed of to the other regions with all having a dungeon, items and less filler content like shrines, caves and krugs. I still wonder why they didnt include the clawshot in botw, in botw climbing is a huge thing and even a normal clawshot wouldve been huge and if they dont like the idea of people just rushing to get it and making everything easier, they could lock it behind shrines where you need a certain amount of shrines until you unlock a clawshot module, generally we needed more modules over the course of the game in my opinion

    • @Kaempfdog

      I’ve said it before I’ll say it again. Skyward Sword is the ultimate lore/story/character experience with some of the best showings of the ocarina formula. Botw went all in on exploration and finding your own way to play with Totk continuing that. They have polar opposite weaknesses and strengths. Combine their strengths even if it takes FOREVER to come out, you will probably make the perfect video game. You can look at how other Zelda’s balanced themselves but I’m happy we have examples of reaching for the extremes.

      The only Zelda game that was 100% linear was Skyward Sword. A Link to the Past, Oot, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess pretty much let you explore entire map after the tutorial, with the only limitation being some obstacles that require an item found in a dungeon. A Link Between Worlds even let you beat dungeons in any order. Maybe the next Zelda game can do something similar.

    Something I noticed is a big huge difference between BotW/TotK and the original Legend of Zelda that the open world is supposedly inspired by, is that in the original Legend of Zelda there was some level of progression through the dungeons. There were certain items that were absolutely required to get through certain dungeons, such as the ladder for example, or items like the flute that were required to beat certain bosses or reveal the entrance to certain dungeons.
    You had a large degree of freedom to enter any dungeon you wanted, and there was even a great deal of freedom, to a certain degree, for what order you get the dungeon items. But there was still a progression of sorts to it. Not a fully linear progression, but a pseudo-progression with certain dungeons requiring certain gatekeeper items, and other dungeons having no such obstacles.
    I think a lot of people miss that, and not having that kind of progression is what made BotW/TotK feel repetitive to a lot of people. I think Aonuma should revisit that concept of gatekeeper items, and study it a bit more.

    • @fairfarren38

      @frewtlewps1152 Před 5 měsíci +5

      By not having gatekeeper items, it restricts how much freedom the developers have when creating puzzles for dungeons. Having your base abilities is good for shrines, but not for dungeons.

      Given Aonuma's recent comments on open and freedom-based gameplay, I have a feeling it'll be a long time before any game he makes will have any of that again. Or maybe he's just talking it up for TotK sales. But I do not like any of the post-TotK launch interviews he's given. He basically backhanded the lore that the most dedicated fans love about the series and waved off all of the old core design philosophies as not worth the time of day anymore. Really felt insulting to the series's dedicated fans and the people who designed those old games. Even insulting to himself. I lost a lot of respect for him in that interview a few months back

    • @DiscountDeity
      @DiscountDeity Před 5 měsíci +1

      The original Zelda had some sense of progression, but in the context of its time it was startlingly non-linear. In a time when most games with any sort of depth were fairly linear platformers, the idea of an open overworld, plus numbered “levels” that could be accessed out of the “correct order”, was kind of revolutionary.
      So I don’t think this is really an inconsistency between the original Zelda and the new games, I think this is just the basic design philosophy of the original adapting to keep up with the changes that have happened in game design in general over the last few decades.

      I don't think that leaving this Hyrule behind makes it impossible to continue exploring its loose plot threads. I think it's very possible to start a fresh new Zelda while exploring the mysteries presented in prior titles. My frustration is that Nintendo does not seem to try too hard with that kind of thing. There's your returning enemies and elements, but the continuity of backstory between those elements seem to be an afterthought much of the time.
      I do wonder who invents the backstory and lore of these games. Whoever those people are, I think there should be more of them and more integral to creative progress.

  • @DKCreo

    I think the consensus is definitely that everyone wants the perfect blend between traditional and new, and what we've received so far just isn't that (doesn't mean it's "bad", it just isn't that). . . my personal belief is that in order to even come close to achieving that kind of vision, they have to be willing to re-impose some restrictions on player progression. Right now, I think the games are in a state of being TOO open; there's TOO much freedom, whether that be in how puzzles are constructed and easily cheesed, how poorly the story is delivered / received, etc. You can still create a fantastic open world experience without being so literal to the point that immediately after post-tutorial, you can go and beat the game.

    I kind of like the open world structure, but I also really miss the traditional somewhat linear progression of the story. The dungeons were just too repetitive story wise.
    There are some other mechanics I could go into, but my main number one complaint is the kinda boring repetitive story elements. The plot holes are also really annoying, but for the most part I can get past them.
    Another minor complaint is how grindy the game is. Without a duplication glitch it can take a really ridiculously long time to collect resources.

      @erikn.9180 Před 5 měsíci +2

      i think repetitive is the right word for totk, at the start you get new stuff and have a progression but over time it gets less and less until alot of things just feel repetitive. @@PretendingToBeAHuman Yeah I haven't enjoyed a good open world game in a really long time. They've become cumbersome and a little overwhelming and repetitive. I have more recently been getting into Metroid-Vania games.
      My favorite Zelda game will probably always be Majora's Mask.

  • @Chronoflation
    @Chronoflation Před 5 měsíci +2

    Zelda's only had 2 new worlds since 2010 and the rest has all been remakes and sequels. Newer fans don't realize it, but Zelda used to get an entirely new world every 2 years or so between the handheld and home console games. 90s and 00s repeated maybe 1 world (I never played Spirit Tracks and don't know if it's different from Phantom Hourglass or not). A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, Minish Cap, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass. That's an average of 5 a decade. We could include the multi-player games in 4 Swords and Triforce Heros to increase it to 11 (maybe 12, don't know if 4S and 4SA are the same world or not) and for post 2010. The fact that it's been like this is a stunning drop-off from Zelda history and it's no wonder TotK has become a mixed game. If there were more new game in between and not just remakes and spin-offs, then maybe the people burnt out on TotK wouldn't feel that way as much. It'd be refreshing to return to that world instead of feeling like a retread.
    I'm excited for Zelda to go in a new direction again. I personally hate the BotW structure for these games and will never play a sequel in this style and will likely skip the next game if it does end up being a repeated mechanics, bigger world, new gimmicks version of TotK the way TotK was to BotW. Hopefully it'll get the QoL upgrades that TotK chose to ignore in lieu of going more ham on their physics system and slowing combat down to a cumbersome turn based crawl whenever you need to fuse. Seriously, why can't I just auto cook recipes once I make them once, at the very least, or stock up on fusion arrows so I don't need to re-fuse every single shot

The repetitive breaking weapons, the boring craft system...the shrines...lets make different kingdoms...I could do without the stamina meter but I can even deal with that if the other things are fixed. The new games are ok, but I do hope they get rid of some of the boring stuff. I dont want to have to mod the game to make it better in my opinion. BoTW/ToTK forces you to gather abilities before allowing you to explore the plot-relevant-world.
    The game puts you in a box, confines you to it, until you gather the developer's darlings, which aren't really necessary to defeat the game nor cleanse Hyrule.

    My idea for the new game is a pre-game starter where Link can go around the open world where there are no monsters. There will be some areas that Link won't be able to go to or won't be available for him until the main story starts where the villain, which I want to see someone new is trying to resurrect an old villain, weather it be the traditional Ganondorf or someone like Vaati. With that said, before the main story starts there can be side quests for Link to do. When the main story starts other side quests can come into play. There will be dungeons with traditional weapons used for the dungeons and there will be items to get to move heavy objects or climb walls. No more stamina. I am not sure how I want extra hearts to fit in, weather it will be a puzzle, shrines, or both. I don't think that shrines should come up since we had them twice but something similar to that. I want more villains that are puzzled based like the main villains of TotK where instead of just hack and slash, you have to do something like break their ice around them which was cool when they brought back traditional villains for the four regions. I want to see more of what we saw in the beginning of the Lightning Temple with the traditional aspects of a dungeon. I want Dungeon Keys and Big Keys back. My line of thinking at the moment is that I'd kinda like to see them try an approach where it'd be handled like multiple games worth of story in the same world. I mean, take the idea of the "regional phenomena" quest in TotK but massively expand on it. Suppose that in the scope of the connective central storyline Ganon's forces are organized under the banners of several generals. (Could bring back old characters like Onox, Veran, Vaati, King Bulblin, etc. Or they could invent some new ones. Either way, these would be relatively smart villains with their own methods and motivations instead of just some random monsters. Each would have their own reason for playing along with Ganon's orders.) So one regional story is about Vaati leading an army of Wizzrobes and Vire in a war against the Rito, maybe. And another regional story is about Onox leading an army of Armos and Darknuts in a war against the Goron, perhaps. Whoever the villains are and whatever type of enemies make up the primary forces of each villain's individual army (there can be other types mixed in but it'd be super important for making each part of the world feel distinct that it's not just Bokoblins making up the overwhelming majority of all the enemies everywhere like both BotW and TotK did), each regional story would go linearly through many separate local enemy strongholds (at least a few of which could be comparable to classic dungeons and several more could be mini-dungeons) occasionally clashing with the general along the way until reaching a final showdown (like with TP's King Bulblin). The player could have freedom in the open world to jump back and forth between different stories as they please. Or the player could binge each separate story all the way through before moving onto the next one.
    The connective central storyline weaving in between those individual stories could be nonlinear like BotW and TotK. Maybe it guides the player to visit an area in each region that's relevant to the local story but not actually visited as part of the local story. Weakening Ganon directly in some way with those efforts. (Maybe these are altars set up by Twinrova to siphon some sort of energy from the chaos caused by the generals similar to what the Twinrova in the Oracles games did for a Ganon resurrection ritual?) The regional stories that you complete (or don't complete) affect what type of support Ganon receives from his generals and their forces, but the objectives more directly connected to the central storyline could have an effect on the abilities of Ganon himself.
    We'll probably get nothing like that, but that's where I think they need to take it.

      @@pronounhoarder_8632 How is that franchise in terms of just jumping into it at any game at random? Same ability to stand alone as Final Fantasy games? Or are they more connected than that? I played the original when it was called Dragon Warrior on NES when I was a kid, and then the first time I heard that it had ever gotten any sequels they were already at something like Dragon Quest 6 or 7 or so. Whichever one would've had a Gamecube release. I've never picked up any of the sequels.
      I suppose there are a number of games that the idea could be compared to in some way, though. Wasn't at least one of the Star Ocean games built around hopping between different main characters who were involved in different sides of a bigger story? (I think the one from that series that I played was the one released on... PS1?) And more recently there are the Octopath Traveler games with a similar type of concept. I wasn't thinking the separate characters angle with what I wrote, but that could be the next step for Zelda games after all this buildup they've been going through with the transformation masks in MM, the freedom fighters in TP, the Knight Academy students in SS, the Champions in BotW, and the Sages in TotK.

    Why can't the starting plateau/island shrines be extended and more like the classic dungeons. That allows the old classic find the macguffing half way through then use the macguffin to finish the mini dungeon. Once you get all the abilities open up the world and have another few classic dungeons with optional macguffins that you dont need to finish the game but are useful. I'd find additional special items that are optional that may operate like the master sword does significantly more useful than the sages following me about and would mean classic dungeons in the new formula. It wouldnt be far off young and old link from OOT or light and dark world in a link to the past.

While other games have had decent stories or attempted to explain the events and cyclic rebirths and amnesias... they've never had a hard set storyboarding technique to attach you to the characters to the degree other games do. I think it would benefit from deeper level storytelling. people this day and age are lore lovers. make it happen kind of thing yk

    I basically assumed they would change it up next time, but given N's history of building off of the previous project, I imagine some things will be used to inspire whatever's next.
    As long as they don't make it cyberpunk, I trust the team to continue doing great things with this franchise. Though, to be fair, I never expected to drive a monster truck or fly biplanes through Hyrule, and couldn't imagine it working, yet here it is.
    Tears is the game that finally made me put LttP as second, and I still haven't finished it. I only got my Switch last Christmas and ran through BotW in less than five months to start this one.
    So on the point of BotW having more impact, it also had five years of history, TotK is only just over 6 months old and I'd bet the amount of content created for it already rivals that of BotW, right?
    As far as a fresh take on the series, and bringing in new fans that is true. But from a gameplay perspective, TotK gave so much freedom even above the previous, it's almost in another genre.
    Also, I'm curious what direction they will take next considering these two games have gone to such great lengths to rope in plotlines, characters, places, and items from previous titles. I think they either revisit a previous story (Adventure of Link pleeeeeeeeze) or go in a totally unexpected direction like Twilight Princess did.

    I think spirit orbs are much better than heart pieces. The only reason to want heart pieces again is for nostalgia. They could fix the repetitiveness of getting them by allowing them to be found outside of shrines from sidequests and mini-games.
    I saw a video where a youtuber said he wants the next Zelda to have heart pieces, a musical instrument, a companion (Navi, Red Lion, Midna, Fi), item-gatekeeping, Hookshot, no expendable weapons, and linear gameplay for the sake of story. While we have had enough of the BotW formula, I don't think we should return to the exact same thing we had prior.
    I personally would like a change to the breakble weapons formula where the weapons are like the armor and can't be broken but can be upgraded permanently with parts as you progress.
    If Nintendo does not want to revisit the OoT formula again for 3D titles they could maybe make new 2D games that use that formula to help satisfy those of us that want to play linear Zelda in addition to open world.

    I will be sad to see the world and style of botw go (and sad that we won’t get a red game to complete the triforce, guess I’ll just have to count HWAoC), but I really wouldn’t mind a game that is a bit more structured and linear. The thing with letting players tackle dungeons and shrines in whatever order they want means you can’t establish any sort of puzzle progression, where a puzzle you encounter later is a more complex and difficult version of a puzzle you solved earlier and since you solved that earlier puzzle you can understand how to solve this more complicated version. And I freaking love that kind of thing. Totk had it a liiiitle bit with the shrines near the Rito and Zora dungeons introducing the unique mechanics of reaching those dungeons (though the Zora one does it way better, I didn’t really need a tutorial shrine to understand trampolines but thanks, Zelda Team). But overall they can really only do this within a single shrine and with most of the shrines being so short the opportunities are pretty limited. Botw actually did the intra-shrine puzzle progression a bit better, totk just has too many shrines for most of them to be longer than a single puzzle. Also, since we’re definitely not using motion controls anymore, can we go back to left-handed Link?

    I feel like I want the exact same thing everyone else is saying.
    We need a Zelda game not with a billion shrines but dungeons and mini dungeons.
    Have the world be open but then you get to complete any temples/dungeons in almost any order would be cool. Also you can head to the boss at the start if you like but it cannot be a go to these 4 places and switch these 5 switches then fight a boss.
    (Also I’d love a truly realistic Zelda game but I know that will never happen)

    I honestly couldn't agree more! I would also like a remake of both wind waker and ocarina of time. But i would love all the things you've mentioned for the next new Zelda game. I just really hope they don't do any of the stupid controls from skyward sword or any funky gimmicks like that..

    I didn’t vibe with totk at all and I loved botw. It just felt like a been there done that retread after botw and I’m ready to go back to a traditional Zelda again. I hated the Minecraft aspect, the dungeons just weren’t what we wanted and the sky islands were meh and the underground was awful. The gameplay loop bored me to death. My most anticipated game of the year too

    I love the idea of an old link still being around next time that ganon shows up (not having died and reincarnated) and having to go at it again. The only problem with that is, it's also technically gotta be a direct sequel to another game. And I'm pretty sure that kids would hate playing as an old man, and that it'd turn the reincarnation cycle on its head and cause huge issues, and a huge part of the community would absolutely hate it

    I miss the style of Windwaker and Twilight Princess. I just want to play a simple kids game...but now I need a freaking PhD to play these games...and why does a controller have 400,000 buttons? I just want to run, swing my sword and shoot my bow & arrow.

    I agree with your wishes on the next Zelda, realism would be nice. Also, the absurdity of consumable weapons, shields, bows, etc. has got to go. There is a romance to weaponry and the fact that a sword, the Master Sword especially, can’t even survive one fight is just ridiculous and ruins that romance. It very nearly ruins BOTW and TOTK for me.

    I think we're long overdue for another Top down Zelda game. I love the 3D games and especially the open world games, but there's always been a special place in my heart for Top Down Zelda and I really miss it. The last big Top Down game was ALBW since Link's Awakening is a remake.

    What Nintendo should really do is A Totk Sequel to where Link And Zelda Discover Time Travel 100 years ago to change the events before the kingdom was devastated like they battle Ganondorf deep below Hyrule Castle before he started to destroy everything not making this based on AOC cause it's a different timeline

  • @peteypiranalover

    Personally, i am fine if stay in one version of Hyrule forever or switch it up. Either way you add to the world building mythos of the characters and setting which is the reason i am here for this series. As long as still matches the lore well enough. There are minor plot issues of how the different zelda's connect but they connect well enough on the timeline. The vague year count does a lot of heavy lifting. My personal theory is after a long enough time the Hylians, and other races literally mass migrate inbetween games and are very unoriginal. Every desert gets named Gerudo Desert, big volcano=death mountain, big Lake=Lake Hylia, etc. Names of the past survive but thier context and location gets shuffled

    Zelda 3D Fighting game in the vain of Soul Calibur with multiple characters and costumes spanning the entire franchise. Just imagine playing Skull kid vs Midna, Urbosa vs Pig Gannon, Toon Link vs Zant, Ravalie vs Groose, Skyward Sword Princess Zelda vs Mipha etc

    Ya know…and maybe because Wind Waker is my favorite and I absolutely adore how TOTK looks (and by extension BOTW) I’m not…really pressed to have a realistic looking Zelda. Something about going for realism usually ends up being counterproductive about 10 or 15 years down the line when it ends up being outdated by newer hardware. Now. I will admit Twilight Princess’ visuals have stood the test, but…then you have some character models that end up looking silly as hell. Which, I don’t mind but it doesn’t exactly convey realism. I’d prefer my Zelda games stylized. A very unique look. It doesn’t need…bright & colorful visuals per se, but I want it to look unique. Something timeless. I don’t need Zelda to look like Elden Ring for it to be mature and complex to me.

  • @cmt5140

    They should do Zelda similar to Xenoblade as far as the world goes where it is linear but you have large sprawling explorable areas so it doesn’t feel really linear. In a sense OoT is kind of like that but on a much smaller scale

    I loved tears of the kingdom so far its awesome. Now for the next up coming games for legend of Zelda let's bring some past games to the switch. I want to see wind waker and twilight princess both hd on the switch we waited a long time for these games to come out so hopefully we get wind waker and twilight princess on the switch pretty soon it will be much harder to get the wiiu and the games so fingers crossed for these games to come out on the switch. Now as for ocarina of time and majorias mask they also need to be on the switch too along with the hd touch that will be really cool the only thing I would change for ocarina of time to mark the maps to mark the locations of the golden skullchlas that's goes for twilight princess to mark the locations for the poes and they will stay marked when link becomes an adult and as a kid for the poes just to back track after you can transform into a wolf of your free will I got that idea from breath of the wild and tears of kingdom to mark the locations of the shrines it helped me alot so with that ability to mark the maps of ocarina of time and twilight princess that will be helpful. Also it won't not hurt to bring minish cap and the oracle games to give them the hd touch too along with phantom hourglass and spirit tracks too.
